Just a little topic where we once again try to get into Mr.Toriyama's mind. We know that the mangaka of dragonball didn't really plan ahead in his writing all too well, so with this kind of style, using characters as plot points and devices is the best way to move the story along. So if this is the case, what do you think toriyama would have initially forseen his characters developing? (especially original DB era) Examples: .Do you think he originally intended for Krillin and Piccolo to be serious rivals to Goku throughout the series? .Do you think Bulma would have gone through a phase of character development through continuous losses of close friends? .Do you think ChiChi would have become on par with goku in fighting or developed a relationship with him in teen years before getting married, or was the quirky, abrupt marriage proposal good enough? .Would we be able to go into depth with the Nameless Namek and truely learn his origins? .Would Goku even have stayed as a child for much longer, or did he have to age to progress the story? .Would Vegeta have remained a dormant secondary villan throughout Z and then return in a few later arcs, or were his Namek exploits simply implemented to add tension? Just a few starters, I'm sure you guys can make something of this thread

Krillin yes, to some extent I think he was going to be a rival forever, even if always a bit weaker. But eventually the gap was made very big. Chi Chi yes, can imagine Toriyama doing this because it's entertaining. Vegeta originally was just going to be in one arc pretty much. The fans liked him so he was made into a more regular and permanent character. Toriyama originally wasn't going to go past the Emperor Pilaf arc, so would not have seen Goku as an adult. Not actually sure what I'm meant to do in this topic.... |

Well I know Krillin was originally supposed to be simply a rival. As for Piccolo I'm not too sure about him. He was Toriyama's favorite character until Mr. Satan came into the picture. As for Chi-Chi well I don't think even she could ever match Goku's power because she is only human. She could meet Krillin, Yamcha and or Tien's power though. Unless of course Toriyama ever decided not to make the humans so unfortunately weak by comparison to Saiyans. I don't know, but the Nameless Namek may be best as a mysterious being. Well personally I think Goku has to age to progress the story. Well Vegeta was originally supposed to die right after his and Goku's first fight in the Saiyan saga afterall and was inly allowed to live because of fan base. Also to add on to this thread I found out about something interesting: Toriyama originally planned to make romantic scenes for Vegeta and Bulma as well as Krillin and 18 in the original manga, apparantly in order to show some development , but his editors told him not add any romantic scenes because they believed that such scenes would not be of interest to boys. Yeah, they really believed that. Toriyama also did say that he was no good at romance but knowing what I know now I'm thinking he just didn't want to get his own bosses angry with him. Also I know that Toriyama originally wanted Android 19 and 20 to be the main villains after Frieza but his editors didn't like it. He then made Androids 17 and 18 to be the main villains but they were turned down too. So Toriyama made Cell as the new villain in what we now know as his Imperfect form but they didn't like how he looked so he changed Cell to transform into what we now know as his Semi-perfect form and then of course they didn't like that either so he had Cell in his Perfect form which his editors approved. |

The editors getting in the way of elements like character designs and romance scenes is bull*****, IMO. The one time they should truly have been involved is during the Boo Arc. Also, I believe the best place for AT to wrap up the story, altogether, was the 23rd Budokai, personally.

I found it strange how Piccolo turned good. I mean he was going to blow up that whole stadium with people in it and he blew that whole through Goku as a cheap shot and stamped on the wound while laughing and bragging about how he'd rule the world. In DB he had no sense of fairness or honour. In DBZ he seemed to be very honourable. The only thing to me that suggests Toriyama ever planned on him turning good is that filler scene in the anime were he randomly saves that boy and his mother. Of course there is a strong chance that those 2 he saved were in the crowd of people he tried to blow up along with many other children. After Piccolo having a change of heart I guess Vegeta changing too wasn't that crazy even though Krillin thought it was. I mean Piccolo was surely just as evil as Vegeta aside from that filler scene. When Vegeta changed it was over a long period of time. With Piccolo it seemed more sudden. |
| "The future of Gohan. The Future of Chi Chi. Not to mention the future of the entire universe. It all depends on me!!!! And I don't care if you're a million times stronger than me! I'm not going to let them down! So get ready Frieza because this time you're going Down!!!" | |
