Manchester United legend and former Real Madrid player Ruud Van Nistelrooy has apparently retired from football at the age of 35. He has just helped the spanish side Malaga qualify for the UEFA Champions League but decided he's no longer fit to play at the maximum level.

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11667/7755993/Ruud-hangs-up-his-boots

It's a bit of a shock to me. Just a moment before stumbling on this article, I had read that Paul Scholes had just signed a one year contact extension for Manchester United (great news) and earlier today Gary Neville was announced to be a part of the England national team's coaching staff, but this makes me feel a little sad. It makes me realize how most of the players I love are literally on the verge of leaving their football playing days behind. It's doubtful that Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes will be playing after the next season so its a very sad time. Having lost the Premiership to Manchester City, it's evident that United could have used a striker this season of the calibur Van Nistelrooy provided the team just over six years ago. There doesn't seem to be many players of his quality around anymore. This man used to get a goal almost every game, and it didn't matter where he picked it up, the ball would somehow find its way into the net even if he had to scramble to get it in there. He was really committed to getting the goals and he is pretty much the last good - seriously good - striker Manchester United have ever had. Rooney could only wish he was as good as Ruud Van Nistelrooy or Eric Cantona.

Since I was only about 10 years old when he joined Manchester United, Van Nistelrooy sticks in my mind as one of the best players Manchester United have had, and he certainly played the best days of his career at the club, so I made this topic just to acknowledge how good a player he really was. It's sad to know he's quit, he was one of my most favourite footballers.

One of my first football memories is standing in the Stretford End and the crowd basically sang his name for the entire game (with a couple of minutes off to tease the opposition ;) ). He was a goal scoring machine and even when we weren't playing well, there was always that little voice in the back of my head saying "Don't worry, Ruud is playing." It's a real shame that we didn't win much when he played for us, he was around during a transitional phase and basically carried us for a couple of seasons. He did leave at the right time though, our system relied on him too much and we wouldn't have been able to evolve with him still there. None of that makes him less of a legend though.

Van Nistelrooy, Van Der Sar, Gary Neville, soon to be Scholes and Giggs, all the players I adored growing up are retiring :'( It sounds stupid, but when Sir Alex finally retires it'll probably signal a different stage of my life. It's crazy how much a sport can influence your life.

I agree with much of what you said except this, Wayne Rooney is a world class talent and is probably the joint best striker in the premiership. Van Nistelrooy was an insane goalscorer, one of the best poachers of all time and thus beats Rooney on this account solely but Wayne Rooney's overall game probably trumps this as he's a much better link up player, is a better passer, higher work rate and numerous more assists.

United definitely miss a player of his style though, Hernandez has had a dip in form and Welbeck for all his quality isn't a natural finisher, someone like Huntelaar would fit, although Dortmund's Lewandowski is being bandied about by a lot of journalists as well.

I agree it's sad that players like Scholes and Giggs are retiring too, it's definitely an end of an era when they hang up their boots, especially Giggs after playing in every premiership season.

I have no idea why but I really want United to sign Lewandowski. I mean I've only really just discovered who he is but in the last season with Borussia Dortmund he's apparently scored between 20-30 goals for the club and wasn't even their first choice of striker. In his last game he scored a hatrick against Bayern Munich and he's still young. The fact that Sir Alex went to see their last match under the pretense he only wanted to see Shinji Kagawa and suddenly we also want one of their strikers seems like a clever clever move because reports are saying Lewandowski's contract talks at Dortmund have failed even though the club are desperate to keep him, but I feel like if he can pull off that kind of skill at Old Trafford he might well be one of the best investments the club has made for a while, so if he does come I hope he doesn't disappoint. Perhaps he'll be added to the list of my new favourite players now Van Nistelrooy is gone :P

Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney are good players, don't get me wrong, but Berbatov is extremely lazy as a striker. He's only really had one good season at Old Trafford as far as I'm concerned and wasn't a particularly good investment. And Rooney does get goals but especially this last season he's been pretty pathetic. A player of his popularity, calibur and skill should have been able to compete with Robin Van Persie of Arsenal and contend for the leagues top scorer, but there have been so many times this season where he has missed some absolute sitters that Van Nistelrooy would have forced into the goal. It's all very well saying that Manchester United's midfield needs improvement but Carrick has had a fantastic season and I strongly disliked Carrick since before this season. Paul Scholes coming back helped and we have some very talented young wingers so yeah, we need to invest in some more competent midfielders that can keep up with Yaya Toure and the like, but having had some of the chances he's had, Rooney has no excuse not to have scored, especially since a chunk of the goals he missed were penalties.

On top of that Rooney only really seems to be interested in money deep down and I feel like there's a chance he'd leave United because of money - it's not exactly the first time that problem has happened since he threatened to do it in 2010/2011. And for that reason I dislike him as a person and a player. Somebody like Javier Hernandez on the other hand is a young boy who seems to LOVE playing for Manchester United. If you see him watching his team mates play and scoring goals, he's the first one to stand up and go crazy for the goal. He's the kind of player I like, and hopefully his form will pick up again next season after his injury threw him off.

I find it unfortunate that Van Nistelrooy even had to leave Manchester United. Apparently it was Cristiano Ronaldo's fault he did in the first place. They got into a fight in training with Van Nistelrooy complaining about the fact he never passed to his team mates (which is about 1,000,000% true) and Ronaldo got all pissy about it probably before Van Nistelrooy told him to go cry to Carlos Queiroz, yet Ferguson saw that as unacceptable and left Ruud out of matches cuz he figured he was disrupting the club. A season later Ruud got sold after not being featured much in games. The two of them then both played for Real Madrid afterwards so we basically lost our best striker for nothing. It really pains me to have found out that was why he went because I'd pick Van Nistelrooy over Ronaldo any day of the week.

Ah I get what you're saying now, I actually admire Rooney's style as a player but he definitely leaves a lot to be desired as a person and I could see him leaving as well. He is also very inconsistent like you said and tends to score goals in bursts and although he has posted up an insanse tally of 27 league goals this season it is tempered with the fact he's United's main goal threat where as Ruud had to content with multiple other players who were known for their goalscoring.

I like Lewandowski a lot too, he's definitely a United style signing opposed to a City one as well as although he's obviously talented he's not a superstar and is only on the cusp of being a great, United tend to take these sort of players (Valencia, Hernandez, Vidic) and turn them into World class performers but with a relatively good price. If he did arrive I have a feeling Rooney would drop deeper into the hole and have Lewandowski as the focal goal scoring threat.

You've summed up Berbatov, I can't think of many players anywhere near his level of technique but he's such an odd player, it looks like he hardly tries and berates his team mates a lot for off passes which is annoying to see. I like Hernandez too for the reasons you've pretty much said, he seems very humble and is definitely grateful for where he is which is something every football fan wants to see.

I do think United have to strengthen their midfield, I agree about Carrick, he comes undone against the very top teams but he's a solid performer and keeps possession well. Kagawa is a very good player but United play a 4-4-2 so unless they're planning on changing their formation I wonder where players like Kagawa/Sneidjer would play if they arrive as they are both useless defensively, Hazard could play on the wing but City are pulling out the stops for him too.

Kagawa would be perfect actually, we desperately need a creative influence in the middle of the park who isn't 37. I've been keeping an eye on him for a couple of years and he's top class. He looks set to leave as well and some reports say we've already wrapped up the deal. So you should all expect him to sign for city now ;)

Actually, it was worse than that. He actually told him to go "cry to your Daddy" which doesn't seem so bad until you remember that Ronaldo's Dad had died less than a year before. It wasn't Ruud's best moment and probably what pushed him out of the door.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I always use him on Ultimate team in Fifa. It is such a sad day for soccer everywhere. I remember when he was on Real Madrid. Him and Raul were always the players I admired growing up.

I call him Mr. Roy!

Yeah but the thing with that was that Van Nistelrooy had meant "Daddy" to mean Queiroz. It's hardly like he had gone out of his way to insult Ronaldo's actual father. It is an insensitive comment but Van Nistelrooy was always known for provoking people, tbh that's something I admired about him. It was part of his flair. Someone like Wayne Rooney or Eric Cantona get that kind of space from Alex Ferguson. He has a soft spot for talent, so if Rooney and Cantona were misbehaving he'd let them get away with more than the likes of the others, so why he wasn't able to just calm the entire issue down and let them both resume playing I do not know. They both played for Real Madrid later and there were no repercussions. At the end of the day it just looked like Ruud was kicked out by Ferguson just because he was older than Ronaldo, when actually Van Nistelrooy was right about Ronaldo all along.

And I agree with your summary there Light. Feels good to know someone understands my view haha. The problem I have with the Eden Hazard story is that he's inflating the attention around which Manchester club he'll sign for. I mean it's pretty obvious which one he's gonna pick. He's 21 years old, City have tons of cash, and they just pipped United for the title. They also have Vincent Kompany who is the Belgian national team captain, so there's at least one player that can persuade him that City is better (when they blatantly aren't |: ). It'd only be a surprise if after all this hype, he decides to go to United.

As for the Kagawa thing, he is what United need. United haven't had a player that can move the ball forward enough, they've tended to just stop short of the penalty area and had trouble getting the ball in. I don't think it's a question of United fitting around Kagawa, it'll be a question of Kagawa adapting his play to suit the position he gets played in. To be honest I see this working well if United snatch up Kagawa and Lewandowski since they know each other and their style of play. I'm hoping United pick up 3-4 players this summer and those two are half of the quota. I'd say then they needed a defensive midfielder and/or a couple of defenders.

I just don't see many strikers being like the ones I grew up watching now and days. I have players that I like today, but not ones that I can say for certain that I admire. It's something about van that I will miss.

Here is a video I found for his tribute.
