Vegeta, Nappa, Frieza etc can't suppress their power levels but when they power up it rises. How does that work? Could somebody please fill me in on what I'm missing |

Suppressing is lowering your level so you're really weak. Their base strength is just what they are at relaxed powering up is basically like getting angry, if you've ever been in a fight and got enraged it's just that but on a far more spectacular level. If they were to be fully powered up all the time they wouldn't live very long. EDIT think of it this way you're sitting still right now and feel at ease, that's your base strength. Tense your muscles and that's you powering up. Supressing isn't really something us weak humans can do but it makes sense that DBZ characters can do it. Edited by Steve, Feb 25 2012, 03:28 PM.

The range of interpretation is huge between members. I'd say that powering up is storing ki and readying it for use; and if a fighter is able to raise power, then they may even raise their power substantially. Otherwise, the battle power (change in energy over time) would stay the same. I'll close by stating that it's not fun getting into a flame wars with someone over it; this is a topic of which you would want to stay clear of trolls. |

I'd think they have a relaxed level to stay at for their normal lives or that they actually are at full power, but somebody who can sense Ki like Goku can only sense their full Ki when they surface it. |

Exactly. They have a relaxed, normal level they maintain, but when they are fighting, they bring out their 'dormant' ki, thereby powering up. When they are done fighting/have wasted too much energy, they relax again so they're not using all their ki. Supressing your power however, is making your ki usage lower than your 'relaxed' ki, or normal/base ki. |
