The world of manga

I may not deserve to live, but I will protect those in my reach with my reverse blade!

Every manga is graded on how successful it does in Japan. From time to time you get a manga that is exceptionally successful every where in the world like Naruto and DBZ.

Then you have others that are particually successful in certain parts of the world. Bleach in America and One Piece in Japan are the brightest examples.

Why is this? Why was the animated series Bleach nominated for best animated series in America at the end of 2011, yet a few months later it lost it's time slot to a spin off Naruto gag anime?

It all has to do with Japan. When you have an anime/manga, especially with a theme that grabs an audience it's success in a specified area is driven with it's relative comparison to what came before it. People make the assumption that Bleach lost it's time slot to Naruto due to Naruto simply being better than Bleach.

The reality however, is that the sword/shinigami theme is wore out in Japan. There are countless themes that are overused in manga, yet can find success due to other audiences which aren't 'tired' of seeing the same ol', same ol' because they haven't seen it much.

When you think of Bleach's theme in America media history what comes to mind? Not much. When you do that in relative comparison to Japans, what comes up? Countless others.

I know I'm rambling, but I'm counting on good responces and drifting responces to make this thread interesting. So, if you have anything to say go for it. I'll try to respond and maybe we can reach some conclusions on the manga industry together.

I heard that Bleach was only cut because they couldn't keep animating filler.

This is of course because the anime was catching up to the manga, and that's apparently a big no no.

Edit: It should be worth noting that when Kubo was asked about the Bleach anime being cut, he simply replied ''Listen to what Ichigo said at the end.''

Ichigo says: See ya later!

I have no doubt that Bleach'll be back one day.

It's true that Bleach had extreme amounts of filler, but it's popularity also just wasn't on par in Japan with other titles.

Also, if they continue Bleach down the line they'll have to completely reboot it filler free for a lot of people to watch. Getting voice actors on contract again after a cancelation isn't easy work I would imagine, and no one wants different voice actors for the sub or dub.

If I remember correctly, the first season of the Bleach anime doesn't have filler. I might be wrong on that.

But Bleach as a manga was actually the first manga to have two consecutive color pages in Shonen Jump. It's popularity was big, and now just waning a bit.

I didn't know that. Are you referring to Shounen Jump or Shounen Jump America through Viz? I don't think they both use the same colored pages.

I'm pretty sure it was Shounen Jump (through Japan) although I guess it could be either.

He doesn't really elaborate on the subject. It's in one of the tankbon's first pages where he talks about his life experiences.
