Akira Toriyama Interview by Nirazaki Tihashiberi Super Otaku Magazine Issue #297 Toriyama-san has agreed to answer some questions for us today. Much thanks to Toriyama-san after the craze on the Majin Buu period. (Do note that this was not a cover story, and thus, short). Nirazaki: Many fans have given positive feedback over the Majin Buu period. The inclusion of fusion was an unexpected twist. What gave you the idea? Toriyama-san: Well in order to have a villain with so much strength, you need someone around that can rival him. Majin Buu is incredibly strong. Its not easy to create a character that can keep up. So I thought of making the characters fuse to create new characters without taking the focus off the main characters. Nirazaki: There have been many changes since the Saiya-jins came to earth. Do you ever think about the progress? Toriyama-san: Yes I do. Doragonboru has come a long way. They went from running at super speed to moving at the speed of light! (Laughs) Nirazaki: There was uproar over the rematch between Son Goku and Bejita. Were you planning this the entire time? Toriyama-san: (Laughs) It was more of a crowd pleaser. Son Gokuu and Bejita didnt have the opportunity to fight in the Seru period, and with a new saga to start with, it would not be hard to work in that kind of battle. Nirazaki: Youve been telling everyone how this is the end. Will Doragonboru really end after Majin Buu? Toriyama-san: Yes. Ive put so much time on Doragonboru I cant do much else. I never expected Doragonboru to be this long in the first place. I think its been concluded on a high note. After all, if I had my way, Id of ended the manga after the Freeza period! (Laughs) Nirazaki: You like to laugh about this a lot. Will parting with Doragonboru be difficult? Toriyama-san: On one side, Im relieved. On the other side, its like seeing a child move away. Nirazaki: I know that a lot of people want to hear more about fusion. With Bejitto now in the story, will he play that big of a role? And most of all, is he stronger than Gojīta himself? Toriyama-san: Well I dont know yet. Ive planned some things with Bejitto, but he wont be the focus of the entire saga. Youll see as things develop. As for their strength, Gojīta is a little bit stronger, but you wouldnt notice a difference. Still, Bejitto will always be the most skilled martial artist! (Smiles) Nirazaki: What does that last part mean? Toriyama-san: Youll find out. Nirazaki: Ill remember that! One last question. Toriyama-san: Make it good, you wont get a second chance! Kidding, Ill see you again. Nirazaki: Is this the end of Doragonboru forever? Toriyama-san: I dont want to shift the focus, so I have to keep certain things close to their roots. "The Fusion Dance is a short series of poses that are performed by two characters of equal power levels and roughly equal size. In the series, the result of a correctly performed Fusion Dance is a superior being whose power is multiplied severalfold over that of the individual fusees" "When one pair of Potara Earrings are worn by a single person they have no special properties. However, if two individuals each wear one earring on opposite ears, the true power of the artifacts is revealed. The earrings have the ability to fuse two people into a single entity, substantially enhancing the abilities of both individuals. The resulting fusion lasts forever, even if the fused being removes the earrings." |

If Vegito wasn't meant to be superior, why would Toriyama-san bring up the Potara fusion method, then? Sorry but it makes no sense, it goes against stataments in the manga. Vegito is meant to be stronger than Gogeta imo. |

And just by transforming into SSjin, he stomped Gohan-Boo easily. SSjin 3 Gogeta is just at Base Vegetto's level pushing it IMO. I just have him a bit above Ultimate Gohan. |

It's obviously fake. "Buu" is a dub name, in Japan he's called "Boo". |

Well, if this is real and Toriyama says Gogeta is stronger, then he is. |

Yeah, basically. It's fanmade. I'm just saying that arguing against the authors word is impossible. |

Agreed. It's sure be a shock, though, since most of the DBZ fanbase would be arguing whether or not Gogeta is equal to or weaker than Vegetto, not stronger than. |

Base Vegito has no feats to put him around Mystic Gohan's level. SSJ3 Gogeta is defenetly above Buuhan and even SSJ Vegito IMO. Base Vegito is much weaker than Buuhan and had to transform so Base Vegito is even weaker than Super Buu. He is at best barely SSJ2 Gotenks level IMO. |

Even if it was real. AT, although brilliant, forgot a lot of things, or he didn't look into them as closely as his fan base did. I can't remember off the top of my head, but I remember reading interviews with him where he said all matter of nonsense regarding character levels. AT was focusing on the story and plot, he never meant to dive as deeply as many of his fan base did into, amongst other things, power levels and pecking orders I know it sounds silly, but I would go by the manga over his words, because he isn't perfect, and could forget some things from time to time. Edit Don't quote me on this, but a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I clearly remember reading (back in Youtube debating days) an interview where AT was discussing Broly and he laughed and said he was the strongest character he has thought of. I remember it clearly because he didn't say Saiyajin, just character, outright. Now, it is VERY safe to say that he was either 1) Joking, 2) Just kinda forgot about the Boo saga onwards or 3) The trolls were right after all and Broly's power really is maximum. See where I'm getting at, don't take what he says literally, or at least give him the benefit of the doubt that he has better things to do then discuss DB for hours on end on forums all over the internet... Oh wait

Toriyama didn't even think of Broly... It was all Toei. |

Yeah....if Akira Toriyama says Gogeta is stronger than Vegetto, I'm not arguing against it. No one should. Unless it's some ridiculous statement like SSJ Goten > SSJ3 Goku, then we should believe him. Not blindly, of course, but he did create the manga, and has more credence than anyone. Edit: Yeah, all AT did was create/draw Broly, IIRC. He wasn't involved story wise at all. Same with all the other movies. Edited by GridZero, Jun 17 2012, 05:44 PM.
