Recently, I've been playing FotNS Ken's Rage 2, and after getting quite a fair bit through it, I decided to make my analysis on it. Firstly, there's the story mode. Compared to it's predecessor, the story mode in this game is incomparably better, with the cutscenes and events portraying the original manga for more effectively and including all of the main events of the manga (other than those involving Ryu, but they weren't important anyway.) Next, there's Dream Mode, in which you play through a character's story from prior to the events of their introduction in the manga, or parts which fill in voids of their history. I like the flow of it far more than the first game, with bases being easier to take and missions being far easier to achieve the highest rank on. However, it's sad that as it dosen't follow what if scenarios like with the first game, it dosen't live up fully to it's name (although many of the events such as Souther beating Kaioh, or Falco journeying to Shura prior to the Land of Shura Arc are heavily non-canon, so that sort of balances things out). As for the actual gameplay, there were quite a few pros and cons compared to the predecessor. Pros -Finishing off bosses is far easier, as you just need to press B/Square when their health is gone and press it again when the opportunity arises, rather than going into that multiple button pressing string like with the first game. -Larger and more unique character roster. -The generic fodder enemies are now fully one-shot material, making it feel far more closer to the true Hokuto no Ken experience. -As the Meridian charts have been removed, the mastery skill is no longer there meaning you don't have to level your characters up to improve their combos. You can use all their combo moves right off the bat. -Signature moves are far easier to unlock. -Better story mode and cutscenes. -Dodging allows you to get out of many attacks, making things seem more sensible than the first game (as someone like Kenshiro not being able to avoid some random thug's attack is lol-worthy). Cons -Some Signature moves such as Raoh's Equine Fury have been removed. -The dodging replaced the jump, which was a good way of breaking the guards of boss characters (although I do prefer to dodge over jump). -Like the previous game, the ending theme for the international version is replaced with BGM from the game. -No dub. Although I overall prefer the original japanese version, the dub of the previous game did an excellent job with Jagi and Souther's voices. I'd even go as far as to say that the voice actors for those two did an even better job at portraying the characters than their Japanese seiyuus. -There's too much of a divide between how good each character is and the tiers between them. For instance Raoh, Toki, Kenshiro and Kaioh are definately top tier, whilst Shu, Lin and Heart are absolutely terrible to use. -Ai wo Torimodose is no longer part of the soundtrack. I mean seriously, WTF?! You can't bring forth the true HnK experience without it! Overall, I'd say that the flaws aren't that great, and it does a far better job at allowing you to experience the franchise than the previous game did. Even taking into account the flaws, I'd give it a 9.5/10. Edited by Captain Cadaver, Feb 20 2013, 01:09 AM.

Nice review :D I've only played the demo to the first one...I wanted to get it, but never saw it in stores. Would you say the game is more something for people that played the previous one or know the anime/manga, because I never got to watch or read it (it never aired here)... |

Well, I'd say that fans of the manga/anime such as myself will appreciate and enjoy the game more. Those who have played the predecessor will likely be able to find the game far easier than an average gamer, as there are only a few changes in gameplay. However, those who haven't read the manga or watched the anime will still be able to enjoy it due to how well the manga-based custscenes in Legend Mode and Dream Mode tell the story. Also, as an extra part for the best characters, I've found that Kaioh (with high level aura and attacks stats)>>>All. His Anryu Tenha technique is just too overpowered. A perfect way to get the achievements for A Ranking each Dream Mode mission and killing 100,000 enemies. |

Yeah, fans sure will like it even more, but I think I'd still like it...I always thought it looks interesting. Does this one tell the story from the beginning of the manga/anime? Thanks for the hint :P |

Yes. It contains all the events of the manga other than those involving Ryu, which lacked any significance to the plot other than further bloating Raoh's legacy, and ruining it at the same time. It also fully follows the manga, paying no need to the anime and it's changes (eg. Has the events with Golan and Devil Rebirth after Shin's defeat rather than before it which the anime changed it to. Includes Shiino and Jask rather than their anime substitutes Boltz and Tiger, plus the anime never adapted the Bolge Arc.) |
