I suppose this is dependent on whether or not you believe in 1-D, 2-D, 3-D, and so on. In all honesty, I could definitely consider the possibly that we (all objects), or a subset of us, interact with on another on dimensions higher than the third (spatial); we (humans) just are not yet adept an view it as such. Let's consider our senses; it seems as if we (those with "sight") can only view the physical world in two dimensions (planar); things that proceed to get farther away from us, actually only seem to become physically smaller. The only ways of us knowing that such an object is actually moving away from us are these:
That type-stuff... So if we can only see in two dimensions and fell in three; what exactly are we doing to things, and each other, in four/five/six dimensions? Can you all stop trolling me in the eighth dimension; it gets old fast... Perhaps thoughts/concepts, or, better yet, emotions, are physical and are merely in some dimension in which we have trouble observing in any other way aside from thinking, or emoting. Just opening up philosophical-esque convo. Edited by Kruegs Outlandish, Apr 10 2012, 12:30 PM.

Several models of the universe in modern physics give it multiple dimensions beyond the standard 4. IIRC, 11 and 20 seem to be the most popular numbers. I disagree that emotions and thoughts need to incorporate other dimensions to make sense; they are more likely to be products of processes taking place inside standard physical dimensions; it is the nature of these processes that is the problem. But then again, what really is consciousness? Edited by InterWebZ, Apr 10 2012, 01:46 PM.

I think that's a problem worth considering. We can't really prove whether the people that we talk to on the internet or even face-to-face are thinking being. Imagine having built a population of robots that can perfectly mimic human tendency and then place one average human in that population; that guy would never know that the people whom he dates, plays ball with, and talks to casually are actually (or allegedly) not capable of the type of consciousness and thought that he is. I'm not stating that we have to think or emote in other dimensions, however; only that we probably interact in ways that we would never realized possible, and that those interaction may or may not affect that which we deem observable. |

Non-spatially, the fourth dimension could be recognized as time, thereby meaning we live in the fourth dimension, as we are going into the future at the rate of 1 second per second.
Speaking spatially (disregarding non spatial dimensions, such as time for 4th, or all possible universes for some other dimension of string theory I think), for us to interact with fourth dimensional 'beings' (the word being used as any sort of object, not necessarily a living being), they would be present to us in a three dimensional form, as that would be all we could see. For example, imagine a three dimensional being. When light hits a three dimensional being, a shadow is formed. This shadow has two dimensions: length and height. It has no depth (or width, if you prefer). Were we to go into the second dimension, the only thing other two dimensional beings could see would be our 'shadow'. Of course, our two dimensional 'shadow' would not be an absence of light, but would have some of our features. A two dimensional being would cast a one dimensional shadow, and if a two dimensional being were to go into the first dimension, the one dimensional beings could only see the second dimensional being in the first dimension. So if we are interacting with any fourth dimensional beings or objects, we could only see them in the third dimension. That's what I think pretty much. People don't seem to get that... "I think, therefor I am" How do I know you think? You could just be some strange mass that reacts to what I do. I wonder what dimensions are used in dreams. We view the world. But we also create that world and know where everything is at all times, without realising most of the time. Is life 2D? A series of electrical impulses. 3D and complex but it's output is so different. Maybe if God is real it's not some stereotypical old looking guy with a beard, maybe it's a dimension in it's own and everything we know evolves around, is based on and destroyed by it constantly for however long the fourth dimension makes it seem to lesser states of matter and beings. |

you actually see in 3 dimensions if you have 2 working eyes. each eye sees an object from a slightly different perspective, and your brain triangulates to determine depth. so no, a small object up close does not appear the same as a big object farther off. | ||||||||||||||||||
