Surely rugby vs American football would be a better rival since they have much more in common than just a name.
You'd think so, but in reality people argue about soccer and American football way more because fans of both want to be able to completely claim the name "football" for their preferred sport, and a lot of American football fans make fun of soccer for being a girly sport (in the US it has been more of a girl's sport for a long time, although that seems to be changing).

Top 3 in the sports I watch, I'd have to say

#1 Ohio State vs Michigan
Always a good game, anyone that watched the basketball game a couple weeks ago should know.

#2 Ravens vs Steelers
Games are always great to watch, both teams have a solid defensive, players get really hyped up. You see some of their best foot ball in these games.

#3 Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal
Tennis is my favorite sport to play, so I had to these two. Easily top 10 best tennis players ever. Some of the best tennis matches ever have been seen while these two played together. Both being from the same country makes it even better.

Peyton Manning vs Tom Brady; I haven't seen two opponents compete one another and with so many great games attached to both. It's no wonder all of they games they faced ended up as classics.

They aren't from the same country, Federer is Swiss and Nadal is Spanish. I agree though, that this rivalry was great. Federer seemed unstoppable and then Nadal perked up and stopped him from dominating completely. He denied Federer the French Open for years and Nadal has the superior head to head record. It's a shame Nadal has all his injury problems now, it's probably stopped him from being one of the greatest of all time.

Imo it's not as intense, because it just can't afford to be. With a rivalry like Manchester United vs Liverpool, one side's fans can say much harsher things because there's less of a political background to it. You can't really say "I hate India" like you say "I hate liverpool" because it could be seen as just insulting the other country. Even something like Germany and England fans insulting each other (even though German fans in reality I think hardly care about England) is more likely to happen I think, because that won't contribute to something serious happening, whereas with 2 countries that actually have historical/political tension it could do, and most people don't want to see any deaths/increase the political animosity. Hence when they play each other each team always says things like "we really love to play against [India/Pakistan]" and pay more compliments than they would against some other random team like the West Indies or something.

I am an indian , i cant say "I Hate India"

yes ... what u are saying is absolutely right

I remember something ...

2 years ago .. when it was India vs Pak in the World Cup Semifinal , India invited the - then Prime Minister of Pak to watch the game with our PM ...
And then , there was so much intensity ... the Govt was urging the people not to create problems for Pakistan Players and Fans in India , not to spread Racial insults or rumors ...
Some parties were protesting heavily to stop the match and Send back pakistan team to their country [that happened during the entire tournament]

All becoz of the 26/11 Mumbai Attacks , and Kasab was still alive then

India vs Pak is not a normal Rivalry , its political and involves the pride of 2 countries who were one long ago .

Also , Three people including a Pakistani actor all belonging to Pakistan died out of shock after Pakistan lost the match .

Are you being sarcastic again....

edit: I still think a lot of fans won't be too vocal about it like with other rivalries because they don't to feed the political dispute. They might feel it in their heart but they have to tone it down because of all the problems from outside cricket. Cricket is used as a way to build a bridge between the countries.
