He's never had a problem with fighting before (Other than Nappa but that's understandable). Why would he train 3 years for the Androids and then 1 year for Cell if he didn't plan on actually fighting?

Why would he train 3 years for the Androids and then 1 year for Cell if he didn't plan on actually fighting? One of the most forced plot points in the series imo, just look at how he charged in to everything on Namek after having barely any time to prepare for that. Can't think of too many others. While they are underdeveloped, Dragon Ball characters do at least tend to stay pretty consistent with their established character.

Posts: 1,998 Group: Member Member #7,432 Joined: March 11, 2012	Tien not wanting to train in the hyperbolic time chamber because he thinks he wouldn't be much help, but he trains every day of his life and before that he stalled semi perfect cell with his tri beam and later helps Gohan with the others in the kamehameha struggle.

Goku in GT running around a building like a coward to escape Nova Shenron. Vegeta on the filler parts where Goku's still fighting Frieza on Namek and Vegeta's acting like a totally evil dick on earth when at that point he's not really meant to be that evil anymore. Goku killing various villains in cold blood in the movies and GT without so much as a warning. Piccolo getting angry with Goku for making Gohan fight Cell saying "He's a scared 11 year old boy" even though he'd put Gohan through a year of hell himself when he was only 4 and tried to get him to fight the saiyans who could kill him in one shot. Actually I'm just gonna say Goku through most of GT. He just seemed sort of stupid in a different way and just wasn't the same adventurous kid he was in Dragonball. For example the infamous scene of him feeling hesitant about getting through a slow moving fan while Goku in DB would have dived through it right away full speed ahead with a smile on his face. He put Gohan through that training before he developed a bond with Gohan. It was through that training that he became good friends with Gohan actually. That's why he sacrificed himself for him, think Piccolo putting Gohan through the training and than sacrificing himself are definitely contrasts but its to highlight his character development.

Maybe even Goku throughout most of Z. When he was a kid in DB he seemed a great deal meaner than he was in Z. He wasn't afraid to kill or spare villains even though they were doing evil things. Tambourine killed Krillin and Goku went crazy but when Frieza did he transformed into an angry Super Saiyan and still tried to help and let Frieza live.

I mean why would he even pause at it at all when he's Goku and could just charge through like it was nothing?
