This happened within a segment of filler (DBZ Episode 104 -106):

Vegeta being portrayed like a cowardly villain as he is happy over Goku's potential death because it would make him #1 by default, and talks about using the Dragon Balls so he can rule the world. TOEI forgot the only reason he wanted immortality in the first place was so he can overthrow Freeza, and the real Vegeta would be infuriated over being #1 by default (which he was in the following episodes).
Actually Vegeta originally wanted immortality so that he (and Nappa) could fight forever. He just changed the reason when he brought Freeza into the story.
I know, I'm just saying TOEI was briefly portraying Vegeta in a completely dishonest light for no reason.
