I may not deserve to live, but I will protect those in my reach with my reverse blade!

In 2004 Nintendo launched what would be the best selling family of handheld gaming devices ever. Nintendo owns the identity of selling consoles through rehashed 1st party characters and quick gimmicks that say "you must have me" to most potential customers. This system thrived mostly off the gimmick feature.

The original Nintendo DS was quickly followed by the DS Lite which was 2 ounces lighter and had a battery life of almost twice of the previous. After this the DSi hit the market having a front and rear facing camera as well as more online capabilities for 100 usd more than the Lite. After this they improved the battery life of the Dsi and called it the DSiXL which is larger than the DSi with a slightly better processor as well as superior batter life.

The most interesting DS however is the 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS is a dual screen handheld with 3d visuals without glasses, The 3DS is a slight improvement over the DSiXL plus 3d visual software which might be considered a gimmick. Nintendo made the best selling handheld family ever as I mentioned earlier. They started with an interesting gimmick, made some improvements, sold with some different colors, then added more gimmicks to continue the sell of the original dual screen console.

After a somewhat hot start for the 3DS Nintendo soon realized that it wasn't doing good anywhere in the gaming market except for Japan. It was such a big deal that Nintendo started selling the console for under it's value of production per unit. In 2011 Nintendo recorded it's worst financial year in 3 decades due mostly to this dual screen device capable of producing 3 dimension visuals. Nintendo won't start profiting from the 3DS until August of this year.

The dual screen handheld console family has had it's ups and downs. The few things we do know is that it's the best selling handheld family in history and is mainly responsible for Nintendo's worst financial year in decades. What does this mean for the handheld family, and what does it mean for Nintendo?

Nintendo will be launching it's next generation console later this year called the WiiU. Whatever may happen to or as a reaction to the dual screen family in the future will be overshadowed by the success or lack thereof of their new console.
