Characters that appear more poerful but are actually much weaker

Throughout the series characters have been portrayed as having godlike power. They always make every new enemy more powerful(in most cases) and try to make them appear as powerful as you can imagine.

But a lot of the time characters that are actually MUCH more powerful just don't appear as powerful.

For example take nappa. He seemed absolutely godlike how he blew up a whole city effortlessly and made the earth shake as he powered up and even made gohan fall over. He had lightening and caused the sky to go dark and with a simple sweep of his hand made a HUGE crater almost killing chiaotzu.

Then you have the androids who look like weaklings and don't even create explosions that big yet we know they could oneshot nappa.

And look at ss goku and 100% frieza. They're practically on steroids and seem to be portrayed as powerful as characters could possibly be. The punches they exchange alone look and sound like they could destroy the universe.

Then we have goten and kid trunks who are just weak looking punks that don't make any huge explosions or make the ground shake yet we know that frieza saga goku and frieza are like ants compared to them in terms of power.

And there's also the thing with goku and piccolo seeming much weaker at the start of z than at the end of db.
"The future of Gohan. The Future of Chi Chi. Not to mention the future of the entire universe. It all depends on me!!!! And I don't care if you're a million times stronger than me! I'm not going to let them down! So get ready Frieza because this time you're going Down!!!"

Creative design to keep you interested throughout. If you compared let's say nappa to kid boo nappa obviously doesn't stand a chance but at their debuts they were the strongest oppenent so to portray them as powerful they had to make them look overpowered. And with dbz being all about action packed that really is the best way Akira Toriyama could illustrate it.

Yeah that's true. What I find strange is that if nappa and vegeta in the saiyan saga can make the planet shake and cause the sky to go dark and make an eletrical storm then how is it that ss3 goku doesn't actually destroy the planet.

The only way I can explain that is because they're evil.

Plot. It dictates all.

Besides, every new villain needs a more ridiculous feat than the last. After planet-busting, what's left?

Yelling and breaking cities in the process, I suppose.........

That's true about Nappa, the way he powered up made him seem like Broly

Syn Shenron: Oops. Guess I used a bit too much. But now you know what I'm capable of.

SS4: Your power's amazing! You destroyed the entire city with one blast..

SS4 Goku amazed by Syn Shenron's feat and yet Nappa did the same thing in early dbz.

because it's not directly about power. it's about control. nappa had about as much control over his pl as goku had over ssj3. so both wasted huge amounts of energy simply powering up, and caused these huge dramatic effects. it was simply that they were not competent with the process of powering up to those respective levels.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

for those that blindly follow word of god

GT is all filler though, it's inconsistent.

The ways to portray power had to change. During saiyan saga, it seemed impressive if the villain easily destroyed a city, or during the namek saga if the villain had enough power to destroy the planet. However during the latter arcs, he had to portray their power differently. Blowing up a city wasn't anymore a sign of great power, rather owning a chracter who owned a character who owned a character who blew up a planet.

It's a common rule in shonen series; increased size will only make the main villain stronger, conversely, the bigger and/or more stupid-looking the main villain's henchmen are, the more likely they are to die first.

I always thought that everyone just concentrated their ki to be more powerful in a smaller area. They don't want to blow up the planet after all. A very weak ki attack can destroy a building, A fighter can choose to spread out the power of their ki attacks for mass devastation if they please.

The whole impressive thing about Vegeta's sacrifice was he was able to generate enough ki to wipe out buu except he spread it out over a massive distance
