I would imagine we've all watched Dragon Ball Z/GT extensively here, and you all probably know what I'm talking about. One episode the characters the animation is very mature; crisp, clean lines with dark outline shading, very hard shadow contrast with extreme detail when it comes to clothing, scratches, blood, etc. Then the next episode, it looks like it was drawn by a 12 year old with Autism. Animation is extremely simplistic, no detail on the face, minimal shadows, odd, non-symmetrical lining, etc. What gives? One looks very realistic, mature, rugged, the other looks extremely "cartoony" if you will, very happy go lucky childish. This really ruins the immersion of watching the show for me. I mean seriously, this is exceptionally prevalent in all of GT, and the Buu saga. I'll try to give some examples: Horrible animation: http://spa.fotolog.com/photo/26/36/65/dbz__goku11/1208799406_f.jpg Great animation: http://images.wikia.com/dragonball/images/5/53/SSJ_Vegeta.jpg Horrible animation: http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/24300000/goku-ssj2-micketo-24320491-480-374.jpg Great animation: http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/24100000/ssj2-goku-goku-24168524-500-375.jpg Horrible animation: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120224121361/dragonball/images/thumb/2/2d/Super-Saiyan-Vegeta-Ready-To-Fight-With-Androids-20343.JPG/797px-Super-Saiyan-Vegeta-Ready-To-Fight-With-Androids-20343.JPG Great animation: http://www.animevice.com/super-saiyan/22-86/gohan/84-157653/gohang/83-46318/ Edited by Coolest, Jan 22 2013, 05:38 AM.

But that doesn't seem very professional. I mean especially with such huge differences in style. Not to mention the episodes ton is partially set on the animation style. Constant change is..tiring. |

Some of those images aren't even from the anime, you should've figured that out before criticizing it. Great animation for a span of 291 episodes is not financially sustainable. If they did not cut cost by hiring lesser quality animators, rest assured the anime wouldn't have reached completion. |

The thing is that the Dargon Ball anime adaptations were all very cheaply produced so TOEI (which automatically explains why it's cheap) outsourced them to multiple animation teams as a method of dealing with the limited animation budget they could muster at the time. That's also why the early episodes of the Saiyan Saga, and most of the non-Tenkaichi Budokai episodes of the original Dragon Ball have relatively poor animation while the other episodes look substantially better due to gaining more ad revenue (although it does hit south during the battle between SSJ Goku and Freeza, and the Garlic Jr. Saga).

Unless it is particularly bad I never really notice it much, they all blend in well. What I notice more from the effects of tight budget is when they loop and repeat the same shots in different scenes. |

His stuff isn't that bad in the original Dragon Ball, and Artificial Human Saga and following episodes. Oh and I disapprove of OP's breezy Autistic 12-year old analogy. Edited by DBZAOTA482, Jan 23 2013, 04:54 AM.

This is the same for basically every single Shonen battle series ever made, especially long running ones. They have to move the work between different teams and some are better (and more expensive) than others. It's not that bad, I've seen much worse and much larger variation in other series. |
We'll never be those kids again
