What is your opinion on the portrayal of female characters in video games and why do you think that most protagonists are male?

I feel that some women in video games are strong and able. However, I don't like how some are made to be "perfect" looking. From what I've seen, most have Double D breasts and their curves are extremely proportioned. In real life, only like 8 % of women have a hour glass figure. These images are likely what cause some women to get plastic surgery or increase their breast sizes.

Most protagonists are male because most who play video games are men. Yes, there are women who play like myself, but that's usually the target audience.

Even Samus Aran from the Metroid games who is a great female protagonist, suffers from the typical stereotype of being given big breasts and a sexy figure/pretty face. One arguement for why this is the case could be that not enough females are employed by games companies. At least not in the development areas.

More women need to learn how to make games and get those kind of jobs to help solve this problem.

On the other hand, obviously it shouldn't just be down to women to make these changes. The male developers could be more responsible and have a plus sized female, protagonist. They have them on tv like Rozanne and the Vicar of Dibley. There's no reason why a game character couldn't be a similar shape without also being a caricature of a fat person.

Video games don't need to represent people and society. A lot of people play video games to be immersed in an experience and to escape reality. Making games more socially acceptable would just be a detriment to a lot of games, in my opinion.

Unfortunately, that won't happen. There are plenty of male protagonists that don't portray men in a good light either. Video games are different because people want to see themselves as a different character. They want to see themselves as "perfect" in a sense. This is why RPG games are so popular. Men just like women are given a bad stereotype in video games. I see plenty of them with chiseled muscles and rough attitudes.

That is true. However I still don't think we see enough good female characters in single player games. For example in Farcry 3, you go through a huge trial and risk death trying to rescue your girlfriend, only for her to start talking about how she wants to discuss their relationship. Now maybe there are some women in real life who are that self centered but I thought that she gave women a bad image. It's like how when women are on tv or in a film, they only ever talk about men. Point being that women aren't as sentimental and selfish as the media often makes out and that's something I think should be addressed in gaming too.

I get the feeling that this trope might also be getting forced into the new Tomb Raider game. I do hope not. Lara Croft was a great, genuinely strong, female protagonist so wouldn't want her character to be butchered by developers trying to make her into a typical Hollywood female.

You're right, the new Tomb Raider even looks like it. I don't think it's gonna be the same as previous TR games.

It's true that many women in video games are supposed to be "perfect", but it's not like it's different with females in most movies.

Usually many women in games are strong, but I'd say that they're still supposed to be cute or hot. ( Good examples are Lollipop Chainsaw and Bayonetta)

I tend to like more realistic characters in my games or else I CAN'T "escape" because it seems too ludicrous to identify with. The games I favour show women (and men) who are more natural, most times, focusing on both their balanced strengths and weaknesses. So.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I think game developers are probably worried about being called sexist.
Lets face it.
Men can never do anything right so women can't be realistically portrayed because then thats making them look less than 100% sex on legs as most female characters tend to be or aimed to be.

Grand Theft Auto...at least IV you get plenty of obese guys wandering around but not really any obese women. When its supposed to be in America somewhere thats just stupid.
But if there were obese women in it people(who don't play these games) would probably be angry at that and say its horrible "derogatory to women"

I hate those kind of people that have to moan about things like that(anything not female based stuff lol) why do they have to spoil it for the normal people who don't even care?

Also in Battlefield 3 you play as a woman at one point!
OMG
Woman in an FPS war game that isn't a random civilian with no real relevance...
