Which point in the series in the anime/manga do you think the style of the characters look the best? I think, when it comes to the Anime, it's the Android Saga hands down, with honorable mentions to Saiyan and Freiza sagas. I think the best Art style (even though I love all of it) in the manga is on Namek. Edited by POOHEAD189, Oct 6 2012, 04:50 PM.

It amazes me if anyone would say with a straight face that Saiyan, Namek, Frieza Saga looks better (Anime). Cell & Buu Saga's style was far more defined, on-model, great artwork, better animation, of which exactly contrasting with Saiyan, Namek & Frieza Saga. The Manga's style varies though. Cell & pre-Buu Saga looks best, though Frieza Saga comes close. |

Depends on the episode, since each episode has a different animation team for the most part. But overall, the Boo Arc had the best animation, probably because it had the highest budget. |

I thought the Boo animation (when not guided by manga) had absolute horrible animation. |

Some of the episodes did, but most had top notch animation IMO. I just detest Majin Vegeta's spiky afro. God no...nightmares. |

I don't really pay that much attention to detail with this sort of thing but the overall style of character designs seemed to change a lot as the series progressed. I noticed that Goku seems to get much bigger and more muscular as he gets older. Compare his size in the Piccolo Jr Saga to the Frieza Saga and you'd swear he'd been on steroids. Then in the late Cell/Buu Saga his chin seems to get bigger as does everyone else's like Piccolo's, Gohan's and Vegeta's. Vegeta also seems to grow a hell of a lot for someone who's middle aged. At first he's about the size of Frieza's 1st form then by the Buu saga he's much taller and more muscular. And the way kamehameha's looked seemed to change at some point from being like a ball of energy with a beam shooting out of it to more of a streamlined beam. And why is it that on the second episode of DBZ everyone seems to have big ears? Edited by 90sDBZ, Oct 6 2012, 11:58 PM.

| "The future of Gohan. The Future of Chi Chi. Not to mention the future of the entire universe. It all depends on me!!!! And I don't care if you're a million times stronger than me! I'm not going to let them down! So get ready Frieza because this time you're going Down!!!" | |

This is literally a cringe worthy clip from Toei's animation of the Boo Saga. Although, I do admit that they seriously had some great animation for the Saga in general. |

Different animation teams. Some just went in and did the deed while others went in and put passion into their stuff.
Yeah, that's just terrible. He even has eyebrows at one point. I wish the animation was consistent, but I understand it's hard to do that with a budget. |

I guess it was back then. There are some animes nowadays that have 300,000 dollars an episode budget that don't have any flaws. |

YES. Those two styles are my favorite, personally. I loved those episodes because of it, and the choreography, but I doubt they had anything to do with that aspect. Lol, Goku looks special in the right half of the first comparison, literally. Edited by Pyrus, Oct 7 2012, 12:20 AM.

Manga: 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai Arc - Saiyan Saga It's similar to the round art style beforehand but with the more refined details that we find in DBZ . After that, it became a tad too pointy (and a bit suckish by the Majin Boo Saga) for my likings. Anime: Any episode supervised by Tadayoshi Yamamuro (山室直儀) and Keisuke Masunaga (増永計介) More so the former, his talents had set the standards of excellence in terms of art and animation for Dragon Ball since his debut in Episode 122 of DBZ and he puts the animation quality in tons of anime today to shame. Nowadays, almost all calendars or any art cover is designed by his gifted hand. As for Masunaga, I love how his art and animation particularly during fight choreography in how he uses distortion to add to the fluidity, even though the art style very different from how the manga looks. |

Oh, that's done by Last House. They used to be a fine and competent but cheap animation team in the original Dragon Ball and the earlier episodes of DBZ. Personally, they were actually one of my favorites back then but somewhere around the Cell Saga, many of Uchiyama's animators had left the team and he started stepping in to do Key Animation himself. From them on, any episode that Last House gets their hands on would very often have the cartoony look of their art style extremely exaggerated (which we call pale cartoon back at Kanzenshuu) accompanied with generally stiff movements, and frame rate that's low even for anime standards.
