In the manga it's easy to see the difference even in Vegeta's case.
Never read the manga so I wouldnt know that. :P

But in the anime it can be a killer trying to make out what transformation he is using. Lol
Yeah, I know that pain. Sometimes I wish Vegeta would've kept the bangs he had as a child (at least in filler), but then he'd probably look too much like Son Goku. :(

I guess the easiest way is to just assume he's at his strongest form unless otherwise stated. Or if Son is only in Super Saiyan, then so should Vegeta be.
