MAGICAL GIRLS REPRESENT

I'm not going to argue over my personal beliefs involving the canon of the Dragon Ball series.

What I want to know is where everyone's pulling the whole "Toriyama says GT is non-canon" from? I haven't really found a source where he explicitly states it's true.

Dragon Ball Online is supposed to be more canon than GT, practically erasing it from canon itself, and Toriyama had loads more say in DBO than GT. But since Toriyama helped with ideas, developed some designs, and (unless I too am mistaken, since I no longer have access to my old magazines and websites from a decade ago) said that while he probably wouldn't have gone that direction himself he still enjoyed it. (Then again, it might be relevant to note that he also had sorta-kinda positive comments toward Dragonball Evolution.)

Not that people don't change over time. I'm just curious. Maybe it's right in front of my face and I'm too blind and naive to see.

Don't quote me on this, since I might be wrong, but I think that in the GT Perfect Files (or somewhere), Toriyama was said to have mixed feelings about it and told his fans to consider it an alternate universe to his work.

Might try to look into it right now.

Dragonball Online is considered more canon since Toriyama had a bigger role in it, whether he enjoyed GT from a fan standpoint is irrelevant in my opinion. That being said, from what I've seen, Dragonball Online doesn't have nearly as much depth to it's story as GT.

Toriyama said he considered GT a nice "side story" to his original comic, so it's not canon by the words of the man himself.

I'm going to say this, it doesn;t matter what he says. Toei amd Bird owned the rights and licenses legally to all characters, it matters what they say and they called it the continuation of DB/Z. He may have came up with it, but its business and business and legality says it was

Not that I don't believe you, but is there also a source for this then? Cuz that'd satisfy me enough.

It doesn't really matter what business and legality say actually. If the author doesn't consider it canon, and it's not part of his original comic, it's not canon by definition alone.

Well if it you want to get into it, the Anime that they made isn't canon to the series either, so really their view is kind of irrelevant. There is no canon continuation of the series because Toriyama is the only man that could do that.

Akira Toriyama

My sincerest gratitude to all those who bought this DragonBall GT DVD box.

Being a lazy bum by nature, I was absurdly happy when I managed to safely finish up DragonBall's serialization, and finally be released from Deadline Hell. The TV anime people wanted to continue for just a little bit more, but I [just couldn't do] any more than that…And so, I left the DragonBall anime completely up to the anime staff, story and all. That was "DragonBall GT".

In car lingo, GT means "Gran Turismo": a fast, high-powered car, in other words. But in this case, I had GT mean "Grand Touring", a great journey, since the scenario was that they'd be running around the universe.

For GT, all I did was just come up with the title, design the initial main cast and some of the machines, and also do a few images. However, I was able to rest easy handing things over to the excellent staff, who had continued on DragonBall for all this time. In particular, the animator Nakatsuru-kun is amazingly skilled, and mastered the peculiarities of my pictures in no time at all, to the point where there were even times when I couldn't tell whether I had drawn a certain character design, or if he had. For instance, one of Nakatsuru-kun's designs is "Super Saiyan 4", which appears in GT, and the picture above is a portrait that I drew looking off it. Did I draw it well?

DragonBall GT is a grand side-story of the original DragonBall, and it'll make me happy for us to watch and enjoy it together.

toriyama called GT a nice side story, check the interview for the DBE release party, he was asked about GT.

kblo is right about he legality, but what toei DOESNt have the riht to do is call anything they make a sequel.

jus related and based on characters created by toriyama. GT is not canon to DB, it never was.

its a continuation of toeis take (retelling) adaptation OF the original manga, and asked for toriyamas help with it to draw attention and attempt to be authentic.

In reality, the DBZ series isnt canon either, its a retelling with a few quirks.

toei made DBZ the anime, and GT the anime, those two are related to one another, its no different than companies lke kodansha who literally changed the entire concept of sailor moon and made it for girls and toddlers, sure its empowering, but sailor moon the manga is pretty violent. As is most others.

Akira the movie doesnt even compare to the manga, and its banned in a crapload of countries.

adaptation does not = original work. just my take.
