This is probably a silly topic, but one thing that kind of bugs me (I don't know why) is when DBZ dub purists rant on and on about how much they love the English dub (and some of them even denounce the Japanese version), and then they go off and use Japanese terms, sometimes without even realizing it. So I've compiled a list of what I think are the top terms dub fans use that are actually from the Japanese version. On a side note, I don't see this type of thing too often on this forum. Usually the dub purists here stick with dub terms and the Japanese fans stick with Japanese terms, but I have seen these frequently on general forums where people don't seem to know what they're talking about, or in real life. Youtube is also a major contributer. Get it right, dubbers! ![]() 1. SSJ (a.k.a. Super Saiya-jin): Almost everyone uses this one. Come on, admit it. 2. Son Goku: Another one that I see often. He is only referred to as "Goku" in the English dub, so why dub purists put that "Son" at the beginning is beyond me. 3. RoSaT (a.k.a. Room of Spirit and Time): This is one that a lot of people don't seem to realize. In the English dub, it is known as the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, so why is this used by dub purists? Ehhhh, who knows. 4. Freeza/Furiza: I put this one low on the list because I can understand why people can get confused on the spelling. I myself switch between using "Frieza" and "Freeza" quite frequently. 5. Kienzan: Believe it or not, I have heard this one coming from a dub fan's mouth. Can someone tell me why? I probably forgot some, but those are the ones that came to mind immediately. Forgive me. ![]() |

I can't believe I'm saying this right now, but I agree whole-heartedly with you. Honestly, I think they just want to look cool by being different, even if it makes them look like a hypocrite. I don't think it's necessarily hypocritical for people that don't denounce the Japanese version to use Japanese terms, though. I had something to add that would further explain, but it slipped my brilliant mind. Oh well. Edited by Pyrus, Jan 18 2012, 06:12 AM.

Kienzan and Son Goku were used in Kai's dub. That's an excuse there ![]() With the rest, I use them so people know what i'm talking about. If you put HTC people will be like "what's that?" It's too confusing, RoSaT is just easier. I spell it Frieza and yeah that's it. It's mostly for consistency, so everyone understand's each other. Edited by Copy_Ninja, Jan 18 2012, 06:19 AM.

Not really, considering most dub purists hate Kai. And "Son Goku" was only used once in Kai, so quickly that you could barely distinguish it, I believe. Thank ya, bizness! I worked so hard. (not for the baby, but for the thread)

I don't use the terms but when I was little I'd buy action figures and some were Japanese imports. They would have SSJ listed before the name of the Super Saiyan. I had the Son Goku action figure too, but I always just called him Goku. There were a few other differences that I can't remember I'm sure. Maybe people pick up the terms when they look at Japanese merchandise of the stuff. |

Isn't Goku called Son Goku in the Viz English-language manga? Pretty sure he was at least once. So that one doesn't really stand. People calling King Piccolo Piccolo Damaio? Unless he was called Piccolo Damaio in the Viz manga. |

IIRC, daimao was always called king piccolo, demon king piccolo, or just piccolo in english. the word daimao was never used. now, I am guilty of mixing terms, but I'm far from a dub purist, so it's no big deal. I use english character names (except for titles, like daimao and kaioshin), but mix technique names (i use kienzan, but i also use special beam cannon and galic gun instead of their japanese names). |

list of canon sources: the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga. list of non canon sources: everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality. for those that blindly follow word of god | |

I use a mixture, but I mostly get them from either the dub or the manga. I used to say Frieza all the time but the manga changed me to say Freeza. SSj just sounds better than SS. I don't really like it when people use the literal translations from their Japanese names either. I don't mean the translated Japanese names, I mean they use the actual Japanese names like "Bejita" which makes no sense to me because the name was translated into English for us for a reason, we're English... We don't use words like "konichiwa" so why use the Japanese words for their names instead of the English ones that were specifically translated for our language? If you're gonna speak Japanese then at least make your entire sentence Japanese and not just certain words >_> and lastly instead of saying "Bejita" say "ベジータ" if you care that much about using their real Japanese names. It irks me when I see "SS". It makes me think of the Schutzstaffel*. Haha. I know they don't mean Schutzstaffel Goku or whoever, but still. It's not that hard to add a little J at the end of it. Spoiler: click to toggle

I feel guilty because I generally use Japanese terms such as SSJ, Son Goku (sometimes) and Piccolo Daimao. |

Son Goku isn't really a Japanese term since it's his name in the English Manga. |
