Novacane for the pain

I've had a bit of writers block recently, so I thought I'd try doing something else, which lead me to one of my older DBZ fics. I only wrote one chapter of it, so I decided to scrap it and start again. It's going to be the same core plot but I took out a Mirai Trunks subplot which I thought was unnecessary. This chapter moves at a quicker pace than the rest will because I find writing set up stuff like this a little boring so I wanted to kind of skip over it and get to the good stuff quicker. Anyway, whatever here it is.

Chapter 1

“Is there anyone else out there? Anyone left here at all?”

There was no response to his desperate cries; the only sound he heard was of the rain as it pelted down. He slowly looked around but all he could see was a thick fog of black smoke rising from the deep craters in the ground. He’d never felt so helpless, he’d never felt so alone.

“After all I’ve been through” he whispered, as that was all his fragile voice could manage. “After all these years of hard work, intense training and legendary battles, it all ends like this.”

With a painstaking amount of effort, he stumbled to his feet. His limbs screamed in agony, begging for him to stop moving. Yet he couldn’t, if there was one thing he had learned in his relatively short life, it was how to keep going forward. He had done since he was four years old and he wasn’t going to give up on it just because he was on the very edge of defeat, just because he was on the brink of dying.

He screamed out, willing the power contained within the depths of his being to come roaring to the surface. He had very little left to give but he still intended to give all of it. At the very least, he was going to leave this bastard with something to remember him by.

“Kamehame-“

He didn’t even get to finish naming his attack. With his senses dulled and his eyesight rapidly fading, he hadn’t even seen the movement from behind the smoke. In far less than a second, a hand had pierced through his stomach, tearing through several vital organs in the process. The pain was excruciating, he couldn’t help but scream in agony. As he calmed himself down, he looked up and stared at the vague figure before him.

“I’m surprised you’re still alive, I thought for sure that you had died” the man sneered, using the most mocking tone possible. “You’ve caused me a lot of trouble, Son Gohan. Let me look in to your eyes as I kill you, and allow you to join your pathetic father and worthless friends in the afterlife.”

Gohan wasn’t prepared to give him the satisfaction. He closed his eyes tightly, determined to not let him see the fear that was bound to be coming out of them. The problem with this was that he couldn’t be too sure when exactly the end would come. Although, he supposed that might also be a good thing. Instead, he tried to take his mind off of it, to bring himself to a happier time and place. Yet, there was only one thing he could think of, only one memory that his mind would bring him to: the day where this disaster first started.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“We there yet?”

“Almost.”

“We there yet?”

“Nearly”

“We there-“

“I’ll tell you when we get there, just keep quiet!”

Gohan glanced up and noticed the sly curl appear on the lips of his younger brother and knew that his mission was accomplished. He considered taking the “elder brother” route and telling him off for frustrating Bulma along with Trunks, but frankly he couldn’t blame either of them for being bored. After all, when you’re used to flying around at incredible speeds, the small Capsule Corp plane seems ridiculously slow.

“So remind me again why we aren’t flying there?” Goten moaned, seemingly having given up on annoying Bulma.

“Because it would look too suspicious, as we told you last time we asked” Gohan said, not even looking up from the book he was reading. “We’re trying to keep attention away from us as long as possible this year, we don’t want too much hassle from people.”

“Oh yeah, because we aren’t going to stand out when the fights begin at all are we?” Trunks remarked, his sarcasm obvious.

“Yes well, we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it” Gohan replied. “Although I’ll admit that our past at this tournament is a little troublesome, I’m sure they haven’t forgotten that two competitors flew off in the middle of the last tournament.”

“Yeah and I haven’t forgotten about that either” a particularly irritable Chi-Chi added. “Your father hasn’t been home for the past month, it’s like he doesn’t care about me at all.”

“Oh don’t be too hard on him Mom, you know he has good reasons” Gohan responded. “Uub doesn’t feel comfortable outside his own village, it’s the only way Dad could train him.”

Chi-Chi seemed ready to argue that point but mercifully Pan distracted her.

“So is this Uub kid going to be at the tournament as well?” Videl enquired.

“Yeah apparently, Dad wants to test him against a few of us guys to see how he’s improved” Gohan replied. “I must admit, I’m pretty interested to see how he does.”

“I couldn’t care less” Vegeta chimed in from his seat at the front of the plane. “I just hope Kakarot hasn’t lost any of his power training that brat. I want him to be as strong as possible when I beat him.”

Gohan rolled his eyes at Vegeta’s usual line, a sentiment which was shared by everyone else on the plane. Undeterred by this, Vegeta pressed on with another question.

“So where can we expect to find him once we get there?”

Gohan shrugged his shoulders.

“You know Dad, he doesn’t really plan specifics” he chuckled in response. “After we meet up with Krillin and Piccolo he’ll probably just come to us.”

The conversation on the plane continued in this fashion until the island finally came in sight. It was as breathtaking as ever, like a small drop of paradise in the middle of the vast ocean. The familiarity didn’t end there either, once he got off the plane he was met with the comforting sound of the crowds as they made their way around the island. He could smell the fast food vendors as they served their customers every whim and most importantly, he spotted some old friends off to the side.

“Krillin! Piccolo!” Gohan shouted out, as he walked over to the small group that were taking shade under one of the many large trees in the area.

“Hey Gohan!” the small middle-aged man grinned. “Where’s your Dad?”

“Your guess is as good as mine” Gohan answered. “Guess we’ll have to wait and see where he turns up this time.”

Over the next minute or so everyone gave their greetings to each other, including Krillin’s family and Piccolo.

“So, you’re fighting this year?” Piccolo asked, as he eyed Gohan’s gi.

“Yeah, thought I’d keep Dad and Vegeta on their toes” he laughed. “Plus I learned my lesson with how boring watching the last tournament was.”

“Hey come on, it wasn’t that bad was it?”

There was always something about Goku that made the people around him instantly happy. Gohan had never been completely sure what it was. He’d considered that it might be his carefree personality or his endearing naivety but he felt that there was more to it than that. It was like he exuded happiness. He saw it again as everyone, apart from Vegeta and Piccolo, crowded around him, giving hugs and crying in joy. Gohan chose to hold back and got a more personal greeting a minute later.

“Looking good Gohan, it’s been so long since I’ve seen you wearing that!” Goku exclaimed as he walked over. “I’m getting excited thinking about fighting you!”

Gohan had to supress a sigh. It truly was predictable that his father would show more excitement about fighting him than seeing him. Although, he knew that a fight would be a better way to bond, it’s just the way he’s always been.

“Hey Uub, is that you?”

Gohan had only just spotted the unassuming young boy behind Goku. He was impressed by how much the kid had changed in such a short amount of time. He was noticeably taller and had filled out much more. He was wearing the same Gi that the other members of the Son family wore, a symbol that he had been taken on as his father’s student.

“Hi Gohan, it’s nice to see you again” Uub replied, being a little too polite for Gohan’s taste but he let it slide. He knew that the boy wasn’t too familiar with everyone yet, so it was probably easier for him to be more formal.

“Come on let’s go” Vegeta groaned, as he began walking off on his own. “I’ve not come here to play happy families with you Kakarot, we need to get to the registration before it closes. I’m not willing to give up this chance to fight you one more time.”

“I see he hasn’t changed” Goku muttered to Gohan. “But he’s right, we need to hurry up.”

They made registration in time and completed the formalities quickly. The preliminary round, if it could even be called that anymore, was breezed through without difficulty. Vegeta even managed to avoid punching the machine through a wall, albeit he did so reluctantly. Eventually, it came time to say goodbye to friends and family before the draw for the tournament could begin.

“I’ll apologise for my father in advance” Videl chuckled as she gave Gohan a hug.

“It’ll be fine we’re all used to it by now” Gohan replied. “Although, I think we might need to have another word with Vegeta so that he plays along.”

After bidding farewell to their families for the time being, Gohan, Goku, Piccolo, Goten, Trunks, Uub, Vegeta and Pan all walked in to the area where the draw would take place.

“Goku! Is that you? You’re back again?”

The tournament announcer came scurrying over, his voice filled with excitement.

“Oh hey!” Goku replied. “Yeah, and I promise that we won’t leave early again this year.”

“I hope not, you have no idea how awkward that made everything last time” he said, although his tone was still friendly. “Well, I just wanted to wish you good luck before the tournament, I have a little soft spot for the old favourites you know.”

As this was occurring, Gohan scanned the area to see who else would be competing this year. At first glance, it appeared to be the usual group of professional martial artists and some young amateurs. Yet, two people did catch his eye. They stood off from everyone else; prefer to stand next to each other in a corner. That wasn’t the only thing that made them stand out though. Rather than the usual pristine outfits that were often worn to these events, they both chose casual wear, looking as if they belonged in the crowd almost. Neither seemed physically impressive either, in fact they could both be thought of as rather skinny in comparison to everyone else. It made him wonder how they could have possibly made it through to this stage of the competition. Occasionally, he noticed that the taller of the two, with the sleeked back black hair, would look over at them. There was just something about his stare that made him uneasy.

“Something wrong Gohan?” Goku asked him, clearly noticing his son’s silence.

Gohan didn’t respond for a moment. Was it worth saying anything? A big part of him thought he was just being paranoid. After all, he couldn’t sense any chi coming from them whatsoever. Even if they could supress, if their powers were a threat they wouldn’t be able to lower them to such an extent.

“No, it’s nothing” Gohan lied. “I’m just a little nervous, I haven’t fought properly for a long time now.”

Goku didn’t seem entirely convinced by this, but he eventually went along with it anyway. The draw then commenced in the same manner it usually did, with each competitor picking a number out of a hat, which would correspond with a placement on the board in front of them. After a couple of the martial artists had stepped up, Trunks’ name was called.

“Oh man,” he groaned, as he looked at his number. “I have to go first?”

The announcer confirmed that Trunks had drawn #1. Pan went next and drew #14, while Piccolo, using his usual alias of Ma Junior, drew #5. Goten was up next.

“Goten has drawn #2!” the announcer exclaimed. “That means that the first fight of the 29th World Tournament will be between Trunks Briefs and Son Goten!”

There was a noticeable gleam in Goten’s eye, and Gohan saw the same eagerness appear in Trunks. He figured that the only way to motivate either of them would probably be a fight against each other.

The draw continued with Uub drawing #18 and Gohan himself attaining #14. Goku took #10, while Vegeta was handed #8. The announcer looked down his list to shout out the next name.

“Okay, next up we have Abra!”

The smaller boy that Gohan had been watching began moving forward. He seemed to be thoroughly disinterested in the whole thing and even yawned as he reached in. Gohan had a look around and saw that no one was paying him any attention; they clearly didn’t see anything special about him. Yet, Gohan still had a feeling that he wasn’t wrong to keep an eye on him.

“And he draws #6! The third fight of the tournament will be between Abra and Ma Junior!”

Gohan tensed as the number was drawn, he really didn’t fell comfortable with seeing a person he cared about getting in the ring with that guy.

“Next is Kedavra.”

In contrast to his younger companion, the taller man walked forward with purpose. He shot Gohan a momentary glare, before proceeding to draw his number.

“And it is #7! Kedavra will fight Vegeta in the fourth match of the tournament!”

Kedavra walked back to join his partner but as he did so, Gohan noticed a small smirk quickly flash across his face. He took that as a sign that his suspicions weren’t completely ridiculous. However, he also decided that he best wait before acting on them. It wasn’t like he’d have to wait long to see them fight.

The rest of the competitors were drawn, with the announcer explaining that Mr Buu and Mr Satan were not present at that time and he would make the draw on their behalf. In a draw that surprised no one, Buu and Satan remained on opposite sides of the tournament. Gohan couldn’t help but smile at that one, his father in law really had no problem with continuing his charade.

“Aw man, Buu is number 3!” Goten said. “So even if I get through I have to fight him next? I knew I should have just stayed at home.”

“Well you don’t have to worry about it because I’ll be the one getting through to the next round” Trunks smirked.

“Competitors, you can now all make your way to the waiting area,” the announcer declared. “The first match will begin in ten minutes time. I’ll take this opportunity to wish you all good luck and I look forward to seeing all the wonderful fights to come.”

All 16 men made their way to the designated area, with Abra and Kedavra once again hanging at the back.

“Yeah, I’ll look forward to these fights too” Gohan thought.

Name puns are lame I know, but I couldn't think of anything else that might fit.

#= number don't need both

I never liked the whole punching machine thing, silliest thing Toriyama ever made up. Kicks, grappling and speed are important too. And anticipation andi the right choices, especially on the lower human level.

Good story so far Copy_Ninja. I like the time where the story falls in place. Dialogue is awesome, the story is awesome, and how realistic of a story it is. Please continue, I'll keep reading.
