Computers do a whole lot more in the background than games consoles do so they need more RAM for that, consoles don't So for a console 8 gig is huge. I think that's dedicated to games too, not sure though. PS3 can barely handle 1000 moving objects on screen, PS4 can handle a million with no lag so there's a lot of gaming potential for low price here. I'll be really surprised if Microsoft have a better console at the ready. They'll likely update theirs now that they know what the PS4's specifications are. |

I don't want any company to rush their product out just because of a rival. I'd rather have a nice, polished, efficient machine than something hastily put together and full of bugs. Plus they shouldn't make the mistake Nintendo made by releasing a console before any decent games were available for it. |

Yeah Sony done that with the Vita too... However I think the Vita's long term application was to be used with the PS4 so it'll likely gain use and popularity when PS4 comes out. Nintendo have really declined in the past decade or so, I remember getting a Gamecube was the highlight of my life up until that point and since then it's just been...meh really. I don't really consider the Wii-U to be...8th? Gen it can have it's own, Sony and Microsoft are owning this industry for the next few years at least. |

Until Sony and Xbox actually release a new console, the Wii-u will remain more powerful than both of them. |

I agree that 8 gigs of RAM is pretty amazing for a console. 8 gigs of memory for a PC is about average, but it's enough to run anything you want easily. Unless you're running a server of course. Also I doubt the PS4 will be 300 dollars, I'd look more into the 600 dollar range. PS3 release was 600 dollars, I can't see the PS4 being any less than 500. |

My gaming set up always included a Playstation of some Kind so the PS4 will be sitting right next to my gaming pc on the desk of glory whilst my, xbox steadily retains dust because of lack of use due to having to pay to play online... Edit: oh yeah and Muffin you pretty much hit the nail on the head, the PS4 is 80% or more just a PC under the hood... Which is good don't get me wrong, won't have to worry games be less Visually appealing for at least 2-3 years but I think the PS4 will be the best of the 3(Out of the consoles) this year around. Can't wait till release

Eight gigs of RAM for a console is amazing, especially since I haven't even heard of a game yet that runs over four. |

IT's not about how cheap it is. The thing is 8 gigs of RAM will run an game fine, on PC or console. I have 8 gigs of Memory in my PC and I can run every game on Ultra. It's about the speed of the RAM, not how many gigs it is. |

CPU speed is important too. I have 6Gb of RAM but only have a 2.3Ghz Quad Core. Since most games don't yet utilise quad cores, that means I'm only using two of them at most for a game. So 4.6Ghz would be the theoretical max output from my CPU when running a game. Of course it's not even going to be that. Processing needs to be used in other areas of my PC as well as the game I'm playing. However, since I have four cores, more energy can be put into the game I'm playing whilst my computer also manages other tasks. Point is, it doesn't seem very practical to have more than 4 cores in a machine right now. Especially in a console. Since it's primarily for gaming, do they really need 8 cores and how much are these 8 cores going to actually do? |

8gb will be split between GPU and CPU. This is a weak weak console. http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-1333MHz-KHX1333C9D3B1K2-8G/dp/B004DDI0IE/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1361986297&sr=1-5&keywords=ddr3+8g+ram 8gbs runs for about 50 bucks, and anyone who dares tell me Sony will be running this ***** off new top-of-the-line ram kits is wrong. This is already dated technology considering they've been in R&D for years. As for the cores, they very recently have been able to start working with quad-core and greater in terms of designing games for it. Consoles have yet to experiment with them. Actually this is dedicated, the whole point of a dedicated card is that it has its own memory. So the GPU as stated in the Sony Release has its own GDDR5 memory. Then the rest of the memory the 8gigs ( probably DDR3 ) will be used for the rest of the system. All dedicated cards have their own memory, that's the point.
@ muffin It's not only the gigs that matter either. Intel i3 cpu's can have up to 3.0Ghz not overclocked. I can guarantee an i5 2.4 is way faster than the i3. Every is obsseded with how much it has, it's not about the numbers, it's about the speed. 2.3Ghz means it can process 2.3Ghz total, it doesn't mean how fast it can processes it. Also, yeah most games don't uses a lot of cores, the point of cores is multitasking. To be able to run programs in the background. I know the new Xbox is rumored to be able to run 2 games at the same time, this is definitely possible with 8 cores, and probably even 4 cores. So yeah, it's probably an over kill, but as explained above, big numbers means every gets hyped up. Edited by SSJ2 Goku, Feb 27 2013, 05:55 PM.

They both will share the GDDR5. It's shared memory. Also, with Sony I'm hesitant to take their word after Cell Processor shenanigans Edited by Fulgore, Feb 27 2013, 06:00 PM.

No it's not.... Look GDDR5, the G stands for graphics. They don't even make cards with 8 gigs of GDDR5, or 4 in that matter, maybe top of the line 500 dollars cards have 4 gigs of GDDR5. You need to look up your facts, becasue you're wrong. Dedicated card means the Graphics card has its OWN memory. That's how dedicated cards work, it's the same with the PC. My GPU has 2 gigs of GDDR5, it's a 300 dollar card. So you try an tell me that a 500 dollar console is going to have over a 300 dollar graphics card. It doesn't make sense. The 8 gigs of memory the mentioned has nothing to do with the graphics card. Google search GDDR and see what ti says, it's graphics only. Proof: http://www.ehow.com/about_5036027_gddr-sdram.html "Despite its naming, GDDR3 SDRAM is not in any way based off the DDR3 SDRAM specification. " That's just the first link I clicked, all of them will tell you the saem thing. |
