Oh. My. God.
When we were told the new entry in Saints Row would be wilder than Saints Row 3, I struggled to imagine how...
Well now we know.

Saints Row IV has been annouced for a 20th August release in North America, and 23rd August for a worldwide release.

The game was announced just yesterday, and with it came a teaser trailer, displaying that....well.....It really is wilder. And I mean wilder.

The protagonist of the Saints series has been elected as president of the United States after saving Steelport in Saints Row:The Third, and what could possibly threaten the Saints now they are more-or-less the government?
Not a gang, oh no.

Aliens.

Some Alien overlord has decided it is about time the Saints ended, and thus he has warped them all into a virtual imagining of Steelport(Still not Stilwater.....) that is a little more Dystopian than I remembered.

Thats not all, from what I personally can tell based on promotional images, some of the gang returns, some seem absent, and there are one or two new faces.
I believe that I can safely say that at least Kinzie and Pierce are back, I also think I can say Shaundi is present but I can't tell if it is her or Viola, or maybe even a new Saint.

As for absences? I can easily say that Oleg is not there, nor is Zimos, and it seems like even Johnny Gat's clone is not around, let alone the original who I think it is fair to say is long dead since the beginning of the third game. Angel is also missing.

And we have two newcomers, a man with long black hair wearing a leather jacket, and a new woman who looks to me to be Asian. I have a sneaking suspicion that the new guy is Matt Miller, the leader of The Deckers from Saints Row 3.

So, right now it's not really that crazy, right? The DLC for Saints Row 3 was wilder than this?

Wrong, we are going to the Matrix.

You don't need to be waving around puny pistols, now You can leap over buildings, outrun sports cars and have super-strength.
Even stranger? It looks like we can glide.

And we aren't just jacking up on powers, oh no, now we have new alien weapons, forget about STAG's laser rifles and sonic rays from Saints Row 3, now we have rocket-launching guitars, what seems to be telekenetic tether guns, and a new weapon that fires a beam that will hit an enemy in the genitals and apparently make their head explode.
It's a wonderful world when You are the president, kids.

We also get to suit up in some new Matrix-inspired outfits, put on them shades, Neyo.

Here's an article incase I missed something:

The gun that won that old Wild West

Just watched the trailer aaaanndd.... Disappointed. I know this sounds strange, but Saints Row 2 and 3 were two of my top 10 favorite games of all time. Saints Row "4" isn't worth of the "4" in my opinion. A seperate game would of been fine, like the GTA series did with Vice City and San Andreas, but wait a few years for an actual numbered sequel with a new engine, etc. etc.

This game has been in development for a while, it is quite deserving of the 4 in its title.
Saints Row stopped being Saints Row in the first game, that can't be an excuse, I personally would have loved if the series had followed the idea of an actual good gang, and the realism stayed like Saints Row 2, but I still love where the series has gone, it is unique, it's not just another GTA clone now.

I rewatched the trailer and my opinion has changed. I spotted a few really cool features in there (that low rider with huge wheels, hoping for some serious cool customization) was kinda thrown back a bit at first because of how much it looked like SR3.

But you're right about how the series isn't just a gta clone anymore. It's really taking off in it's on direction. Becoming less and less about the realism and crime GTA-esque theme and more just... pure open world insanity, and that's a good thing. SR2 was a good mix but still more on the "serious" side. I really miss Johnny Gat...

I know, Gat did come back in the SR3 DLC, but unless he grew his hair out and his body went back to normal I don't think Gat (Or Tag, as his clone is named) will be back.

I hope we get a level of customization at least equal to Saints Row 2, I spent a dangerously huge amount of time just messing around with all my clothing options and choosing if I wanted to wear that hat backwards or that jacket open or if I wanted that car to have Hydrolics instead of turbo.

I think the real charm and fun of this game is going to come through when multiplayer starts going on though, when You have a game this wild and destructive, now with the added super powers, even just two players in the world is going to be absolute madness.

Just watched the trailer, looks cool. I didn't play much of SR2, but I finished SR3 and I really liked it. What I like about SR is that even after a while, it doesn't get as boring as GTA (IMO)
I never liked playing story missions in GTA, but in SR I actually did. So, since 3 was that good, I'm sure this one will be good aswell.

I don't mind it being unrealistic, as long as it seriously isn't too much lol

The super powers seem kinda cool, but how would that work? Is it gonna be like a GTA/DC Universe Online game...? I can't imagine you have those powers the whole time...

It would appear that once You get the powers they are Yours to keep.
As longas You are in the virtual world, that is, I doubt they are usable in the real world of Saints Row.
