TORRANCE - A man who stole a piece of pizza last summer has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, sparking renewed debate over the state's tough "three strikes" sentencing law.

Jerry Dewayne Williams, 27, of Los Angeles was convicted of felony petty theft in January for taking a slice of pepperoni pizza from a group of children, ages 7 to 14, eating at Adam's Pizza on the Redondo Beach pier on July 30.

Superior Court Judge Donald Pitts imposed the stiff sentence on Williams, who had four previous felony convictions, after rejecting his attorney's argument that the punishment did not fit the crime.

"Mr. Williams will be facing the same sentence as if he'd raped a woman, molested a child or done a carjacking because the statute does not draw distinctions," said Arnold Lester, Williams' public defender.

It's pretty disturbing to know that the "Three Strike Law" can have this kind of effect. Not getting into the ridiculous notion that petty thief can be considered a felony. The crime doesn't fit the time, regardless of this man's past history he doesn't deserve this harsh punishment. Which in the end costs the state far more money then a lighter punishment.

its supposed to deter idiots who want to live off the system, but unfortunately they dont talk about the REAL repeat offenders who commit major crimes on a daily.

Stealing pizza from kids is stupid, but not life worthy at all. Outta control.

The gun that won that old Wild West

yeah, that's completely crazy, but not surprising seeing how screwed up everything is. Reminds me when me and my friends ordered a pizza hut pizza and we stole the pizza from the guy when he got to our house. Damn...

The three strikes rule is quite idiotic when applied to situations like this.

Why oh why would they put a person in jail for life for something as petty as stealing a slice of pizza, going into a hospital drawer(Saw this on a prison show on MSNBC) or anything else.

I have always imagined that a judge has the ability to overrule a 'three strike' situation if the punishment didn't fit the crime...aka life for a slice.

Of pizza.

How is this news. Published in 1995? Come on guys..

Either way it seems to break the 8th amendment and probably doesn't matter much if at all anymore.

Also, found this... Senate is already trying to reform that law:

Quote:

Update 10:57 a.m. In a surprise outcome, the Assembly has passed AB 327, Tom Amminao's Three-Strikes reform bill. It now moves to the Senate.

The bill would put a modification of the current Three-Strikes Law on the Nov 2014 ballot, the only way it can be changed since the original law was passed by initiative in 1994. Supporters of a similar reform measure are currently gathering signatures for a Nov 2012 initiative.

Here's what the bill would do, from the Assembly's Public Safety Committee:

SUMMARY: Amends the "Three Strikes" Law, subject to voter approval, to require that the current conviction be a "serious" or "violent" felony in order to subject a defendant to an enhanced sentence under the 25-years-to-life (third strike) provisions. Specifically, this bill :

1)Requires the current conviction to be a serious or violent felony in order for the third-strike (25-years-to-life term) provisions of the Three Strikes Law to apply.

2)States that this bill affects an initiative statute and shall only become effective when submitted to, and approved by, the voters of California.

I feel as if this topic does not need to be closed, but instead revised, perhaps update on how the case ended, and perhaps people can do a little research and see how the laws have changed, or how it has been applied over the years up until now. I will change the title to perhaps make it more suitable for discussion. Weather it belongs in the Deep Discussion is yet to be seen

The laws arent on a federal level, they are on a state level. it cant just be changed, only a few states even implement this law in this fashion, pretty much the west coast and some even harsher down south.

This IS an old story, i already knew that, but it still rings true to this day. Prison is a booming industry.

Novacane for the pain

What a brilliant use of taxpayers money, lock a guy up for 25 because he stole a slice of pizza <_<

It is an old story (incidentally, I saw this another forum's news section today as well) but it still shows how ridiculous that current law is/can be. It needs refining obviously, the third offence should still be of a serious enough nature for the full 25 years or maybe just add onto the sentence in a proportionate manner rather than just a set time.

I wonder how many of use are members there and don't even realize who else is there? Ha!

I think if they payed their debt to society then they're done. If I commited a crime 5-15 years ago and served my time that's that. I don't think they should be like "oh you did 2 petty crimes already so instead of charging you with another petty crime we are putting you away for 25".

I'm just adding to this.

That would of been ten times better if that guy was a good public speaker. Every sarcastic remark and joke he threw out there was overshadowed by his poor speaking ability.
