SOPA stands for, "Stop Online Piracy Act". The goal of this piece of legislation is to stop copyright infringement and piracy altogether through more extreme ways than usual. This bill will allow the US Government to blacklist any website they feel breaks the "SOPA RULES". Here's the kicker though, the bill allows targeted sites that have been blacklisted only 5 days to appeal, the reason behind this is to obviously not give site owners time to fight back against the government. They could essentially lose all their revenue overnight due to this new bill. Sites like AOL, Google, Twitter, Zynga, and Facebook are all AGAINST SOPA. Here is an insert of a letter they sent to the US Congress.
Having all this been said, I think the most important thing in this bill is the responsibility that comes with the site owners. If pirating, etc was going on on your site and you weren't aware of it then I mean, no biggie. But now, it could cost you your business, etc. An example, if dbzf.co.uk was primarily a US based website and we started having weekly episodes of DBZ on here shown here through hosted media players like MegaVideo (that were obviously illegal) and we gave download links etc, then the US government could blacklist our site from America and Rogue/Tim would have 5 days to duke it out with the US Government, and I just say good luck to that. Contact your Congressman today and tell them how you feel about SOPA. SOPA has the great distinction of being the worst piece of internet legislature to EVER make ti through any chamber of congress. |
