I once gave a Kangaroo a heart-attack just by staring at it

So, I know this is an old game, but it's one I spent a long time as a kid trying to buy or borrow (having heard it compared with Ocarina of Time, which is easily my favourite game), with no luck of either. Last week, I decided to order it from Amazon. I'm a few hours into the game, and this review will (hopefull) be updated as I play the game for reasons that will be later stated. As of the first draft, I have spent roughly four and a half hours playing it, and have just obtained the second Aeon summon, Ifrit.

First Impressions:

My first impression of playing the game was excitement. Having only ever played handheld FF titles (Tactics A2, which I loved, and Grimoire of the Rift), I was looking forward to seeing what it'd be like on the console. I thought the cutscenes were well animated and designed - they have a really grainy look to them, which sounds bad but it works imo. I thought certain characters looked cool (Jecht, Khamari, and Auron) and some characters looked stupid (everybody else).

When I first began playing the game, I was immediately frustrated by the amount of cutscenes within it. Of the four hours I have played at least 40 minutes have been cutscenes that you cannot skip. What makes this even more annoying is that one cutscene would end, you would take 10 steps, and then another would begin, with the process repeating. Thankfully, this is slowing down as the game progresses. I also think that the voice acting isn't great, but that's just nitpicking. Tidus sounds like Barry Gibb decided he would like a stint in video game voicing and Auron sounds like a perverted trucker you see in some movies xD.

But, with all of that said, I can see the game was ahead of its time, despite being over 10 years old, the battle system is one we've seen many times over since the debut of the Final Fantasy series and, despite the linear gameplay, it's an interesting concept.

Storyline

I have thought, since I started playing, that the story was the game's strongest quality.

You play Tidus (or whatever you call him. I called him Mike) a young "Blitzball" star (similar to volleyball but with players completely submerged in water) who's father left 10 years prior to the start of the game. One day, during an important Blitzball match, your city, a futuristic metropolis called Zanarkand, is attacked by a collosal demon called "Sin". With the help of Auron - a father-figure in your life, I guessed, it has not been explained so far - you attempt to escape the city. However, at the last moment, Tidus is either caught or consumed by Sin and wakes up in the middle of nowhere.

Soon, Tidus discovers that he has been transported 1000 years into the future, where technology is scarce and a religion called Yevon unites all denizens of the land. Tidus encounters Wakka, a blitzball player on a hawaii-esque island and strike up an immediate friendship. Wakka serves, initially, to introduce Tidus to plot elements and the culture of the land during the early game. Tidus then encounters Yuna, a summoner - a kind of priest/priestess who travels the land healing and guiding people but can also summon monsters called Aeons to help them fight) and the two bond as their journey progresses.

I find Wakka to be quite an irritating character, as he is one of those characters where what they say is intended to be funny with no success. So far, my most used characters have been Tidus or Lulu (the black mage).

Gameplay
I think that, aside the annoying conversations the game won't let you skip that happen every 2 minutes, the game flows pretty well. Everything is explained to you, and it's easy to pick up without being so easy as to be boring.

Each character has a weapon slot and an armour slot. Different weapons and armour give different bonuses, buffs, and have varying amounts of empty slots that can, presumably, be upgraded at a later point in the game. As far as I can tell, they don't do additional damage.

Battles take place in a party as large as three, although members can be swapped out at any time. So far, the only thing I haven't enjoyed about the battle gameplay is that you can't fight with an Aeon on your team unless the Aeon is alone. Although, that's not so much a bad thing (it'd be overpowered), it's just because I want to screw things up with a massive flying monster on my team at the same time.

That's all for now, I'll update this again when I get further into the game ^_^

I agree with everything you said. I hate the character designs and the voice acting. I don't know why there is never an option to play it with the original Japanese voices. Even Lost Odysee had that and that game sucked. The cut scenes are the main reason why I don't want to play through it again. Come to think of it, I can't even remember what I actually liked about this game. All the games prior to 10 were bad ***** but since then it seems that they have been aimed at 12 year old Japanese girls. Thus all the elements that made Final Fantasy cool have been lost in favour of styled hair and nonsensical, philosophical bull*****.

I still play it from time to time. I've got everyone's best weapon, except for Khimari - I find the butterfly chasing mini game to get his crest/sigil (I can't remember which now) to be more frustrating than dodging 200 lightning bolts in a row to get Lulu's crest/sigil (again, can't remember which).

Oh, and I love playing the Blitzball minigame.

I loved this game even though I have not finished it. It is the main reason, along with Kingdom Hearts 1&2; that I will be purchasing another PS2.

The graphics were ahead of it's time in a way and I happened to like the cutscenes because I knew more funny or awesome details about the characters or the story was going to come.

Or an amazing boss battle.

Hehe, I'm still playing this game, want to complete it 100% but goddamn are the dark aeons brutal...

For the aeons, level Yuna up and they'll get stronger with her, I had issues midgame with them being weak but after a stint of endgame levelling they became ungodly powerful.

The cutscenes are a bit annoying, more so when you've played it already but then again they're there to sell the story, if you immerse yourself I think it's one of the best but I agree with the voice acting, it's pretty average. Considering it was FF's first voice acted game, not bad and it still holds out against the weaker RPG's nowadays.

I liked the combat system, simple but it works.

My first experience to the FF series and it isn't all that great. Actual would say it's boring I guess I'm not really into the layout of the game in general. I'll finish it though to see how it ends.

I have completed final fantasy X game,I must say it was a real hard struggle.those of you that hasn't reached that mount gagazet, strenghthen your character, that will be the third time you encounter seymour.my ability and item recomendation: hp-restoring magic/item,any magic/item that removes "Zombie",and others. Pack lots of zombie curing item/have an ability that cures zombie. YOU NEED LOTS OF IT. And a warning for internatonal version:later in the game, you find yourself an enemy of yevon.Do not enter temples,or meet dark aeons that deals very big damage 99999! ONE HIT KILL! Do not enter temples unless you have yojimbo.you will find yojimbo aeon in the calm lands cave.and you need lots of money.you need to hire him once.
