Did Toriyama always intend for Piccolo to turn good?

In DB he seemed so ruthless that it would be hard to believe he could ever change. He tried to blow up the entire crowd in his fight with Goku and also fought dirty with no sense of honour by blasting Goku in the back when he had his guard down. Then he tortured Goku by stamping on his wound while laughing maniacally.

The only thing in DB I can think of that even suggests he had some good in him is that one scene where he saves that boy and his mother from being crushed by a rock falling from the tower. That seemed very strange considering he later tried to blow up the entire crowd which probably had kids in it. Maybe the scene was filler but it seems strange if Toei would decide to add that and then Piccolo later turns good.

The only thing crazier than Piccolo changing is Vegeta changing imo.

"The future of Gohan. The Future of Chi Chi. Not to mention the future of the entire universe. It all depends on me!!!! And I don't care if you're a million times stronger than me! I'm not going to let them down! So get ready Frieza because this time you're going Down!!!"

Seeing as how Piccolo Jr was introduced late in DB, and turned good very early in Z, I have to think that was his intention all along. He would have either been killed off or rendered irrelevant had he not turned.

I think so yes. They had already done King Piccolo, so it wouldn't be too interesting to just have the same stuff happen again basically.

Also, Piccolo is his favourite character. He probably planned his favourite.

It's possible but this is Toriyama. He's admitted to never even thinking of what he'll do next week, let alone next saga.

^Yeah, exactly. AT wrote the manga with an "I'm wingin' it" attitude. He just writes whatever he thinks of as he goes without any sort of grand scheme.

True that, but it sounds like when he 1st designed Piccolo, he was already his favourite character, so I wouldn't be surprised if at that point he decided he wanted to keep him involved, and the easiest way to do that is to have him become a hero.

Yeh, true. It could go both ways.

It definitely makes sense that Piccolo would change his ways, and I really do like the character as a good guy. However I've come to like that personality after fan*****ing the way he got to that state of mind, because at the beginning of DBZ, we just had to make the assumption that he has changed his evil ways.
