Why is Yamcha so lazy?

Yamcha is probably the second weakest Z Fighter, and in the Boo Saga, he said he quit fighting several years ago.

I understand that he was aging, but he could've at least entered a tournament or something and become ridiculously rich, right?

Yamcha > Any (normal) human on Earth ; so why didn't he? Did Toriyama just not care enough about Yamcha?

Lazy? The guy spent the first 30 or so years of his life constantly training, at least 4 of those years were training to save the world and about 9 of them were training for world martial arts tournaments. The guys hardly lazy, he just got bored of fighting after the Cell saga.

Very true. I guess Krillin got bored of it too. The only people that really kept training were Vegeta, and Tien. Probably for their own personal reasons.

I always though that Yamcha would rise up is some scene like Tien against Semi-perfect Cell. In Dragonball he was probably my second best character until AT made him loose every match. After he died i though that he and others will keap training and maybe even learn Kaio ken, but it seams that humans didnt had so much fans.

I seriously think this guy needs some motivation. I knw its filler, but there's some shots of him watchin Vegeta train in Capsule Corp's Spaceship, prior to the Android's appearance.

Yamcha observed Vegeta's deterimation, & got fired up.

Personally, Yamcha is my favorite no count. I like his spirit ball technique, but yeah I do wish he had some sort of glory scene.(Tien had like 3 of them) I know most people don't like yamcha, but I do and just wish he was more appreciated. He had so many fail moments, they even had him die to a siabaman. Im sure he could have taken all of them like he said, but he let himself be caught off guard. Also, his total ***** whooping handed by #20 was shameful.

He survived a hole in the chest. I think that makes him equal to Goku.

Yamcha is easily one of my favourite character in the series with his Wolf Fang Fist and Spirit Ball techniques being among my favourites in the series. With that said, there wasn't any point in the series where he was lazy. He just ran into the same problem that the other non-Saiyan fighters fell into...he wasn't Saiyan.

The only point in the series where I see him even slowing down his after his confrontation with Android 20 (as I'm sure that is when the difference really kicked in) and even then, I still see him training anyways (just not at the rate he trained to fight the Nappa and Vegeta or in preparations for the Androids arrivals) (which is what I see everyone minus Gohan doing anyways (as he had academics to focus on)).

In short, he wasn't lazy.

Yamcha actually became more determined as a fighter as the series went on. At the start of dbz he wasn't focused, he didn't know what he wanted, he was on a baseball team and all sorts of other things. But when the saiyans were coming to earth his desire to train became renewed and he became incredibly strong when you think about it. In the entirety of the original dragonball, peoples power levels topped at most 350. In preparation for the saiyans Yamcha went from a power level of like 200 to 1000. That's pretty amazing when you think about it. The same thing happened in the preparation for the androids. He wanted to train hard because he saw that Bulma liked Vegeta because of how hard he trained but when he couldn't handle the gravity training that really messed with his head. Yamcha was a great fighter, he just needed something to channel his energy to allow him to focus on training.

But didn't he have a paying job for a period of time? (in the anime)

I think only 1 or 2 other people can make that claim - neither of which are Goku or Vegeta.

I like Yamucha for the fact that he seems the most "normal" of all characters. It seems to me he has an actual life and does other stuff other than training 24/7, and why would he anyway? He has Goku and the Super Saiya-jins there to protect his planet and sort things out, when he couldn't really just depend on Goku (Saiya-jin Saga) he trained and did his best doing so.

Also, I assume he didn't try to compete in the other Budokais because he already had his life gained pretty much and didn't bother to go in and completely stomp everyone on the tournament.

It could also be he wanted to give the other competitors a chance, maybe he didn't want to make any of those fighters feel completely useless... maybe like someone we know? But that's just going too deep character-wise. :D

Why would anyone like Yamcha need to train anyway? The Saiyans are powerful enough to defeat any potential threat, and it's not like he or any of the other humans could ever become as strong as them or be of any major use in battle after the Cell saga

I think you hit it right on the nail with that one. This completely answers the question about Yamcha
