Introducing the new Chevrolet SS.

For those who like to drive fast but still haul people, Chevrolet is reviving the big rear-wheel-drive muscle car sedan.

General Motors unveiled the Chevy SS at the Daytona International Speedway last weekend. It’s Chevy’s first rear-drive high-performance sedan in 17 years.

The Australian-built car is a new version of the Pontiac G8, a much-revered sporty car that died when GM scrapped the Pontiac brand late in 2010. The G8 lives on, though, in the Caprice police patrol vehicle. The SS also is sold in Australia as the Holden Commodore.

Chevrolet reached back to its muscle car history to get the SS name. The SS stood for “Super Sport” and was the badge given to high-performance versions of mainstream cars dating to 1961. Chevy sold SS versions of the midsize Chevelle, the Impala full-size car and the Camaro sports car, among others. There even was an SS version of the lowly Chevrolet Cobalt compact in the past decade.

Chevrolet’s last rear-drive high-performance sedan was the 1996 Impala SS, a muscle-car version of the mainstream Caprice.

Here are some details about the new SS:

• INSIDE: All the SS models come loaded and seat five. Leather seats with added side bolstering for spirited cornering. Nine-speaker sound system. Push-button start. Touch screen. Automatic parallel parking-assist sensors. Lane departure warning, blind-spot detector and backup camera, plus front collision alert.

• OUTSIDE: Looks a little like the old G8, but slightly more sculpted with some LED daytime running lights. Wide, athletic stance with wheels pushed out. Slight “power bulge” in the aluminum hood. Big brakes and 19-inch forged aluminum wheels.

• UNDER THE HOOD: Same 6.2-liter V-8 engine now used in the 2013 Corvette, with 415 horsepower. The SS can go from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds.

• GAS MILEAGE: Not tested yet. Corvette with similar motor gets up to 26 mpg on highway.

• PRICE: To be revealed closer to date it goes on sale, sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.

• CHEERS: Brings tight handling and neck-snapping acceleration to people who need space to carry people and things.

• JEERS: Probably won’t get great gas mileage, especially in the city. But if you buy it, do you really care?

Ahhh I really like this post!

My favorite Chevrolet of all time was the Monte Carlo. It is a shame they discontinued it.

As for this car, I think it is pretty good looking. It seems Chevrolet is starting to catch up to the competition with their designs. I am not a big fan of muscle cars though so I wouldn't buy one because it doesn't seem practical with the gas mileage.

Is there a price tag on it as well?

The Aus version is expected to be about $60,000 for the SS. And the US version is going to be $10,000 less than that. So maybe between $45,000 and $50,000.

:errm: Would you pay that much for a Chevrolet? I don't think I would. It may be overpriced, but that is my opinion haha.

It does come packed full of technology though. So I suppose it would have to priced so high.

We get cheaper versions over here which are V6's instead of 8's. Cost about $35,000.

I wouldn't pay that much. It may be able to make my car look a ***** on the track, but I wouldn't pay that much for anything but a Corvette or a super exotic sports car like a Ferrari. The SS is a nice car, but even $45,000 is too much IMO.

The price is only a guess at this point. But going off what they said about it being $10,000 less than the Aus version. I think it's a close guess.

Rumours are the Holden VF Ute could be going to the states as an El Camino.

I don't see someone dishing out 45 grand for a Chevrolet. If you are going to spend that much cash, you will spend it on a car like a lower end mercedes or bmw.

Don't get me wrong. The car is beautiful. It does have sophisticated technology as I can see in the photos. It looks fantastic on the inside too, but who are they marketing this car for? Who are they competing with as far as this segment is concerned?

A four dour sports car. I see Subaru, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Dodge as up front competitors.

Three of the four companies are of Asian origin meaning they are more reliable, plenty of after market items, and appeal to young generations as far as styling is concerned.

Would you pick this car over an Evo or a Maxima?

I would choose the Holden over those cars because I'm a mad Holden fan and like to buy Aussie made. Although if I was offered a choice between the VF and a new Camaro, it would be a hard choice.

They want the car to compete with the likes of the Dodge Charger R/T, Chrysler 300, Hyundai Genesis and Cadillac CTS.

With the newest Corvette engine in it. And technology like -

Self parking technology
Forward collision warning
Lane departure warning
Blind spot alert
Heads up display
Keyless entry and start
Electric parking brake and electric power steering

I think the price is fine.

i agree with cooler for all that's its giving the price is fine

but i see what pooke is saying as well, more people would rather opt out for a better looking car , that's better known, though it has less impressive tech in it

i mean common Mercedes or Chevrolet , obvi choice

but i must say that orange , is tooo nice
