Ultimately...why do Chi-Chi and Yamcha get such a bad rep among the fandom?

Yamcha

He is very often ragged on for being a weakling and for being a "low-life, playboy bandit". Given he's not the strongest but aside from Goku and Gohan, he has the most heart among the Z-Senshi (like when he took Goku back to his home to receive his medicine when he had the Heart Virus and not holding a huge grudge over losing Bulma to Vegeta) and the fact that he showed more concern for focusing on his Baseball career than training basically 24/7 like Goku, Vegeta, and Tenshinhan during those 7 years shows that he's one of the more human characters in the series instead of being another generic battle-addict. Also, I refuse to he's a playboy. He's not my favorite but I like him.

Chi-Chi

Aside from Yamcha, she's the most horribly maligned character in the series for her attitude towards Goku and Gohan, and I kinda don't see why. She stays loyal to her husband even though the guy pretty much puts training and fighting above the family, and puts her through hell at times. Also, she only wanted the best for her (then) only child (most of stuff she does is legitimate in terms of raising a child). Education is important and these battles that they get themselves into are highly dangerous especially since Gohan would be in the care of a naive, and irresponsible husband. Although I can understand someone finding her annoying and overbearing but those "annoying" and "overbearing" attributes manifests in themselves because she's an extremely caring person, as opposed to Bulma who was vain, self-serving, and dishonest. Chi-Chi was none of that stuff but in fanfics, she's often made out to be a manipulative ***** who only cares about her selfish reason and one guy even said Goku should have blasted her with a Kamehameha for "making Gohan study".

After reading some fanfic called Saiyan Unleashed and countless comments of Yamcha being a loser. I felt a thread like this should have been made since they seem to get the most undeserved flack from the fandom.

I don't mind Yamcha, but I don't like how he was always scared to go into battle. To me he never showed bravery.

As for Chi Chi, I don't like her attitude. Im not a big fan of how she always forced Gohan to study instead of train. I would have loved to see Gohan stronger than ever in the Buu saga, but Chi Chi slowed him down.

Chi Chi was always sort of annoying. Then again, so was Bulma back in the Dragon Ball days. I liked Chi Chi at the 23rd Budokai (yep, based on image......). Most of the hate comes from her trying to give Gohan what she sees as a good future, when the fans mostly want Gohan to just go and fight. The English dub gives her an annoying voice too I think.

Yamcha, idk, it's just trendy pretty much.

Yamcha went against Tambourine, despite having a broken leg. That was pretty gutsy.

He also went 1st against the saibamen (....yeh....I know....)
and he wasn't afraid to go up against the androids, even though he knew that they were probs really strong.

edit: inability to multiquote ftw

I didn't like how Yamcha was a giant wuss in the face of some battles. The only thing that was really keeping him back was himself. Chichi was (to be blunt) an illogical idiot. But I still don't really mind her.

Both characters had merit in the story-line, so I'm good with them.

Death can do that to a guy. He was scared to die again, and Gero was the cherry on top. I also think he was so far from the guys he shared the uniform with in Krillin and Goku it hurt his perception. Krillin died bad once, even worse the second time, nearly killed and had every bone in his body basically broken many times, and the Buu filler just showed a vast difference as Krillin stepped up to Super Buu like the Saiyans or Piccolo would while he ran scared and didn't even try to protect he women or kids. It doesn't help that Goku died so heroically either both times. He was associated with their school and characters and in comparison he was the one who realized his mortality and let it control him, while Goku was too much of a Saiyan to be controlled by fear, and Krilin was just way too loyal to the Saiyans and Piccolo to not try his hand at helping them if it got him killed despite knowing his inferiority.

Chi Chi, well because she is truly a single mom with a deadbeat dead as a husband and wants to protect her kids and be a good mother, as she didn't have a mother herself. People hate that she calls Goku on his ***** and wants and expects her sons to be more responsible and mature well rounded and educated people who can help socie by more than throwing a punch.

Yamacha just lost all his fire after the Saiyan saga, I think just due to Vegeta and Piccolo turning good and then Gohan coming up their was just too many characters to manage at t hat point.

Chi-Chi I have not have for however, she was trying to be a good mom and give Gohan a good future, I put the blame on Gohan for not keeping his power in the Buu saga, no way he couldn't get a light training regime that wouldn't interfere with his studying.

I think he would have made everyone in the Buu saga better if Gohan was stated as strong or stronger than his Cell games self however.

Chichi is hated because of the anime, in the manga she's quite normal (expecially during Cell and Bu saga).

Yamcha is hated because of Toriyama. XD I personally don't hate him, but I have to say that the author doesn't care him very much.

I actually really like Yamcha. And he only really got unnecessarily scared in the Buu saga. The other sagas he was no more scared than the others.

Chi Chi I like too. She's meant to be comic relief, and she needs to be tough because Goku's always submissive.

Gohan was never a fighter by heart so he wouldn't grind like Goku does, and as for "forcing" him to study, Gohan himself wanted to become a scholar. He repeatedly states in canon material that he'd rather study than fight on a regular basis, he was only reluctant to it when it was to fight (which was a necessity).

Also, she allowed Gohan to miss out on 3 years of school so he can train for the Android Invasion (on the grounds he'd quit afterwards), and allowed him to train with Goku in the RoSaT.

Well, telling by comments most of the bizarre Chi-Chi-hatred is based on a combination of filler-based incidents and the effects of the old FUNimation dub.

It's kinda like the case with Rei/Raye (anime ramps up their issues, and old dub makes them into mean bitches).

I understand Chichi's concern for Gohan, I mean any mother should be like that in all honesty. But Chichi has flatout stated that Gohan's studies are more important than the fate of the world, that's just...wow...

As for Yamcha I like him, he tried to save the world so that makes him a hero in my book.

I've got nothin' against Yamcha, he's just a typical human who knows martial arts and is considered a Z-fighter.

As for Chi Chi, I just wanna hit her and make her SHUT THE **** UP!!! . . .sometimes

I never said she was nice. I'm just saying the old FUNimation dub makes it 10x worse (in the Japanese version, it was presented more in the light of a stereotypical Japanese housewife/mother than being uber obnoxious if anything) since she's a secondary character (at best) like Yamcha and Tenshinhan, she was not worth looking into. They just slapped the easiest assumption about them, and there aren't that many fans to point out or correct them.

Japanese fans know she's not always that mad or protective of Gohan.
