Is Anime just too expensive?

Novacane for the pain

I was thinking about this today as I was looking around to buy some stuff. I wanted to start with my Naruto Shippuden collection so went to buy the first DVD that was released, which contains the first 13 episodes. Put simply, it cost $50. In comparison, you can get episodes of an American sitcom (roughly 25 episodes) for about $30. That's a pretty big gap in price, especially when considering how much you're getting (btw, I chose an American sitcom because technically both are being imported from somewhere else and both are shown on television as well). I'm not sure what drives prices this high, if it's just because of import prices from governments or something then that obviously changes the outlook.

This also leads in to online piracy. Would this be reduced if Anime was more affordable? Is that part of the reason that people resort to watching shows online? Or would these same people do that anyway even if they could afford the content legally? Personally, I think it's important to support the shows you like and I do what I can but these high prices do not make it easy.

Yes!! I agree that Anime is expensive!! Especially in high street shops such as HMV. For example I seen sets which contains 13 episodes and they cost about £30... WHAT??? Then again if you buy Anime dvds online like at places like Amazon they tend to be a lot cheaper.

But thats why I dont usually buy Anime hardly anymore..

Wanna know what's worse? My show, Madoka Magica. I was gonna buy it on DVD anyway. DVD is the cheapest of its options. It's about $30 per volume. Each volume if 4 episodes, and only the first has a neat special feature. There are 3 volumes.

I spent about $100 on a 12 episode series. Yeah, it's friggin' expensive, and like I said... that's the cheapest of the options I had!

No you just need to do some searching. Places like Rightstuf (new sales every Thursday) and Amazon are great for purchasing anime.
Rightstuf also has some awesome holiday bundles (all of Yu Yu Hakusho on Blu-Ray for $65).

Never buy retail because it's always overpriced.

I get most of my boxsets for $20-$30.
Then again America probably has the cheapest anime in the world.

I bought my DVDs from Rightstuf. That was the official store for the series. Amazon was the same price. There was, and still is, no retail for this series. I repeat: it was the cheapest option I had.

At the moment I believe it is, I would love to have some blu-ray dvds of my favorite anime series(especially Naruto, FMA Brotherhood and Death Note).

But I doubt they would be within my price range.

Its still way too expensive for what you're getting. I mean, sure, if you wait a few years the price will go down, but why should you have to? Plus you've got to consider the position of others, do you know how difficult it is to get Region 2 Anime DVDs? Very damn difficult.

Yeah sometimes it depends on the company.

Bandai Gundam stuff is WAY overpriced.
Viz DVD's just suck.
Funimation probably has the cheapest stuff.

I remember buying Fusion Reborn, the 12th DBZ movie, for $20. It was 50 minutes long, with only a handful of trailers and some character bios as extras. That was saddening.

But I think that there's like an export tax or something that makes them so expensive. Maybe.

Really? When was that?

They currently have movie packs with 4-5 films for less than $20.
