Many thought Nintendo wouldn't release a revised version of the 3DS so soon after its release. But they did. And I'm very glad they did as I thought the original 3DS was horribly designed. They address most (if not all) of the original's design flaws with the 3DS XL. I'm going to go through what has changed in point form. - Let me start off with the huge screens. You really don't grasp how big they truly are until you see them in person. They're massive! The biggest screens ever on a Nintendo handheld. 90% bigger than the original's. And only just smaller than the Vita's. You would have to put the two systems next to each other to tell the difference in size. The games look so much better on these screens than they did on the original. Take Mario Kart 7 for example. Everything really pops out at you now. The colours seem more vibrant. One problem with the huge screens is the pixels show up a lot more now. The outlines of things can be quite blurry in some games.Little graphical imperfections show up a lot easier now. But this can be easily overlooked thanks to some impressive looking visuals and the great 3D. - Now for the 3D. It has been improved a lot. Things stick out a lot more and it just looks really impressive. You can really tell how improved it is after going back to the original 3DS. Now some websites claim that the sweet spot for the 3D has been improved. But for me I think it's slightly harder to find and maintain. You have to hold the system completely still. So with the improved 3D effect comes the worse sweet spot. Can't win them all I suppose. - The paint and plastic. They have gone with a different paint to the original. Opting for a Matte finish on the XL. Instead of the Gloss on the original. This looks really nice imo. And it doesn't get anywhere near as many finger prints as the original. Is still gets some. Just not as many. God the original was terrible for finger prints. The plastic feels cheaper than the original. Especially on the inside. At the same time it also looks sturdier. It's hard to explain. Some minor changes. - Improved battery life. From what I can tell it lasts at least an hour longer than the original. - Hinge feels a lot sturdier and has 3 viewing positions that it locks into with a click. - Stylus has been moved from the back of the system to the right side. I can't stress how much of an improvement this is. Nothing worse than having to flip the system over to get the stylus from the back. Much more convenient on the right side. - The SD card slot has also been moved to the right side of the system from the left side. And the earphone jack has been moved from the bottom middle to the bottom left. - The 3D slider and the volume control aren't loose any more like on the original. Feel much sturdier. And the 3D slider has a click to it when turned off now. - The Select, Home and Start buttons while improved over the original, still aren't perfect. They still aren't really buttons. They offer very little input when pressed. Well that's all I can think of at the moment. If you have any questions feel free to ask. |
