But that's actually happening to our vocabularly. Even the Victorians noticed it. Words lose letters, some words disappear. The cause is not a distain for swearing. It's just a natural evolution of language. I have no quarrel with it. We're not going to lose our language. New words will be added. Some long, some short. But rest assured, langauge evolution is uncontrollable. |

Considering that, then, do you think that curse words will eventually be acceptable, phased out, or simply just maintain there current status. |
Now, there's an idea. | |

If we're looking at things in the extreme long-term, then I'm sure they will change over time. Our language is constantly changing. Just look at it one hundred years ago. The curse words may not be the same in the future, but I bet they'll still be there. |

There will always be words society deems unacceptable. |

It'll definitely be around. Perhaps not in the same form or spelling as today's incarnation, but it will certainly survive to live through another generation. I think a lot of new "bad" words will be born just by combining current ones. |

Words that are bad now might not be considered bad in the future. Like in the fifities you could never get away with saying ***** on television or radio. |

I'm wondering if the "f" word will live through the ages. It seems like it would never be accepted right now, but who knows in the future. |
Now, there's an idea. | |

You know, quite honestly, even as an English major, I curse a whole hell of a lot (well, maybe not THAT much), and I have a robust vocabulary. I curse because I choose to, and it's a very small way in which I express myself. If others have the right to get offended 'cause I yell ***** when I drop a crate of tomatoes on my foot, then I reserve the right when they get offended at my having said such a word. Cursing does not necessarily indicate a person's IQ, I've known some very smart and adept people that made Sailors sound like *******. The stigma is archaic, and barbaric. Language should be free, and expression protected. |

Quite a few intelligent people that I know curse. Overuse can make someone sound unintelligent, you know, ***** this and ***** that, but I think obvious avoidance of using them makes someone seem unnatural/needlessly paranoid. Why not say a word that perfectly describes a situation (other than it would offend someone else)? |

will first of all being a douche is something that is bad way before words existed. once a uupon a time a caveman beat the living *****t out of a another and he got called a ***** cause he kept using he's a$$ to sit on people. if you look in the history books you'll know. why does it have to be bad can't one say something about posistive?? I think if u were u would see hwo sad it is. Honestly it's upper bs to be seeing "scandelous' stuff being said in middle schools when kids can't even *****ING SPELL A NAME RIGHT. I think we should arrest people who use it more than 10 times a year and then we'll all be happy and awesome. |

I feel that using these words towards another person negatively is the only way it is bad. Other than that it comes to me as just another word. The problem has always been that it is misused and in that scenario Screw you is just as bad as ***** you IMO. I strongly dislike the use of any negative word towards a person, Respect is everything. |

Swearing is a really important part of one's life. It would be impossible to imagine going through life without swearing and without enjoying swearing... There used to be mad, silly, prissy people who used to say swearing was a sign of a poor vocabulary -such utter nonsense. The people I know who swear the most tend to have the widest vocabularies and the kind of person who says swearing is a sign of a poor vocabulary usually have a pretty poor vocabulary themselves... The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education or a lack of verbal interest or -is just a f*****g lunatic... I haven't met anybody who's truly shocked at swearing, really, they're only shocked on behalf of other people. Well, you know, that's preposterous... or they say 'it's not necessary'. As if that should stop one doing it! It's not necessary to have coloured socks, it's not necessary for this cushion to be here, but is anyone going to write in and say 'I was shocked to see that cushion there, it really wasn't necessary'? No, things not being necessary is what makes life interesting -the little extras in life. ----Stephen Fry I think that there will allways be words that are deemed as "bad" , but I myself do not see "swearing" as a bad thing. For example, we have all called a friend a so called "swear" word have we not? And for the most part our friends are not offended or insulted. I believe it is all about the context, if you stub your toe then an exclamative shout of f*** then you have reason. What does annoy me is when it is tossed around without reason, if every other word is F or S then no, that is a problem. |

From experience, the worst curse word you can say is **** (slang word for vagina, begins with C). It seems to have a greater effect than the rest, for me personally. Edited by xDanny 117, Mar 30 2012, 07:54 PM.
