Why GT Could Have Been Great (but wasn't)

The fights were far less entertaining to me. There were only a handful of good fights. Vegeta vs. Baby Gohan, Goku vs. Ledgic, SSjin 4 Goku vs. Eis, Uub vs. Baby Vegeta, and I suppose SSjin 4 Goku vs. Baby Vegeta, Nova, etc, were alright. But the fights just didn't compare to fights from DBZ like Goku and Piccolo vs. Raditz, Goku vs. Vegeta, Vegeta vs. Zarbon, Goku vs. Freeza, Vegeta vs. 19, Piccolo vs. 17, etc.

Beyond that, I thought the loss of screen-time for Gohan, Goten, Piccolo, and Uub was an atrocious mistake. I don't really like Pan or Trunks too much, but they shouldn't have been at the fore-front of the cast as they were. Goten and Uub should've had some major development. While Uub did grow and change, he was phased out after the Baby Saga. And even during his "hero time" he failed at a role that Goku spent a good five years preparing him for. Although, some argue Goku wasn't really trying to train Uub but himself. Still, Uub was a waste of a character in many respects.

Goten and Trunks' potentials were also wasted. While Trunks was at the head of the cast for a good while they failed to develop his power, or saw fit not to. I believe Goten had it worse than Trunks. Not only did Goten not become stronger, but he hardly had any important screen-time at all. Goten and Trunks are two characters that were never fully developed, or rather, never assumed the roles they were meant for.

Gohan should've taken Goku's place after the Cell Game. It is really quite retarded to see Goku, made a kid again, continuing as the main hero. By GT Goku and Vegeta should be surpassed by Gohan as a result of what should've happened after the Cell Game. But Goku remained the main hero throughout the Buu Saga and GT.

It would've been nice to see Piccolo make a come-back in power in GT, because Piccolo is pure win. I think GT would've gotten a bigger following if Piccolo played a more central role. Even Tien making a comeback in power would've been sick. I just think that Goku and Vegeta probably should've died, or been surpassed by Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Uub. It just seemed fitting for the next generation at that time take the lead. Isn't that why Goku didn't kill Fat Buu?

Overall I just think the makers of GT lacked the imagination to create a good next series. They tried, but failed to develop characters that were being groomed at the end of Z, like Goten, Trunks, and Uub. Even Pan was a disappointment.

The villains themselves... I have a mixed opinion about them. For starters, many of the early villains were pretty stupid, with the exception of Rilldo and Ledgic. The Luud Robot, Cardinal Mutchy Mutchy, the Para Para Brothers, and the Sigma Force were all pretty lame. Baby was probably one of the only interesting villains. Super 17 was a pretty lame idea. The Shadow Dragons were a good idea, but half of them looked lame. Eis, Nova, and Syn looked good, but their fights were mediocre at best. Actually, it was pretty epic when Goku killed Eis. But back to the point: there were only a handful of decent villains. And none of those compared to Freeza and Cell.

GT could never compare to the awesomeness that is Z. It was botched on too many things.

But Android 17 returning as a villain is just plain stupid. It's just like Majin Piccolo. The base saiyans would laugh and take him out with a single punch.
Did that happen in GT? Not exactly. When I said, "Android 17 returns as a villain," it was implied that he returns as a stronger villain who could put up a match against the saiyans, which is what happened in GT. I agree with the rest of your post though.
Android 17 putting up a match against the saiyans from the Cell Games onwards is overly stupid. GT is retarded.

Android 17 being a villain again is also stupid.

He gave his energy to Goku's super spirit bomb, and made two guys give their energy to the spirit bomb, and all of a sudden he's a villain! WTH!? What about the Buu saga? When will the retardedness end?

Android 17 should have stayed a good guy!! super 17 is crap!!

I would rather watch this:

than that stupidly retarded super 17 saga!!

1. GT shouldn't have tried to be Dragon Ball all over again, the Dragon Ball series got darker and edgier over it's run so to go back to the lighthearted days of Dragon Ball just distorts the continuity, and not only that, they did a piss-poor job at it. They did get the picture by the Super 17 Saga (that's when GT started being watchable).

2. The fighting should have been more advanced. The fight "choreography" in GT was way too simple, there was no tactics, skills or anything involved to make them thrilling to watch, it was just Ki blast after Ki blast. >_<

3. They should have someone who knows how the universe of Dragon Ball works to write the events in for GT, GT was full of plot holes, plot contrivance, and leaps in logic, like how Goku was able to turn SSJ4 just by looking at the Earth, that made no sense since the Earth doesn't share the same effect as the Moon when you look at it in Dragon Ball.

4. They should have used the same animation team from DBZ, the character designs from GT were horrendous, and the animation didn't do it much justice either.

..And the fifth one I'm about to bring up is the most needed improvement to make.

5. They shouldn't have focused so much on Goku. In the previous shows, everyone got their piece of the cake whereas in GT, anyone who wasn't Goku was left in the dust with nothing to prove. The characterization was almost nonexistent since there was no direction to take Goku anymore, he already developed to his fullest in Z like with how he learned about his Sayian heritage and chooses to run with it. GT should have focused on new characters like Pan and Uub instead, also not to mention Pan should have been more likable (she was an unlikable *****).

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I didn't mind Super Saiyan 4 I don't see why people hated it.

What they did with it was crap though, instantly gets this awesome incredible transformation! Few episodes later it's completely useless...

What the crap is up with how strong everything is? Majin Buu was the most powerful thing in the universe and was going to destroy it.
But somehow there are things all over the universe that can match him, why didn't they come to fight him in Z?
Because they make no sense!

SSJ4 should have been harder to attain and more amazing when attained.
There should have been a moment where it overpowered Super 17's absorbtion, to get across how powerful it is.

And it totally downgrades Vegeta.
Only GOKU HAS POWER! Until the end...to try make up fo it.

How dare the make a laughing stock out of Vegeta, one of the most popular characters.

Last but not least.

Universal Spirit Bomb.
Why did they have to use that? Spirit bomb AGAIN

Why couldn't Gogeta get the win? Finally Goku and Vegeta totally co-operate and make the greatest warrior the universe has ever seen. But no he's a ridiculous idiot.

Fusion!
Piccolo, he fails...
Piccolo again, he fails...
Gotenks....he fails too
Vegito, the incredible perfect warrior with no weakness, wait...he failed too? WHAT THE HELL.

Oh and Gogeta, he fails too.
Fusion on many occaisions the greatest thing to ever happen to the Z Warriors.
But it never works out for some reason.

And spirit bomb again, how original...

Guys, when I was a kid, I didn't care about all that crap, I enjoyed it because it was Dragonball. Last week I rewatched all of GT and it was amazing. So nostalgic.

Space Saga - Ok, it was alright. Nothing too good, nothing too bad.

Baby Saga - Really interested. It involved everyone and Piccolo's sacrifice was so emotional

Super 17 Saga - Normal #17 was being controlled by his hell counterpart/Gero. Fused to create an android, a throwback to DBZ. Android #18 actually did something, which was awesome. Everybody fought the enemies from Hell and Goku encountered Frieza and Cell

Shadow Dragon Saga - Vegeta actually did something. The Dragons were an obvious throwback to DBZ and I love the reference to Grandpa Gohan (Nuova Shenron). Brought in Fusion again, ended it with a Spirit Bomb. Ok ending, could've been better but meh.

The Ending - So emotional, it was epic.

The earth was emitting Bruits waves at that point, so it's not a plothole or anything.

You know, I'm not a fan of GT, but I would be if it was completely different.

I mean, I think the SSJ 4 transformation could have been interesting if they did something else with it, instead of invalidating all the other SSJ transformations.

My idea was this:

Spoiler: click to toggle

Make that ape form a new, more powerful, base form that can handle the SSJ forms better (and get rid of the pink/red-fur, it looked dumb anyway IMO) and then allow them to transform up through the SSJ tree from there. Also, in GT, SSJ 4 seemed like it had no rules whatsoever; how was Goku able to use the transformation at will, with Earth having no moon? These things are never explained, he just stated: "I can go SSJ 4 whenever I want... hahahahaha..."

They missed an ample opportunity to bring back the false moon from DBZ, how cool would it have been to see Vegeta teaching that technique to Goku?

Also, if I was a villain, I'd have cut Goku's SSJ 4 tail off with a Kienzan, and then kicked him in the KID-neys (get it?).

I also thought the art-direction was horrible... the colors and animation were all sub-par to DBZ in almost every way (personally, I think there's a lot of homo-erotic imagery in GT). It's almost like the producers and artists never went through a decent color theory class in their life. XD

If they had better writers, and artists, they could have made GT really epic.

One more thing, I think the fighting styles are completely lost in GT... when I watch DB and Z, Goku and Vegeta, everyone really, has a distinctive, yet subtle, style. The fact that all that's gone in GT makes the fights much less interesting to watch, and takes something away from the characters.

GT had good ideas, and concepts such as SSJ4. But a very poor development.

If EVERY Z Fighter was involved in GT it would have been much better.

Had Gohan not gotten the shaft, along with Goten and Trunks Gt wouldn't have sucked. However, the story was pure craptastic. Gohan became one of the weakest in the series

I think just a better dub would've made for a 90% improved GT. The FUNi dub changed practically every line for some unknown reason, and it leaves us with questions and the hatred you see most fans having.
im with these two, making it 3 now, the japanese dub was wayyyy better, funimation is PAID to make everything cheesy and childlike so that americans will pay more attention to the brainwashing cop shows all 7 major channels push onto the american public so badly.

Not that i dont watch any, but there are just TOO many.

I like the idea of vegeta getting ss3

funi totally changed pans character. trunks too, In general the funi dialogue was crap.

The hax given to super 17 was lost on alot of people.

he started out not being much stronger than before, but everyone fed him his energy, including goku. Giving him such a massive powerup.

Pretty dumb for a fighters that have encountered androids, of which literally about 17 out of 20 of them absorb energy of some sort or have a infinite battery.

Otherwise i would more clearly define gokus death and esurrection to be something more than he was.

Avatar of the DB's? great, brought back by shenron just because he owed him? possibly.

I know gokus life span was extended by elder kai, so that makes sense to see him alive and well in a heroes legacy.

Otherwise as a show it was fine, just needed more character involvement.

PS: hated the black star dragon balls as they shouldnt have existed with the TWO deaths of kami and piccolo. Red shenron shouldnt be there. At all.
