Am I the only person who really doesn't like this idea? A police station run by a private organisation. Sounds like exactly what happened in Robocop. If you've watched the third film, then you know what that lead to. Allthough the company in Robocop also owned the city as well to be fair. However, I am still very much against the idea. Private companies strive to make a profit. This means cutting corners, firing staff, bringing in younger less experienced workers who can be paid less, ect. I don't think it will benefit this police station in the long term.

Then there's the worry that it could start a trend. As much as I'd love to see a real life Robocop, the consequences of a police force turned into a business could be dire.

doesnt certain sections of san francisco have private police details? not every city has publicly endorsed cops. There was even a christian slater movie made about it called KUFFS. Back in the early 90's.

You can't exactly compare real life to a film though.

On the contrary, lots of things that happen in films end up happening in real life. This is one example among many. Alarm bells will ring if a company buys a struggling city.

I mean, films are written for entertainment, even if it's a fluke assumption of what could happen, they rarely address every single factor that contributed to the scenario. Also, the only reason governments dominate us is because they hold the moral exception of taxation, private companies would collapse into nothing if they tried to dominate people through force, to them the people are customers, not tax live-stock. Imagine an executive proposing such a radical plan during a board-meeting - how they would be mocked. Perhaps if the private company became a new government, but then they're no longer a private company.

you shouldnt make statements about things you dont know about then, just like PEL said, lots of films are based on real life things. Being a private sector cop in frisco is only unknown to those that DONT know.

These are the same guys who are currently responsible for transporting prisoners....and accidentally let some get away.
Worry is that they'll start cutting more corners to save money/make more profit even when the economy picks up.

Privatised police reminds me of a Fry and Laurie sketch, if anyone is intrested, check the spoiler.

Spoiler: click to toggle

But anyway, I don't think a private police force would be in the best intrest of the public because a private firm is going to not be impartial, it is more likly to look out for the intrests of its shareholders and look for a profit.

Wouldn't it make it easier to buy yourself a get out of jail card? Even so that would suck.

The entire voting system relies heavily on bribery. Bribe the people with potential goodies for votes, accept bribes from special interests to further one's own campaign - totally legal there, right? Anything which works in the government's favor often turns into a moral exception. At least private companies cannot break their own terms and conditions without utterly losing credibility.

cutting corners and saving money+ "accidentally" letting some get away? = paying to get off the prison bus.
