In a topic about assj earlier today, I mentioned a portion of my theory about ssj relating to the grade forms (assj, ussj). that got me to thinking along those lines, and i remembered other portions of my theory that i have posted in the last 6 months or so. I've never condensed this theory into one whole, nor have I posted all of it, so here goes nothing. to start off on the ssj theory, I first have to explain my ideas about another subject, dormant ability. Dormant ability, also known as potential, or hidden power, is a real phenomenon that has been exaggerated to extreme proportion in the typical over the top fashion of dragonball. real dormant ability (not the actual term, which i don't know) is the portion of your physical strength that your subconscious mind does not allow you to use, so that you don't accidentally injure yourself through overexertion. In certain stressful situations, your body releases adrenaline, among other hormones, to bypass that subconscious block, allowing you to use your full strength when necessary. dragonball dormant ability is similar in nature, but is taken to an entire different degree. while in real life, you are capable of using about 80% (iirc) of your full strength under ordinary conditions, in dragonball you run into things like earthlings and saiyan-earthling hybrids, that use about 1/1000 of their full power. even saiyans only use about 1/40 of their full power. in dragonball, just like in real life, dormant ability can be accessed by bypassing or removing the subconscious blocks through any of a variety of methods. the earliest method introduced was the super holy water, which was a powerful poison that, if you survived it, triggered a change in the way your brain worked, not only allowing you access to your true power, but also enhancing your mental abilities, such as the ability to sense ki. other methods included special training, extreme fear or rage, and magical assistance. the final method introduced was the saiyan transformation into an ssj. saiyans, much like earthlings, used only a small portion of their true power, and had no practical way to access that power under normal circumstances. they had no magical aids, no knowledge of advanced training techniques (since saiyans rarely took enough time away from fighting to do any real training), and didn't express emotions to the degree needed to access their power. saiyans had a hidden alternative to the traditional paths to power though. any saiyan that lived long enough to gain a certain amount of power, roughly 45,000 pl, underwent a mental transformation. they gained a small amount of psychic abilities, such as the ability to read the minds of those they touched, or communicate telepathically with those that also had the ability, their personality changed somewhat, becoming (more) eager to face a challenge, and being generally calmer than their weaker brethren. these few saiyans were a breed apart. they were known as super saiyans. the super saiyans had one other ability that most saiyans did not possess. when placed under a great deal of stress, they triggered a reaction similar to an earthling's adrenaline rush. their body produced hormones that partially bypassed the blocks on their dormant ability, and they went from using 1/40 of their true power to about 1/4. the sharp increase in ki usage had some side effects. since the muscles and nerves weren't accustomed to channeling such large amounts of ki, it spread through the whole body, causing visible outward effects such as the hair spiking up and turning light yellow or white, the eyes glowing green, a visible yellow aura, and a constant wind blowing away from them that caused a swishing noise. after a few times accessing this release of ki, super saiyans can learn to do it at will, without needing a stressful situation. well trained super saiyans could tell that they were still holding back power, even while using the ssj form. against the androids, the super saiyans attempted to access this greater power. vegeta and trunks attempted to force their power higher, accessing what are commonly known as the ssj grade forms, while goku and gohan trained to lessen the strain of the ssj form. it should be noted that the grade forms are not actually "forms" at all, not even to the extent that the ssj form could be called a form. they were actually a variation on a very basic, but little used, technique. I call this technique ki weighting. it was used by master roshi, frieza, vegeta, trunks, and cell to boost their power in combat. goku also discovered it, but decided it was useless because of its significant drawbacks. I mention ki weighting here because it is relevant to dormant ability. ki weighting is possible because of the blocks in place that cause dormant ability. it is used by forcing ki into the muscles and nerves faster than they can release it through the blocks, causing them to physically expand, and temporarily increase power and strength. this is why no one who mastered the ssj form used ki weighting, even when it would be beneficial. they had grown accustomed to ssj, and raised the tolerance of their muscles and nerves to comfortably channel nearly all of the ssj power, and so could no longer force ki in at the rate necessary to cause an inflation. on to mssj, and the higher ssj forms. mssj is what happens when a super saiyan spends significant amounts of time in the ssj form. the body gradually adapts in various ways. the brain becomes more sensitive to the ssj triggering hormones, allowing less to be used to gain the same effect, and the nerves and muscles adapt to the higher ki flow, allowing less to be wasted through the rest of the body. another effect is that the super saiyan gains the ability to suppress their ki flow while maintaining the form, so they use only as much ki as the situation demands, while being able to quickly and easily use more if needed. when placed in a stressful situation of a similar degree as the one that initially triggered ssj, the body can accidentally produce the full amount of ssj hormones, triggering an advanced form called ssj2. the super saiyan doubles their effective power, while the ki increase causes the hair to spike more, and bio-electricity to manifest in their aura. a side effect of this form is extreme aggressiveness from the high hormone levels. once a super saiyan gains access to and control of ssj2, they can begin to attempt to consciously push the hormone production of their bodies past the level it would normally go to. this causes the final, and most dramatic, transformation of all. the super saiyan doubles their effective power once again, now accessing their full true power. the ki usage at this point is so high that visible physical changes occur. the flesh of the forehead is pushed forward, covering the eyebrows completely, while ki solidifies around the hair causing the appearance of drastic hair growth. this form, being an artificial form beyond the body's normal capacity, quickly drains the body's resources, allowing only a few minutes of use. dead bodies, not needing the same level of care as living bodies, can maintain the form significantly longer. and, that's about all I've got, unless I've forgotten something. tell me what you think. |

I don't know about this. Apparantely Toriyama and his bud made Supersaiyan on the spot just like many other things he did. They wanted a change on the outside to represent great strength. Apparently they "hit two birds with one stone" with the Blonde spiked hair lolz. Interesting read though.

That's a good theory, but I believe hidden power is not your full potential, but a part/portion of your potential.
He specifically references "hidden power". He is drawing out their hidden power, the power they already have but can't use, not the power they could gain in the future through training, that's what I call full definition based potential. Edited by Blade007, Feb 1 2012, 04:35 AM.

I know what potential by definition is. when I used the word potential, I was using it the same way as it is used in dragonball, which is synonymous with hidden power and dormant ability. as far as i can tell, no one in dragonball has any potential by definition, because there is no hard limit to how powerful anyone can get if given enough time and motivation. |
