It wouldn't be CSS at all afaik? You'd need some form of regex which calls the script only upon the exact use of your name and/or the quote function? :s Only way I could think of this would possibly be through a user account which acts as a bot, I don't believe we have any access to the system message function, unless you mean an email notification? - it would also need its own database to be able to allow members to opt in and out, which would need to be held offsite (we don access ZB dbs) and as such secure communication between them.
I think it would be an extremely complex feature and quite probably (would take me months lol) above my skill set - especially considering my horrendous regex abilities :s
If anyone has any better ideas about how to do this though i'd be more than happy to look into it for you.
You're right, if you have the forum act as a catalyst then it will be trying to grab way too much information/data at once for a board of this size. Creating one wouldn't be difficult but maintaining it would be over-kill. Anyway as for better ideas, just take a free one from the interwebs that can achieve a solution without creating a problem: http://resources.zetaboards.com/topic/5150854/1/The idea behind this is to not overload the time response of things like personal messages but to create its own feature that runs as a script (or even a floating script if you wanted to make it that way).
Except that is just replies to your topic - something different to what OP was talking about? To be able to know when someone quotes one of your posts would be much harder to track imo.

No, I don't mean by e-mail notification.
Then if we were to look at it this way then the bot would have to send people daily notifications perhaps Otherwise it could end up spamming too much!
I'll ask my friend when he gets back from holiday how hard it would be and see if I can trial it on a test board.
@-MS- What sort of Java?

I could try and ask a few people about it and see what they say, if it's any help.

I asked on the resource forum and the request was closed with this response:

This request was deemed impractical by our code team. This could mean that the feature you have requested is impossible to write, requires PHP and/or hosting, or requires too many AJAX requests. If you have any questions about why this request is not practical, feel free to contact a member of the code team.
http://resources.zetaboards.com/topic/5153416/1/
So quote notifications are not possible unless you can find an existing code written by someone that we can use.

That makes no sense. I might say they were right if we were going to create an infinite loop of requests every (1) second in the script, but updating in real time wasn't realistic to begin with.
My guess is they're afraid they will be fixing boards where members are continually abusing the function.

Would you be willing to give it a go then Cal?
It seems like a difficult project to undertake, you would be tracking when someone was quoted and then having a PM sent to that user. If you could do it by editing the files within the forum then it would be a simpler project but ZetaBoards doesn't give that.
I'm not sure if anyone would be willing to make it for free.

By 'impractical' they meant what they said The way I was thinking of it was through the use of PHP and would have to be hosted off-site. Which fits their definition of impractical.
If you want to give it a go you are more than welcome to

Can I have a custom title if I do (and it works of course) ?
This would be about a million times simpler if we just had DB/Root access. Is it a one time cost for it or a monthly rate Rogue?
Just a huge difference between editing a few posts and notifications tables and hosting off-site through PHP, even though I'm willing to try it out.

They don't offer DB/Root access.

I did tell you that lol
If you want to write up the code I could host it for you. My PHP skills are a little rusty and I dont have too much free time right now so you might be able to try quicker than me

Well that's a rarity.
If the coder's can't figure it out, how can we? It's not that they can't figure it out, it's that the time spent making it might be more than what it's worth, considering they do the coding for free and as a hobby, they could fill more requests in the time it might take to do that one request.

I'd imagine it's more it would require hosting and couldn't easily be built into the forum itself. I mean, I know in theory how to do it It's just the time it would take probably isn't worth the result.

Yea, I've amazingly underestimated this little project.
The closest thing I could even find to work from was this monster (phpBB):
http://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/who_quoted_me/
It's not even worth downloading. Tim you said it would probably take you 2 months, I say it would take me 6 so the only options we have it to hire a professional for 30-50 USD per hour or waste our lives for forever with trial and error. I, personally agree now it's just not worth the time or money.
If you do decide to undertake it as a project though Tim, I'd be more than willing to help, but I just won't be able to do something of this caliber realistically by myself.
