I have recently got back into Splinter Cell, a 3rd person stealth series, and im buzzing for the next installment, blacklist. So, in my anticipation I decided I'll review the entire series from start to finish. Lets start at the beginning. --------------------------------------------------- Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Platform:PS2, XBOX The Basics: Splinter Cell is what it sounds like, mysterious. In this game, You play as Sam Fisher, and You are going through Your Splinter Cell training. You are guided by Anna 'Grim' Grimsdottir, Your field operative, and Irving Lambert, Your superior. The Plot: The game begins in Sam's training, this only takes up the first mission and does a good job of tutoring You on the controls and how to play. You are then sent out on Your first field assignment. I wont spoil much of the story, as it is a massive part of the game, but basically, there is a lot of deception, explosions and twists. The Gameplay: The gameplay is solid and slow, this is not a game where You can succeed by charging in with Your five-seven pistol and slaughter everyone effortlessly, this is a game where a mistake, or one soldier, can put You down quickly. Your stealth level is registered on Your suit and a bar in the bottom-right of the screen that has 3 sections. Your suits HUD will be green if You are hidden and turn yellow if You are at risk of detection. Your weaponry should be greatly conserved as the only silenced weapon You have is Your pistol, and for a spy, Sam cant aim too well. Combat is encouraged to be done one at a time or avoided completely, with many missions not allowing You to use lethal force, its best for You to get behind somebody and either use them as a human shield and knock them out or non-lethally K.O them. There is a better way of dealing with situations though, but requires pace and skill, You can distract an enemy by shooting a wall, this will cause them to investigate, move quickly and avoid them to proceed. The issues: While it doesent bother me much, even in the HD trilogy, the graphics arent the best, and the darkness can be very confusing, even with Your night vision goggles on. There are the occasional glitches but nothing too advanced, but for some people who are more used to other types of games, they may lose Their patience and wind up dying quickly. The Verdict: Splinter Cell is a solid game with a good story and a lot of stealth, but some more action-based gamers will likely be turned away by the amount of waiting involved, as some times You may spend up to 3 minutes waiting for a guard to walk away from his fellow man and into the darkness. ------------------------------------------------- Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tommorow PS2, XBOX, GameCube. The Basics: Alot of things are the same second time around, the biggest changes being multiplayer and some additional spy maneuvers, and a buffed up difficulty. The plot: This time around You get no training, You are thrown straight into the field. You begin at a dock, heavily guarded, as You make Your way to the village You will get a tutorial on how to play, firstly how to jump, then how to climb, use a zipline, and how to hang down from a pole and shoot. Your mission is to infiltrate the village without causing any casualties, and extract information...If only You could be so lucky. A decent half an hour through the mission the main antagonist will be introduced, yes, half an hour, of about 50 minutes... For the first mission. Belive me, it gets harder. The gameplay: Pretty much everything is the same, there are still no-casualty missions, still very difficult stealth and still very long waiting periods, but its all good. Pandora tomorrow introduces some new mechanics such as the swat turn, which You will likely never use except for in the first mission, and the half split jump, which may happen automatically when attempting the split jump. In this split jump You can draw Your weapon and shoot, unlike its complete counterpart. This game introduces some new gadgets too, which are alot of fun when used right, especially to lead the guards away. There are some set pieces in the game that may annoy people though, the first level includes a segment where You need to stay in the middle of a searchlight to avoid a guard using night vision goggles, its smart, but often glitchy and frustrating. The difficulty grows with each level, as it should, but it gets very annoying in the second level where You start getting flashlight guards, camera's and fully illuminated rooms. The guards have super hearing this time around, so even when crouched You should move as slow as possible, or They will hear You. The issues: While not as glitchy as its predecessor, and with improved graphics, it is more frustrating and wastes a bit of disc space on things You will never use, Im looking at You, SWAT turn. While its very minimal, it just feels like something better could have been there. Another very annoying thing is hiding bodies. Whenever You progress a certain distance from the last checkpoint, the game will sweep over and scan for bodies in illuminated area's, even if there are no guards around, if You just leave the body in the light its game over, and its very easy to forget. The Multiplayer: Pandora Tomorrow introduces multiplayer to the series, and is likely this games best feature. The basic premise is Spies vs Mercenaries, each with Their own gadgets, equipment and playstyle. Each team has a training levle that will teach You how to play each faction, the spies are third person and use stealth to reach terminals and deactivate them, while mercenaries use assult rifles, strength and special tracking equipment to find the spies and defend the terminals. While the gameplay is fun, the maps are varied and the multiplayer is a blast, unfortunately, Ubisoft shut down the online servers for this game a long time ago, though its possible to visit each map as either faction and have some fun with it. The Verdict: This game has some goods and bads, but its predecessor feels more enjoyable, the multiplayer was this games shining point, but it is anything but alive now. ----------------------------------------------------- Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory Playstation 2, XBOX, GameCube(I belive) The Basics: This game is the best of the original trilogy, with the most new and improved features, discarding the previous games unwanted ones, with the best graphics and least frustration, though some missions may begin to drag at the half way mark. The plot: I honestly havent gotten far into this game yet so know little about the plot, I've spent too much time playing around in the multiplayer. You return as Sam Fisher and have another mission to sink Your teeth into. The Gameplay: All the favorites return and more, the HUD remains the same, and know You can add a sweet combat knife and improved movement system to Your repetoire. There are fewer frustrating moments this time around and everything seems more fluid, and the combat is....Well....Theres combat! [insert smiley face.] Sam has also learned how to aim now, You will find Yourself getting headshots when You want them now, though Conviction outmatches all the others in aiming, this game started the climb. By this point, You can now tackle most levels however You like, though the pathways are pretty linear, the Guards are no longer superhuman and its possible to get through a level without triggering an alert now. The best thing? That frustrating body-in-the-light sensor is finally gone, and alert will only begin if an actual guard finds the body. Swat Turn and half-split jump are gone, the ability to shoot now put into the regular split jump, which You will find Yourself using a lot. The combat knife will often be automatically used in interrogation and melee kills, so You dont have to spend time preparing it, and it looks cool too. But the best thing about this game, like its predecessor? The Multiplayer: This game expands Pandora Tomorrow's multiplayer by adding a 2-player Co-Op campain as well as adding more PvP modes, bigger and better maps(And Pandora already had massive maps...) And more variety. While a lot has stayed the same, the best thing is this multiplayer is still online. Unfortunately, nobody plays PS2 online anymore, and the HD trilogy(The first 3 games) excludes multiplayer from Pandora and Chaos Theory, so no PSN either. The issues: Not many, the occasional glitch and some annoying parts, but otherwise.....What issues? The verdict: The best of the original trilogy by far, Chaos Theory brings everything it needed to and more, and it started the inspiration for Convictions best bits, this game may be the best of the Splinter Cell series thus far. --------------------------------------------- Tomorrow I will be posting the reviews of Double Agent and Conviction, which are my personal favorites, and in early 2013 I'll bring out the Blacklist review. |
