Something about the time machine and timelines that bugs me

Why was the time machine that Cell took to travel to the main timeline after killing Trunks set to the present timeline rather than the unseen timeline? The Trunks of that world would have no reason to go to the main timeline unless he'd been there before.

Could it be possible that the Trunks that killed Frieza and Cold in the main timeline was actually the one that got killed by Cell in the future and the one that comes to the main timeline is different to that one? It doesn't make sense overwise that Cell would go to the main timeline when the Trunks he supposedly killed had never been to the main timeline. Didn't Cell just go in and hit the button with the timeline set?

Also in the anime when Trunks describes the Androids to Goku he doesn't call them by any name or number but pictures them to look very different to the 17 and 18 of the main or future timeline. Could it be that he warned Goku, went back to his own time, killed the Androids by shutting them down, planned to travel back to the main timeline to inform Goku and the others, got killed by Cell, and then Cell came to the main timeline? And the Trunks that does come to the main timeline after the 3 years had been to a similar timeline to the main one where he also warned Goku and somehow mistook the main timeline for that one? Thoughts?

"The future of Gohan. The Future of Chi Chi. Not to mention the future of the entire universe. It all depends on me!!!! And I don't care if you're a million times stronger than me! I'm not going to let them down! So get ready Frieza because this time you're going Down!!!"

cell set the time machine to go farther back to make sure he'd have enough time to mature, creating a new timeline.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

Well that makes sense I guess. It'd be cool if they made a movie to show what happens in the unseen timeline.

movie 7 probably occurs in that timeline. the androids are deactivated, cell doesn't show up, and the computer releases 13, 14, and 15. in the main timeline, 13, 14, and 15 aren't released because the computer watched cell get his ***** kicked, and knew that they wouldn't be effective.

Listen, alternate timelines don't exist to begin with. They are created after ''time travel''. When Cell traveled to the past he created a different timeline, where Cell arrives in the past. As well as the arrival of Trunks. In the Future Trunks alternate future Cell wasn't there to begin with in the very past. That's why a different dimension was created.
There are many mistakes in specific issue seen in DB.

Trunks hadn't probably finished programming the coordinates. Cell interapted him and killed him. Trunks never had time to set the coordinates correctly. And Cell pushed a button for a different year. That's why Cell went so far back in time.

In general everything about the timeline always bugged me too. I literaly would stay up at night to try and figure out everything. lol

No, its stated in the manga and anime that Cell didn't know how to program the time machine. The coordinates were already set by Trunks. All he did was pushed a button.

wow, so cell was just that lucky, to go back far enough that he would finish maturing the exact same day the androids were released.

To borrow from Bleach-fandom parlance, we call that "plotkai." :p
