The only way to escape is to 'clear' the game. Death in game means actual 'death' ---- The ten thousand who have logged onto the as of yet mysterious game 'Sword Art Online' using their Nerve Gear have been forced into this perilous death game and are trapped inside. Protagonist Kirito, one of the many gamers, has greeted this 'truth'. He plays as a solo player in the giant castle that is the stage for this game ---- 'Aincrad'. To meet the conditions of clearing the game and leaving this twisted virtual world, he must get through all 100 floors. Will Kirito have what it takes to clear the game, or will he die trying?

Watch first episode here: http://www.crunchyroll.com/sword-art-online/episode-1-the-world-of-swords-606739

This is an ongoing anime series with 17 current episodes. It's amazing.

Let me say this, I've seen and read probably around 200 anime/manga series' and this is easily my second favorite ever so far. The plot is amazing and intense. Here's my review with no spoilers for it:

Sword Art Online is an MMO game in Japan where players use Nerve Gear (a helmet) to go into a virtual world. The game sold thousands of copies at launch and lots and lots of teens got it. The creator of the game made some special features to the game. Most notably that if you die in the virtual world then you die in real life. Also, if someone in the real world attempts to remove your Nerv Gear (helmet) by force you will die in real life due to microwaves in the helmet. The only way out of the world is to clear 200 levels. The main character was one of the few beta testers who understand how the game works. He is soon known throughout the game for this strength and hopes to challenge the floor 100 and clear the game. of course there is some romantic parts, etc.

I love SOA tbh. It's odd because I don't often watch new anime, but this one I decided to check it out because of what I heard, and I love it so far.
Kirito is awesome. He honestly reminds me of my younger self. Independent, quiet but analytical, awkward, and loves food.

I just love the whole concept even if it's been done before. The mix of the plot and the characters is amazing. It's not some miracle powerup show. It makes sense and can get you invested on an emotional level sometimes.

As for Korito he is just flat out awesome. No spoilers but damn I love watching him in the show. His character is just badass as hell.

It's really worth it. Give it 2 episodes and you'll be hooked.

I love this show. It's new and sleek looking plus asks some philosophical questions here and there. Pretty neat if you ask me.

I've watched 5 episodes and I think it is alright. I'm not hooked by any means but as of now, I think it's above average. They force a lot of drama in cheap ways (thus far). I do think Kirito is a cool character but none of the others have done much for me. I'm still gonna finish it and I know I am making this judgement on only 5 episodes but based on what I have seen so far, I dont think its living up to all the hype. Just one man's opinion.

It is a cool show and concept and the animation is good but I just have a few nitpicks with the writing.

I've seen the 1st ep. Am planning on watching more, although apparently it doesn't make you sad, doesn't give you the development to really care when someone dies.

I really disagree with that, especially once you get into it and there are bonds that are made. This isn't some Shounen battle manga either so character deaths actually happen.

Another note for people who ahve watched only a few episodes. It really picks up once you get into it in my opinion.

That's because there is uncertainty behind death in that world equating to death in the real world. Unless of course you believe the gamemaster.

Gotta love this forum for topics like this, I was looking for a weekly anime to catch up on and it'll be this one, I'll start watching SAO tonight. Does it follow a manga or anything? Bah, screw this! *wikis it* lol

EDIT - Holy crap, first ep and it's awesome, and the opening/ending makes it even better, can't wait to catch up. I was wondering why they were so many SAO RPGs around and now I know, it's got a good mix of everything that I'd want haha in one.

EDIT 2 - Awesome, love the plot and everything, they really did the RPG setting well, and it gets a lot complex than I first thought, it's a bit psychological as well, it's a typical anime but it's pretty enjoyable, the main charies are cool as well.

EDIT 3 - Caught up, can't wait for the next ep (even tempted to go look for translations of the light novels, I hear there's even more VMMORPG. to be explored) The sense of realism really draws me in (not the many MMORPG refs in there haha) and lets me relate to the story, esp the whole virtual reality technology and what comes with it (people abusing it of course, and crazy people using them), the only thing that irks me that it takes one ep for a random girl to fall in love with Kirito but at least it's not a complete harem since his pairing is pretty damn solid. On a random note, it sometimes reminded me about Kingdom Hearts, but in a way those two are similar in genre anyway.

The manga is terribad. I really recommend not even attempting it. It's like a rough draft for the series to be honest.

As for the series, I'm glad you're enjoying it! Kirito is an awesome main character in my opinion. My favorite part was when they ended up fighting a boss alone and he breaks out his

Wow if it just summarises the anime than there's no point, usually the manga would add a bit more depth but I think the anime does it well. Love the openings, and the fact that people die commonly gives it a big sense of realism. The RPG element is just awesome, and the plots has unexpected twists.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Is it based on an ongoing manga? I think I'll start watching but would rather wait until there's 30 or so episodes seems pretty cool from gifs I've seen(thank you people spoiling scenes on other forums -_-)

I think it has a light novel and few manga(one of which is still going) although they summarize the anime not vice versa. One thing I love about this show is it's ability to start a completely new plot in another episode and end of that episode connect it with the several episodes that preceded it. Kirito is one my fav main characters in any show.
