Okay, I posted my reviews of Splinter Cell 1-3 the other day and said I'd have the review of DA and Co up yesterday, my plans changed but here it comes now!

---------------------------------

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent
XBOX, PS2, PSP(Essentials), XBOX360, PS3, PC.

The Basics:

Probably the best game before the game engine got changed, Double Agent had some interesting features including a morality, known as a trust, system, where either the good(NSA) or bad(JBA) bar would decrease upon certain success of failure for either team.

It also brings to the table an improved graphic and combat system and good, fun stealth action that is enjoyable.

The Plot:
The game has 3 main training missions two of which are selectable from the campaign menu.

The first two are run at the NSA base, where You play as Sam before the main plot begins in the training simulator, You have multiple ways to tackle the second one but they mainly focus on teaching You the game.

The game begins with a two-man job infiltrating a building in Iceland with a rookie agent who manages to get himself killed half way through the mission by deciding to charge through the front door.

Sam must work in darkness to avoid the crew and deactivate a rocket, before escaping its blast radius later.

When Sam returns to his helicopter, Irving Lambert informs him that his daughter had been killed, which leads Sam into a bad state for many weeks, before finally taking a mission to infiltrate the JBA, John Brown's Army, and take it down from the inside.

The game has multiple endings based on Your trust with the two factions.

The gameplay:

Remaining largely the same, the stealth system is now more realistic in that shadows are not solid and dont just start, they fade in and out, and You will occasionally have to hide in the enviroment, not just in the shadows.

This game has some minigames in it that are fun at first but begin to drag after You have to crack 3 safes in one level.

This game also has some dramatic set pieces, some of which You can simply avoid, such as in the second level where there is a massive fight in the cafeteria, You can get involved or slink past.

Direct and group combat is still not encouraged as You will be overwhelmed quickly, and even Your own assult rifle will not fare You very well if You get stuck with more than two opponents.

The Multiplayer:

The Spies vs Mercenaries gametype is back and better than ever.....Though spies will probably be killed quickly if They expect to walk straight in.
The gameplay has been refined, Mercenaries are now more brutal and dealy while Spies must really try to evade the Mercenaries, as all They have is a hacking machine which is useless besides deactivating lights and the main objective, hacking terminals.

Spies are very fast and agile, the RB/R1 button will activate escape moves when prompted, which are moves You cannot perform otherwise, They often are useful for avoid Merc's and for escaping them, the three ones You will likely come across are a dive roll out a window(Or a tuck jump if the glass is somehow still there,) a slide into a small gap, or a flip upward into a flase ceiling.

Mercenaries however can still hunt the spies in Their vents and dark spaces, because They have detonating recon drones, controlled by the player, but spies can quickly identify and avoid them because of Their yellow glow.

This game also has a progression system, unlocking video's, documents and skins as You go, however, more maps are unlocked by playing a certain number of matches.

You start out with 3 maps, then unlock 3 more, then the last 2, unless You get the DLC.

There are also challenges, which are pretty much CO-Op tutorials, until the third mission.

While most missions dont require a second or third spy to help You, the double agent ones are vs matches and You need at least one more person for that, though the missions are very difficult, so help is recommended.

The DLC:

This game only has a single DLC, but its free and small in size so its a fair pickup.

It unlocks a new character, 2 new maps, 8 new challenges(I belive.) and some more unlockables.

It unlocks the Spy Girl character, with 3 of her own skins, though its pretty much just a reskin of the spy.

The Kinshasa and Secret base maps, two of which are awesome, and Secret Base is very nice to look at from inside the skylight or the landing pad.

The Issues:

This game, like its older brothers, can be a bit slow and drawn out, but it has so many good parts that the bad just doesent matter.
Oh...
But You cant skip very many cutscenes.
Also, the loading screens can sometimes glitch and slow down, a lot.

The Verdict: The best of the originals, Double Agent is a worthy buy, pretty cheap, and has free DLC, the multiplayer is still active and the gameplay is fun, likely the most popular Splinter Cell among many fans, Double Agent sets a high standard that Conviction only just equalled.

------------------------------------

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction
For XBOX 360, PS3, PC

The Basics:

This is where Splinter Cell started to change.

This time around, action and gunplay is very important, and stealth is optional, though still the best approach for the later levels(Being attacked by a chopper? You can just run up and shoot it with Your 5-7 bro :P.)

Alot of the controls and mechanics have changed, this game has a MUCH smaller selection of gadgets, limiting You to, exactly:
EMP grenade
Portable EMP
Frag grenade
Wall Mine
Sticky Camera
Proximity mine
Flashbang.

The Plot:

The game begins a little while after Double Agent(You can tell, as Sam has his hair back! :D) He is hunting the killer of his daughter in Malta.

The game is narrated by a new character, Sam's friend from the gulf war Victor Coste, the gulf war is covered early in the game, just after the third mission, in the gulf mission, You play as Vic and have little ways to be stealthy(Which is why They gave You a nice AK-47 to play with.)

Sam is contacted by Anna Grimsdottir, saying she knows how he can get at the killer of his daughter.

Sam is, however, directed into a market to avoid being assassinated, which introduces the new and improved cover system and the sort-of return of the swat turn, now replaced by dashing from cover to cover.

Gunplay is improved, and You can now tell if a bullet will line up or not, but its still a good idea to stay low and now move while aiming.

He reaches the leader of his attack, and intoduces the awesome new interrogation feature, where upon using the interrogate command around certain objects They will be used in the beating....Such as a dirty, recently used urinal.....

As time passes and Sam is captured, Grim reveals that Sam's daughter, Serah, is still alive, having been told that the other was dead, Sam and Serah were kept apart.

The main plot of the game centers around reuniting with Serah while bringing down the corrupt third Echelon.
In the last two missions of the game, however, You take a trip to the whitehouse to save the president, and a little something from Double Agent comes back.
You are given the choice of executing the main who ruined Your life or letting him live.

The Gameplay:

This time around the game is much more focused on combat and creative execution, introducing a new mark and execute feature after a hand to hand kill.

As a rogue agent You no longer need to worry about casualties, You can go in and clear out an entire level if You want, risk free of failure via rules.

The ability to hide bodies and many of Sam's spy maneuvers from the previous games are gone, replaced by the cover system and new enviromental and stealth kills, such as dropping from above, pulling an enemy into the dark and killing them, and many other things.
You can, as recently mentioned, use the enviroment too, shoot a car enough, it explodes, smash a person into a window, it breaks, shoot a light off its hinge(Only a few of those though :/ more in CO-OP.) And it will fall and crush anyone beneath it.

The weapon selection has now grown, and You can customize, upgrade and select Your weapons, a pistol and a main firearm, such as assult rifles, shotguns, SMG's or even a sniper rifle.

The Co-Op:

The spies vs Mercs gameplay is gone(But set to return in Blacklist :D,) instead replaced by an equally enjoyable 2-man campaign, two spies, one american, one russian, there are 4 missions (One of which has a no casualty rule for half of it...) To play, culminating in an incredibly difficult standoff and an awesome final battle.

Agent's One and Two are not present as They were in Chaos theory or Essentials(Handheld version of Double Agent,) instead replaced by Archer and Kestrel.

The gameplay is about the same besides more interrogations, fewer setpieces and a lot of Co-operative actions.

There are also some different gametypes, Hunter, a more action packed version of story mode with more maps and no story or narrative, the aim is to eliminate all enemies without causing an alert(Which causes tons more soldiers to arrive.)

Last stand, a defense gametype where You defend a generator, it's a bit boring and generic but can be fun sometimes.

(These two game modes can be played solo in deniable ops ^.)

And finally, Face-Off, a fun and interesting play on the hunter gametype where You must kill as many enemies as possible while hunting and avoiding the other player.

There is some level of character customization too, outside of campaign You can change Your spy suits to disguises, casual clothes or hardcore spywear.
You can change the costumes feature and camoflague with challange points earned through single player and Co-Op campaign.

The special edition had some additional costumes and weapons, and an extra gadget, but as of late 2011 it can all be accessed from the main menu and downloaded to Your weapons cache of closet for free.

The DLC:

Denialbe Ops:Insurgency introduces 4 new maps to play in Hunter, Last stand and Face-off(And are playable solo in hunter and last stand.)

The maps are greatly different to the main maps and are a lot of fun, but thats about it from what I've done with the DLC.

The issues:

Many fans were turned away by the reduction of stealth but They got a lot of new customers too, This games online is fairly active, but the low player count doesent help much.

The verdict:

A lot of fun and probably the most intense game in the series so far, the graphics are great and the gameplay is slick and fun.

I recommend that if stealth isent Your thing at least give this a go, its good, cheap and a lot of fun online, especially with a friend and a mic each.
