Explanations for Goku losing his mature and serious personality?

At a certain point in DB Goku seemed to realistically mature and take things more seriously. Then late on in DBZ he seemed to revert back to acting more goofy and immature.

Throughout the whole King Piccolo saga the guy was a serious badass. Killing off Piccolo's henchmen in cold blood and rarely having a smile on his face. He was out for blood and didn't have time for stupid comments or goofy behaviour.

In the Piccolo Jr saga he did get a bit goofy at times and was even childish enough to steal Tien's belt during their fight. And he seemed kind of cocky at times during his fight with Piccolo like when he gave him that goofy smile up close right before jumping out the way and letting him get hit with his own blast. And letting his guard down when he thought he'd won to celebrate only to get a hole blasted through him. But he was still pretty serious overall.

In the Saiyan saga he was deadly serious against Raditz, Nappa and Vegeta. He was seriously angry when he returned to find his friends lying dead and took out his anger on Nappa.

On namek he still seemed serious outside of filler. Even more so as a Super Saiyan.

Against Cell he was serious but was dumb and cocky enough to give Cell a senzu bean.

The Buu saga is when he really seemed start acting childish. His overly relaxed attitude about the whole Buu thing until ***** hit the fan. And when he blasted Old Kai in the face. And putting his pride ahead of more important things, sometimes acting no better than Vegeta. He also seemed to not have that much anger towards Buu despite him killing all his friends including Krillin which had twice sent him over the edge in the past. Buu also killed his 2 sons and wife yet he still finds the time to act childishly.

Is this just a natural change in personality with him ageing or is it possible that Goku has taken too many hits to the head and suffered brain damage? Or maybe it's a long term effect of him hitting his head as a Kid.

I've also got another theory which is probably unlikely. Today I was watching the dubbed episode of him and Vegeta escaping Buu's body and there was one part that really made me laugh. It was the part when they return to full size and Goku says "Hey look! People popcorn!" Then Vegeta says "What is he on?". Just the way Goku talks sometimes makes it seem not entirely unthinkable that he could be on drugs. I mean if somebody in real life acted like him that is what you'd assume. But I guess that's the awesome thing about him. His personality is a bit larger than life.
"The future of Gohan. The Future of Chi Chi. Not to mention the future of the entire universe. It all depends on me!!!! And I don't care if you're a million times stronger than me! I'm not going to let them down! So get ready Frieza because this time you're going Down!!!"

Yeah, Son Kakarot is somewhat inconsistent. But he is still way more mature in the Z Portion of the series, than he ever was in the Emperor Pilaf-Fortune Teller Baba Arcs, so we should take note, on that. That's why I like DB Son Kakarot better than Z Son Kakarot, and prefer characters like Tenshinhan, The Nameless Namek, and Vegeta, all with terrific character development, and almost zero inconsistency in their personality.

Goku had so much experience , he didn't give a shet about the terror anymore , neither the Earth.

That old days when he got anger were all over.

Goku got a lot more calm & relaxed over the years.

As on the episode where Goku says "People popcorn", its Funi's fault.

The Japanese version never intended to make Goku goof as much as he did in the dubbed version.

There was a slight change in personality, but his overall attitude was constant.

Can't help it man. The dub made him look to the point anyone'd say "Hey, Goku's such a dumb, idiot. Irresposible Dad, such a joker. Vegeta's smarter".

Maybe it's just that having kids made him a little less serious about things. Or it could have been that his inexperience with such overwhelming power at the start made him take things a little more seriously, whereas later in the series he was much more experienced.

The out of universe explanation is inconsistent writing. The in universe explanation is that it depends on the time. Goku is shown to be serious in times that require it, ie. When facing a bad guy, when his friends die. The beginning of the Buu saga is a time of peace, so its understandable that he would be relaxed. The Saiyan, Frieza, Android, and Cell saga's weren't times of peace and relaxation.

Goku had a lot of faith in the new generation at that point, a grave mistake I might add. That is the in-universe explanation for his holding back on Buu as an SSJ3 as well as the fact his living world time was up. He also wanted to fight Majin Vegeta rather than help out with Buu since the dude has wanted that rematch since the saiyan saga and never got to enjoy a single bit of rest like the other characters in Z other than the 5 year time gap between dragonball and Z to just spar with pals and relax.

I think he changed a lot because he was getting older. He already passed the point in his life where he had to be serious and had to determinedly chase what he wanted all the time.

As a older, master of a fighter, I think he was starting to fall in the comfortable coaching role over the new generation. Even Piccolo showed a lot of this himself, since those pretty much started combat in the same time era.

It seems power has a reverse effect on the Saiyans, making them a bit softer over time.

-Gohan after transforming turned more peaceful and didn't want to fight Cell all of a sudden.
-Goku the stronger he got, the less serious he got and was more in a joking manner.
-Vegeta took some time, but look at the change in him as well.

When you think about it, the power those 3 were trying to achieve throughout the series was stressful and took a toll on them. That's all they were after for their reasons, but once they got so powerful, it's like the stress, desire, and seriousness for it made them calm down a lot.

I think it could also be that dying no longer had any fear for him. It was something that no longer worried him and once he realised that he just eased up.

That also relates to them being able to use the DBs anytime needed.

So, serious matters weren't that serious anymore, because they always had that fall back plan when needed. Back in the day when it actually took a year to find the DBs, that's when they went crazy if someone died or not; or was in trouble.

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

It was probably the family and having kids that made him lighten up. Either that or he simply grew out of the angst and anger that was over him in Dragonball, but, Kuririn's dying has always been a serious rage spot for Goku.

You also have to keep in account Goku set an example. If he was always serious and not smiling, he wouldn't give anyone hope. Goku wants to protect the people he loves the most, whether that be from physical harm or by giving them hope that they can succeed. In Dragonball, he could go off and be a lone wolf. In Dragonball Z, he was the foundation and had a family.

I guess lightening up over the years is normal then.

Piccolo grew up in the wild as well, hence making him have a tougher personality, just like Vegeta who was pretty much on his own(looking out for himself wise.). Piccolo started to soften up over the years, since he didn't have to be alone as much; same for Vegeta.
