So basically all I did was smudge the background and soften the lines of Supergirl. Plus I added a border. I would have added text but didn't know how to place it on top of the image. GIMP has a lot of features which I have yet to play around with. It was tricky enough figuring out how to resize the original image to fit on the canvas. Yeah it sucks and I haven't done much to the original image but it's my first time and there's a lot of features I don't yet understand. :p

Are we getting another GFXer? :DD

You should keep practicing and hopefully you'll be able to make more complex works.

First of all congrats on getting into gfx, it can be addicting.

Great attempt for your first time, you've done really well not to overdo things like effects and although it's simple it is clean and smooth too look at.

My pointers would be
-Always save your finished signatures as an xcf and a PNG, PNG has better quality than JPG
-You have a bit of blur on your render, try to keep your render clean
-focus on flow, try to smudge in a specific directions
-To place text, open up the text tool (looks like two A's) click on the layer and type, you may have to adjust the text box to see all the text you've written.

Keep it up, you will improve in no time.

Yeah I went overboard with the smudge and couldn't correct it. Perhaps I could have made the whole image blurred and it would look better? Didn't help that two tutorials I looked at were useless.

This is pretty good for a first graphic and way better than my first graphic. I think once you learn how to use gimp more, you'll make much better pieces. I'd have to agree with everything that Light said. I'd also try looking at other graphics for some ideas.

Either way, I think you have something going for you. I can't wait to see what you'll make when you get better.

We all started somewhere. I remember my first graphic, made in Paint... yeah, enough said. Anyways, as a first piece you experimented with several options in the program, which is good. You made a border trying to match it to the background and smudged, which is a great start.

I would help out by writing some coherent tutorials, as I know some people write them and they are very difficult to follow. Unfortunately, I do not know how to use GIMP or what it allows you to do but I am sure its pretty limited. You should do a free trial of CS5 of CS6 (whatever one is out now) and go with that because that is the program that offers the most when it comes to graphics. I believe you can also download free trials over and over again.

Back to the image, it looks nice and nothing sticks out which I like. As Light and Pookie said, avoid blurring the render alot, especially if it is the focal, which it usually is. Also, I look forward to seeing you experimenting with text and such on the images

Good job, and hope to see more from you. Don't give up and keep trying, its the only way to succeed.
