Welcome, if anyone happens to read this, it shall not so much be a review as a guide (I was not sure if I should have put this here or in the main section....sorry .)If You are thinking of buying the game in time for next month's sequel, or already have the game, I'm here to give You a topic full of hints, tips and general info You can use to make Yourself a star Borderlands player. Lets start with class builds: Roland:The soldier. Roland is Your average shooter class, be is best used with assault rifles and shotguns. Roland is the everymans choice, he has the second fastest level up rate from my own experience and can be suited to solo or team play very easily, even both at once. His action skill deploys a turret which is provides limited cover and will attack enemies. Lets get onto his best builds. Solo play: When playing Roland alone You will want to put a lot of skill points into the infantry tree, it will upgrade Your damage with all weapons, make Your turret stronger and provide You with certain buffs, this tree will make You a pseudo-tank role, if You have a few spare points You want to use focus on the support tree, You'll want that ammo regen for later in the game. I recommend maxing out the impact, sentry, scattershot(If You favour shotguns,) Metal storm(If You favour speed and reduced recoil,) Refire for quick use of the turret and then put some points into guided missile for extra damage, any leftover points should be evenly attributed to these abilities in the support tree: Stockpile(Ammo regen.) Defense(Shield's matter.) Co-Op play: You're going to want to focus a lot on the medic and support tree's, and put a few points on the sentry skill too. I would suggest maxing out: Aid station(Health regen.) Cauterize(Shooting allies gives them health.) Revive(Deploying the turret near downed allies will revive them automatically.) Stat(Shooting an enemy activates a radius around You, all allies inside that radius with regain health slowly, as will You.) Once You are done there, possibly focus on sharing points on the support tree, with stockpile and barrage being good choices for additional combat aid. Roland is a very easy to use and good for team and solo play, if You aren't too sure of Your skill or think something might be challenging, Roland is a good choice. Roland Tips and Tricks: A good idea with Roland is to figure out where Your enemies are and stay behind cover, standing up to take fire before crouching again, with focus on his shields You can just stand there, but for a lot of the later game You will want to use the turret and take cover often. The shields that the game claims the turrets give do not work, the safest place is directly behind the turret for cover, but it is a good idea to keep the enemies as far away from the turret as possible so it has an extended time on the field due to no damage. When playing online people will really appreciate the healing and ammo regen the turret supplies from the medic and support tree, and if the turret does some good damage They wont mind, as EXP is shared among the party. As such, if You find Your team to be stuck at a certain room, find a good amount of cover and deploy the turret facing toward the enemies, the range of the healing and ammo regen should be able to reach both sides, so everyone can stay in cover or shoot from safety while the turret provides support fire. Do not pass up the skills I have left unmentioned, a larger ammo capacity and a larger magazine for Your gun are very useful if You have a very good gun such as a Hydra or a Cyclops. Roland makes a very good partner for Mordecai, Mordecai can provide cover fire whilest Roland deals with most of the enemies up close, it may sound like an uneven match but You'll be happy Mordecai is there often, because there are a lot of enemies to be faced. (Mordecai can only join You via online play, there are no assisting NPC's to help You fight, You will only be able to partner up online.) ----------------------------------------------------- Brick:The beserker. Brick was my last choice of characters because he seemed so generic and boring, but I was wrong, especially considering Brick can easily become invincible. His ability is to go into a rage mode, attacking and dealing massive damage with his fists. He favours shotguns and rocket launchers. Solo Play. A good idea for Brick is to max out everything on the first row, this will set him up nicely as an all-arounder, but only do this if nothing later in the tree sounds that interesting to You. I suggest maxing out the Brawler tree: Endless rage(Increases the duration of beserker mode.) Iron Fist(That melee damage bonus also counts in beserker mode.) Heavy handed(You will kill things a lot as Brick, bonus damage? Good news.) This is a matter of choice really, at this point You should choose prize fighter or short fuse, the former will provide You with more loot if You get a beserker mode kill, while the latter decreases the cooldown, perhaps share Your points between each? Blood sport(Health regen is a good thing, even for Brick, his name is no joke.) Co-Op play: You'll want to focus a lot on the tank tree, which will draw a lot of fire to You while Your allies do a lot of the damage. Get to work on the first two skills, hardened and Safeguard, they will buff Your health and shields respectively. Next is another choice for Brick, many will prefer You to help more than just divide damage, so You could go for bash, which has a chance to daze enemies, or juggernaut, which gives You huge damage resistance for a short period after killing an enemy. As the tank, You will likely stay in the fray a long time, however if You get downed, the diehard skill will give You extended bleedout time and give You extra health upon revival, which can be useful, but I suggest maxing out the Payback skill, as it makes you deal extra damage once Your shields break. And the final skill on the tree which increases Your endurance is unbreakable, which will start quickly regening Your shield as soon as it breaks for 5 seconds(longer or more recharge at maximum.) Bricks other skill tree, blaster, is basically his weapon tree, focusing on rocket launchers and shotguns. Put a few points on: Rapid reload revenge. These will help You out for non-melee damage. Brick tips and tricks: Brick is huge, by far the largest player character, so if You get downed or someone else as Brick gets downed, go over and crouch behind them to revive them, the risk of You getting hit is minimal and he takes no damage until he gets back up, use this to Your advantage. With Brick You will find that by level 22 Your beserker mode comes back very quickly, this is good, as Brick's fists in beserker mode do about as much damage as an equally leveled rocket launcher. Brick can take a ton of damage, but having a good shield helps, prize fighter will provide You will some fair cash to spend on increasingly greater shields. Brick makes a good partner for Lilith, while she is not as fragile as Mordecai she makes a decent all-around character and can use some diverted attention while dealing damage, if You have a full party, I suggest You send these two off together, They can do major damage. Brick has no skills that actually buff the team at all, everything is centered on him, and so it should be, get between an ally and an enemy and normally, You and your ally will quickly dispatch the enemy wil minimal damage. ----------------------------------------- Lilith:The siren. Lilith is a lot of fun to play, she is mostly a DPS character as she uses the elemental weapons more so than the other characters. Her ability is phasewalk, which turns her invisible and sends out a shockwave, while phasewalking Lilith is invincible and can move really, really fast. Upon entry and exit of phasewalk she will do a shockwave attack, and ideal stratagy is to melee an enemy while in phasewalk, doing extra damage can causing the exit shockwave. She favours elemental weapons, SMG's and repeater pistols. Solo Play: Lilith will start of rather weak on or off-line, but by the time you reach to end of any tree You are one of the, if not the, most over powered playable character in the game, rivalled only by Mordercai. She levels up the fastest ingame(From personal experience.) You will want to work on the assassin skill tree, I suggest maxing out: Silent resolve(You will become very durable after exiting phasewalk.) Hit and Run(increases Your melee damage and the duration of phasewalk.) Now comes another choice. Depending on how much You use and enjoy phasewalk, You can go for the blackout skill, where killing an enemy will cut 1.2 seconds off the cooldown time(More time is removed at higher skill level on this ability.) Or go for high velocity, which increases bullet damage and bullet speed, but as Lilith You'll be using SMG's and elemental weapons a lot anyway, so damage over time and bullet speed arent much of an issue, its still useful though. And finally the most damaging skill of the tree: Phase strike, which puts an additional 160%(% increase per skill level) damage onto a melee attack during phasewalk, essentially allowing You to kill anything the same level as You or below if You have followed this character build in one hit. If You have extra points put them into Diva and Striking for more endurance. Co-Op play: Nobody likes it if You get downed a lot(You probably wont get kicked, but anyone who dares to help You up is at massive risk of death themsevles) so focus a lot on the controller tree, there is one skill in her entire class that helps the whole team, but its in the elemental tree which is the most backup-is tree for additional help to You. Max out: Diva(Your shields will get much bigger than They were when You got them.) Inner glow(Gives You health regen while phasewalking.) Hard to get(Phasewalk cooldown reduced) or Girl power(Shield buff per enemy killed.) The last skill is not that useful, practically a weaker version of the same ability is availible as one of the two starting skills in this tree, if You want to then get it, but Your leftover points are better left for the elemental tree. Max out spark and radiance, They will help do mor damage, both through bullets and simply by moving in phasewalk. Normally I'd suggest intuition as it helps the team the most, but venom does extra damage, and thats what Lilith needs to do, corrosive damage is great for damage over time. Then pheonix, which is rather useful, there if no way You can max this out too before level 50, based on this build, but it is fun and useful, killing an enemy sets Lilith ablaze, basically, You can kill someone and then just run around without shooting, running by enemies to set them on fire, You take no damage from Your own fire. The stronger this skill is the more damage the flames do. Lilith Tips and Tricks: Lilith moves faster than the other character based on some of her skills, besides Roland's Medic tree Lilith is an ideal run'n gunner, and a good person to have for reviving allies, as she has the smallest model and therefore is the hardest to hit. That is another reason she is an ideal partner with Brick, as she can very easily hide behind him to revive him while he is down. As Lilith, stay on the move, she is still killable, and based on the Co-Op build moving around deals extra damage, so pump those legs. Lilith also has a sniper-related skill, if You have Mordecai on Your team, You may choose to snipe with him, if Mordecai is not part of the game, the skill is good to be able to sort of take his place, standing back and killing an enemy to start the fight then switching to a better mid-range weapon is a good stratagy for Lilith. Based on the Co-Op build, Lilith can pretty much stay in phasewalk for ages, and keep going in just moments after exitting, this makes her ideal for support combat as she can survive a very long time and the radiance skill will be useful for getting rid of enemies shields by phasewalking past them. Mordecai:The Hunter. This was my first and is my most preferred class, I prefer to hang back and snipe, which is what Mordecai is made to do. Mordecai is by far the most fragile, but does a lot of damage based on his use of snipers and revolvers. His ability will call his pet Bloodwing, a large bird that does a lot of damage, and I mean a lot. Mordecai is also well suited to eridian weapons, as Their huge lack of accuracy is mostly averted by Mordecai's skills. All around build: Mordecai deals the hits no matter what, and like Lilith, should always be involved, but in solo play, Mordecai can really stand on his own. You will find Yourself being a mid-range fighter as opposed to a true sniper in solo play, my prefered(And if I do say, pro) build for Mordecai reflects this nicely. I found myself paying most of my attention to the rogue tree, which focuses on survival and dealing damage via bloodwing, this tree is ideal on or off-line, as Mordecai does not provide much in the way of team bonuses as opposed to Roland, but Mordecai makes up for it in damage. You'll want to go for: Swift strike(Increases Bloodwing's damage and speed.) Out for Blood(You receive health based on how much damage is dealt by Bloodwing, the health is gained upon Bloodwing's return.) Aerial Impact or Ransack are good choices, Aerial Impact helps online the most, but if You want lots of loot, go for Ransack. And finally Bird of prey, which makes Bloodwing capable of hitting more targets(Up to 5 or 6, more based on class mods.) Leftovers should be given to the first two skills in the sniper tree and some should be given to the gunslinger tree, the extra critical damage will help a lot as a sniper. Mordecai tips and tricks: Mordecai is very accurate, which is a massive advantage over the others who must build up accuracy as They go. Mordecai, like Lilith, should stay on the move, but not for combat purposes, Mordecai is best for sneaking around, Liliths phasewalk will alert enemies, even though she cannot be caught afterwards, the team will have to hold out, as Mordecai, You can slink around the outside of and area, enemies wont attack You if They dont know You are there. Mordecai is always a good choice if You want to help the team a lot via damage as opposed to via support, Mordecai can deal over 1000 damage per shot at around level 35, a level 50 Mordecai thats gets a critical could get around 2500. Mordecai is the most harcore choice, the game is more difficult in solo for him, as he is fragile, he also levels up rather slowly. Bloodwing can, based on Your skills and class mods, be used a second after it returns to You, effectively making Bloodwing deal most of Your damage, and making Mordecai just slightly more overpowered by Lilith towards the endgame. Dont worry, if something seems to far away to get a headshot, just shoot at it anyway, if its far away enough, the bullet will do slightly more damage based on built up speed, in this game, sniping doesn't mean miss a shot and its game over, a bullet to the chest is just as effective as a knife through the brain in Borderlands. ---------------------------------------------------------- Weaponry: First of all I will tell how to identify a weapon, while looking upon it from up close will give its brand name and stats, You can try to figure ut its maker from afar by color coding of the weapon texture. Dahl:Dahl weapons are green. S&S Munitions: These guys make golden and black guns. Hyperion:They make red and black/white weapons. Jakobs:Generally brown in colour. Maliwan:Bright blue with glowing colours based on its elemental properties. Tediore:Most of Their weapons are grey and black. Atlas:Their weapons are normally a very polished pearl colour. Eridian:These weapons are identified best by Their shape, They are very strange, smooth weapons, similer in colour to Atlas, however These guns are very alien-tech and have purple energy pulsing inside of them. Now for Weapon brands and Their best weapon types. Dahl:Dahl are very good for close range combat, You will find plenty of shotguns by Dahl, They are one of few brands to have a unique scope, though it is a rare find to have the scope. S&S: They focus on repeater pistols and snipers, They use a red skull scope. Hyperion:Hyperion make all kinds of weapons and are considered the best weapons for most of the early and endgame. Jakobs:Jakobs make revolvers and snipers, They are very powerful, remember, if it took more than one shot, You weren't using a Jakobs. Maliwan:Maliwan make elemental weapons, these are mostly SMG's. Tediore are easily considered an everymans weapon, They aren't bad, but not really good, They make all types of weapons. Atlas:Atlas weapons are very rare and are normally boss drops, They make assult rifles and sniper rifles, You can find some others, but a lot of Atlas weapons are legendary and therefore very rare. Eridian:Eridan basically make the hyper-weapons of the game, They are alien weapons that are as rare as Atlas weapons, the most common is the eridian cannon, which launches an explosive, slow moving ball of purple energy. The third DLC adds additional eridian weapons, bringing the total up to 7-10. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Obtainable objects: Borderlands is a game all about loot....and shooting things for that loot. And normally the loot helps You shoot things for more loot, You get the idea. Early in the game, every weapon, or object You come across will have a white marker above it, You will also come across the odd green marker, which means it is an uncommon drop. The next level up is Blue, You will first encounter these are level 5-6, and They will become more common from 10 up. Blue is Rare, and next up is Purple, some call it elite ranking, and others would call it super rare, either way, if You can get Your hands on something of purple ranking, go for it, its all good. Finally There is Orange, the legendary rank, You dont find many of these outside of later game red chests and boss drops, but if You can get one, do get it, They are the rarest for a reason. If You are very lucky, however, and do not have any of the DLC, You may find one of 3 hyper-rare Pearlescant weapons, I belive the selection consists of a shotgun, sniper and revolver, I have obtained the shotgun(Hydra) and sniper(Cyclops) on one class or another, but have not come across the revolver. These weapons are also marked white, which has caused much confusion in the past. If You do indeed have the DLC(The third one) The pearlescant weapons get given an actual colour code, cyan, or bright blue, still called pearlescant, new objects such as Pearl shields and artifacts can also be obtained. An easy way to figure out how good something is is to look at it in Your inventory, the items are stacked by level of rarity, white at the bottom, green above, then blue, purple, orange and white/Cyan. That said, I have come across a fair amount of basic white weapons that easily outdo some of my legendary equipment, a hyperion blast SMG can surprisingly do better at killing a boss such as Sledge than a carnage shotgun, which shoots rockets. There are so many variations of loot that there are no complete guides on the internet, You could have two of the same gun with exactly the same stats but They may have different scopes, for example. ------------------------------------------Part 3 to be added at a later date------------------------------------- Edited by Arkadom, Aug 27 2012, 02:07 PM.

I just brought this game yesterday. Pretty good so far. I am glad you have this mini-guide up. I just hit level ten maybe an hour ago. I'm hoping I can get some people who want to do co-op instead of just dueling. I'm on the PS3. Anyway I won't bother getting the second game until I beat the first. I have the GOTY edition so I have all the DLC. |
