Anyone else a little worried about the state of the anime industry lately? 2007- Geneon out of business 2009- ADV Films out of business 2011- Tokyopop Shuts Down U.S. Publishing Division 4kids files for bankruptcy 2012: Jan 2- Bandai ceases production of DVD and Blu-Ray releases Will allow licenses to expire. Jan 10- Media Blasters Lays off 60% of staff Feb 3- Media Blasters puts Bakuman and Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians releases on indefinite hold I'm guessing Media Blasters is next. I know companies like Funimation and Viz will be around for a long time but It's nice to have some variety. We don't need a monopoly. |

Great topic. I was about to make a similar topic on another forum actually. The future of anime in AMerica is going to end up on the internet. One or two companies will have rights to everything and it will be harder to find anime on tv (harder than it already is). There are only 2 American anime periodicals and only a select few American based sites that are worth anime lovers visiting. The selection is going to decrease and even if the economy gets better and people want to invest in anime again (like a decade ago) only a few companies will have rights as you said. |

Yeah anime on TV has pretty much died. Just last year Syfy got rid of it's Ani-Monday block and it seems like channels wont air anything unless it's toy based or DBZ. There's the Funimation channel but it's only available for small cable companies. |

Aniplex USA still exists, for which I'm thankful for one reason. Guess what it is. But yeah, it's no longer the anime boom. The gateway that was once there is greatly limited now, and the big moneymakers already made their big money. Can we blame online pirates for this? |

I'd say piracy probably has a lot to do with it. If people can get everything for free, why pay? (not my attitude btw, just what the majority think). Anime industry isn't like the music industry, which can fall back on things like concerts and piracy hurts it a lot more. I wouldn't be surprised if Funimation and Viz were the only two left standing in a few years time. |

They're part of the problem. The other problem would be poor pricing or lack of exposure. |

Piracy is not an issue, the true issue is the legit companies failing to adapt. Naturally consumers want to support things that they enjoy in the hopes of being provided more, but if it is simply more convenient to pirate goods then many people will opt to do so.

Piracy is definantly part of the problem, the sytem is currently set up take things made in the USA and port them to other cultures. The reverse process isn't done so much so its very hard to be profitable. Films made in the UK that are already in English don't even make it into the states often. Piracy really doesn't help. PIRACY ASIDE-- I think the biggest problem is a lack of good anime. Most anime is short (25 episodes or so) and after watching a lot of it in recent times, I'd have to say that Dragonball and Gundam Wing are diamonds in the rough. I wish all Anime were as well developed with more episodes, but not a lot are. And newer anime series (Bleach, Narutro, Full Metal Alchamist) are a little kiddy. I don't really enjoy watching those shows now, but I still enjoy watchng Dragonball even though I'm older. I think the value just isn't there in a lot of anime. Know what I mean?
