This applies to Anime as well, but I put it in manga because people usually blame the mangaka for a series not being any good (as they should, that's who writes it). Anyway, can one series be objectively better than another? Really, isn't quality all in the eye of the beholder? For example, I often hear in arguments that One Piece is "objectively better than Naruto" because it has much better sales in Japan. Personally, I think that line of reasoning is wrong. Popular doesn't equal quality and just because something is popular doesn't make it good. That's not to say that One Piece is a bad series (even though I don't personally like it all that much) it's just that what one person thinks is good won't be shared by everyone and you can't say that something is bad objectively because those judgement are completely subjective things. Thoughts? Or is this just useless rambling?

You're one hundred percent right. I hate people who claim that something is better because more people like it, I find that not many of One Piece's characters are likable or relatable, whereas in Naruto there are plenty of character that can be understood, such as Hiruzen Sarutobi, Kushina Uzumaki or Itachi Uchiha, to me at least, They feel much more human. Again, its a personal opinion. |

No piece of art, including manga, can be objectively better than another. |

Art is something entirely subjective. What someone finds great can be entirely different than someone else but even if it wasn't something that's open to opinion, who cares what others think? Just enjoy what makes you happy. Life's too short to care what others think. |

I think you can definitely say that characters in some series are more developed or complex than in another series, but of course it partly comes down to personal preference/experience with regards to which characters you find more relateable. For example I think DBZ has less well developed characters than Naruto and Naruto has better storylines, but I prefer DBZ to Naruto. edit: I personally don't find the characters from Naruto relateable. I don't have a monster fox inside me resulting in everyone hating me and I don't have a brother who killed everyone I know. Those aren't too human really if you ask me compared to say, Usopp who is just a guy who wants to follow in his father's footsteps but isn't brave enough, or someone who spent his whole life hated/in hiding because his father was a criminal, or arcs about God/fearing God and holy lands and stuff like that, which is similar to conflicts still going on today.... Well for one thing its all based on perception. knowing this there is a reason for different genres in the field. different people like different style. all manga and anime represent a certain type of style(s) within a certain subculture. But within that subculture is many others. But objective or subjective, It always comes down to appreciation, and understanding. You do or you dont. In a nutshell. Thing is, whilst a lot of Manga nowadays have similar main themes, they all aim to do something different. It's like comparing Pokemon to CoD, they both aim to do different things and succeed to different degrees. Character Development, Plot, Fights, Art, Length of Manga, Sales and such are various factors and make it so that no manga is truly ''better'' than another. Like one of my friends hates Dragonball Z but loves Bleach. I'm not going to say he's wrong because he's got legitimate reasons why Bleach is better than DBZ in things like sales and popularity. As Ninja said, it's an issue of perception. |

I can see this from both sides. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what anyone else says, you like what you like. No one really has any right to tear down your opinion because it's an "opinion." However, I do sometimes find myself making two separate lists for what I would consider my favorite manga. On one side I have my personal favorites, or those manga that have a place in my heart/childhood and that I found the most enjoyable. The other list is made up of "quality" or how well it was written. Enjoyability also comes into play. For example, my first list would be comprised of things like Dragon Ball and Naruto, whereas the other list would include manga like Death Note, Bakuman, No Longer Human, etc. I just have to come up with some way of combining those lists. >.> So yeah. -_- |

No one manga can be better than another? I don't know. Have any of you ever read BERSERK? It has everything to it. It's perverse, horrifying, and dark as can be at times. Yet there are just as many moments that make you smile, laugh, even cry. It helps that the main character, Guts, is one of the most badass characters in all fiction, and he can swing his humongous sword as easily as you can use a kitchen knife. I none of you have read it, I suggest hunkering down for a few days in you room, turning off the lights, and blasting songs from the BERSERK anime ost while you read. It been around for 21 years, just like me. AS soon as I read it, I feel head over heels in love. I can promise that you might too. |

I do understand what You mean and at this point One Piece is something I enjoy, but I find the way the characters are handled outside of moments focused on them to break a lot of the connection I feel to the characters, whereas in Naruto though the situations are not very relatable, the feelings and way it effects the characters are somewhat metaphorically more relatable, for example Naruto, nothing is ever easy for him but its because everything has been so difficult for him that he just goes with it and keeps trying. Of course, at this point Sasuke is not as relatable because of the fact that he is pretty much insane, being angry or aggressive is normal but his plans of revenge are very over the top. One Piece is more human yet to me Naruto feels more right. At the end of the day though They are both great manga, so its wrong to think that They should share the character development and say that one is better because You like the characters more. |
