Is it ok for black people to use the N word?

In my opinion, if white people aren't allowed to use the N word, then black people or people of any skin colour for that matter shouldn't be allowed either. I have few problems with the word myself. Words are meaningless without context. But to have a word in the English language that only one particular race is allowed to use, is just another form of segregation in my book. So I think for reasons of equality, it should be unnacceptable to casually use this word regardless of your skin colour or ethnic background.

'Political correctness' is a load of garbage in my opinion. Calling someone n*gger is just as rude as referring to someone based on any other obvious physical traits instead of their actual name and/or apparent personality.

I personally don't use/like the use of the word in everyday speech but I understand to some degree why it's used.

A slightly different variation of the word was used by "whites" [1]to put down people of African heritage. The version used today is a word that expressed a bond between Blacks with no negitive connotation.

Uh unfortunately I'm on my iPod and don't feel like typing a lot

Agreed with both of you whole-heartedly. It's rubbish.

The thing I don't understand is why they feel the need to use the word. They complain about anybody else using it because it's automatically derogatory then, but if they use it it's somehow not. Um...what? The logic behind that train of thought is faulty to say the least. If they want others to stop using it, then they should also stop using it, especially in artistic mediums that they promote to others of their race.

Personally, I use the word all the time and don't give a damn. I'm not black or mixed with black either. I don't go around saying it casually to people I don't know (more for avoiding being shot than respect, sue me), but if I'm with friends or by myself (or talking trash on Xbox LIVE), you'd be hard-pressed to not hear me say it at least half a dozen times. It's just a word to me. I call anybody a n*gger, regardless of race. I say it to my black friends even, and they don't give a crap because they know I'm not being serious or trying to put them down by saying it.

And I don't mean "they" in a demeaning manner, honestly. It's just the best way of getting my thoughts out, for me anyway. And see, if it wasn't for "political correctness", I wouldn't even have to put this little disclaimer...

I agree, to segregate a word to one race only is ridiculous. Obviously if it is used in an insulting or deliberately harmful way then yes it is wrong. But the same goes for any word that could offensive. For example you do not see red haired people as the only ones allowed to use the word "ginger" so why is it so for the N word. Now I could start on political correctness but I fear I would still be writing and miss the Olympics. I find it truly bizzare that a word can be owned by a race of people. As an English speaker should I not be entitled to use every word I may find in the dictionary? I sympathise that the word may be used in such disgusting ways, but I ask when someone is stabbed do we blame the knife or the man wielding it?

Excellent post. I agree completely. I simply don't understand how this even happened. I mean, whose idea was it to start calling blacks n*ggers after all of the slavery stuff had ended? Isn't that something they wanted to stop?

I can see why yall are saying what you say, about it just being a word and anyone should be able to use it, but I don't feel like you're thinking from their perspective; specifically, the perspective of black people who were targeted by that word during slavery and even today and are still at a social disadvantage despite the civil rights gains. the word carries a connotation of hate.
Why is it considered bad if white people use it? cause they used to use it to be hateful, mean and derogatory. chances are, you're not using the word to be like that and it wasn't you who enslaved them so why does this rule apply to you?
It comes down to the simple fact that white people are privileged by society, especially in the USA. We automatically get special privilege because of the color of our skin. black people are at an automatic disadvantage because of the color of their skin, even in this day and age. racism still exists and colored people are still very much disadvantaged.

I'm not sure if I articulated everything I was trying to say, but that's why it's not socially acceptable for a white person to use the word that word. black people can use it amongst themselves cause they were the ones the word was originally targeting. white people using it just brings back the same negative connotation that it had before, even if that's not what you meant for it to do. But a lot of white people can't see this because they've never had to face the discrimination that the mass majority of black people go through on a day to day basis.

Nice seruphim, in a nutshell that was.

IMHO, being called a n(gger for anyone should be an insult of the highest degree, nevermind being PC, thats stuff was invented by supposed black leaders who in reality dont have any say over blacks or what they do. Their paid to make people think that.

In truth, most blacks DONT use that word. The ones that do, use it for the reason agent G said, they are also the same individuals who dont let that word take power over them either.

Like KP said, he says it all the time, i hear people running around calling each other nigga everyday.

But what seruphim said is spot on too, alot of whites take that out of context and use it for vitriole.

For me its a just a word that can insult anyone of any race, its just that the blacks took power over it.

The word originally didnt even refer to a certain race and despite the uneducated's popular belief? it wasnt invented for blacks either. it was always meant as an insult though.

The original websters dictionary, states that a n*gger is a childlike being who is ignorant to the world and unable or unwilling to take responsibility for themselves. Thats a cold insult to just throw at someone.

The african slaves brought here, WERE ignorant to the white mans ways, so was everyone else the white man came and planted their flag on.

Alot of true racists call EVERYONE NOT WHITE n*ggers, ive heard it all.

In response to being called one, i have retaliated in the same fashion, i get the same dumb look i always get from someone who says that to me, "how can i be a n*gger? im not black"...LOL, enuff said.

anyways, being PC is more forced on whites by other whites more than anyone else, referring back to KP, alot of blacks dont mind other people saying it at all, long as the context is right.

Pelador: if you feel the need to say the word cuz its cool? youre wrong, it really shouldnt matter WHO says it if they mean it in a truly insulting manner.

It just goes to show how popular culture can turn a hurtful word or meaning into something else.

One hundred years ago, a fag was a cigarette, now its a derogatory reference to a homosexual male. Go figure.

Being gay meant you were kicking it, now it means ur homosexual.

words change, people change. Pretty soon the word nigga will be used by everyone. or no one. depends on if you care or not.

I dont, but dont enjoy being called a n*gger either, as im clearly not.

I say it sometimes, it's just a word, if we are not allowed to say the N word, then black people shouldn't be allowed to say the C word.

@Ninjajp: that's an overall great post but I disagree a little on one point. I agree that the word "LOOK AT ME! I'M BEING RACIST!" can apply to a larger group than just blacks, but I feel that it's been (re)created (depending on when the word was created) to describe a person of African decent. The definition defines exactly what slave owners thought of slaves (subhuman or childlike).

I wouldn't ridicule someone for thinking only blacks can be called nigels especially considering that the definition of words can be subjective or even change over time, like in the examples you gave. (fag and g**).

Edit: apparently I can't have the "Gee Ay Why" word in my post...?

I really think you're showing just how privileged you are in this one sentence. White people were not or ever will be systematically oppressed or denied rights. To us it is 'just a word' because the word has never been directed at us by the majority of society as a derogatory term. white people, especially men, don't know what it's like to be oppressed by society as a whole. this is why it's not 'racist' when blacks create their own shows, dating sites and more.
but to black people this word has a heavy negative connotation associated with slavery and lynchings and more. As I said, a white person using it brings back all of that.

I had this topic and the video open at the same time and thought someone might want to see this comment.

Also about all this privilege stuff Seruphim is talking about. If your confused there is actually a book called Privilege by Michael Kimmel which is a collection of articles that discuss the privileges that all types of people have.
