Do Ghosts Exist or Not?

I've just kept edging more and more away from the supernatural, now I fully deny the existence of such things, it's all madness. To put it simply... Ghosts, demons, gods, they all cannot be observed, measured and have zero objective impact on reality - this is the definition of non-existence. To claim that ghosts exists is like saying existence is equal to nonexistence.

This is not a matter of personal preference (i.e. 'believe what you want to believe') in the same way we can agree to like different movies, this is a matter of not being bat-sh*it insane. If you're going to make a truth statement about empirical reality against reason and evidence, the burden of proof is on you. No proof? Then it's false. Removing criteria for proof does not result in a stalemate, it only further reinforces the falsehood.

Lol. This post amused me even though I disagree with it. :p

I know they exist because I've experienced it all a dozen times over, so I guess I'm insane.

I don't think you're insane. You're entitled to your own beliefs.

You're entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't mean you're entitled to proclaiming truth of out an assertion which fails to pass all logical criteria, that would be spreading a lie.

True to you in the sense that you believe they exist externally from your own mind? You have no objective evidence to back it up, therefore the belief is inherently false. Of course you can say that you dreamed of a pink elephant last night and I would have no problem with that, it's not the same thing as saying 'I think ghosts exist' or 'I think that which does not exist exists'.

So you'll take my word for it when I say that I had a dream about a pink elephant last night, but you won't take my word for it when I say I saw a ghost yesterday?

Yes, they are very different. One is claiming truth in something only you could possibly know (at this time), there's no way of telling either empirically or logically whether you're lying. The other is claiming a certain truth exists external from your mind which openly defies the established framework of reality. I could say that I visited Jupiter last night, something which is obviously false, but the possibility remains that I was deluded into thinking that it is true (which would be the same as a dream) - a personal experience does not always support an external truth, especially if such an experience contradicts what we already know.

I have no problem with other people not believing, but I always will. There have been thousands of eye witness accounts of such things as ghosts, demon's, exorcisms, etc. Sure, probably 95% of them are fake, but do you really think every single one of them are not true?

My best friends father is, I can't remember the name, but the equivalent to a Priest in the "salvation army". Just to give you an idea of the kind of man he is, he is extremely intelligent, was a successful business man in his younger days, and was an atheist until his 40's or so. He's a man of high moral fibre, and I know he would never lie or fabricate stories. Anyways, he's witnessed a few exorcism's. He said that, from the movie the exorcist, the only thing he hasn't seen is the head twist around. He's seen other things. Quite freaky to be honest.

My best friend, also a guy that would never lie to me, also confessed something quite chilling. He was a councillor at a youth camp, and told me a story about a malevolent presence at the camp. It all started happening after they found some occult things in one of the kids journals. People were knocked around by the presence, clawed, etc. I could hear the terror in his voice, and he's also someone that would never lie to me.

You can choose not to believe me, I'm just some random guy on the internet. But I will always believe in such things. I feel there are things in this world that human beings arent meant to understand, as grand as we think we are.

100% of ghost sightings are fake, it's even less rational than believing in the Loch Ness monster or Big Foot because at least the biological existence of such entities are technically possible. Ghosts are consciousness/memory without matter, all neurological science says consciousness is a function of the brain just like breathing is a function of the lunges, there is nothing mystical about the brain, sorry to say. What is a ghost even made of? An idea cannot have 'energy', how is possible to ascribe an undefined 'energy X' to a consciousness or memory? The soul as an external entity is entirely fictional. The 'soul' unifies body and mind, it could be what mysteriously defines the boundaries of an individual, but it cannot persist in the absence of a body.

The entire notion of something being undead is a fallacy in itself, 'dead but alive'. All life requires certain biological necessities in order to be sustained, yet ghosts are claimed to be a sub-set of life which ignores such necessities (defying the very definition of life). Ghosts sightings are wishful thinking, nothing more. The human mind has a nasty habit of perceiving what it wants to perceive which leads to many false interpretations of the physical world - trust me, I've been there, believed some pretty whacked out sh*t during high-school.

Thats all fine and dandy. But like I said, I think there are some things out there human beings will never understand. Just watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0lxbzgwW7I

^ Now, I'm sure you've seen videos like this before. I just wanted to point out how small we truly are, even when we think we know everything. We can theorize about everything, but what do we truly know? Science changes all the time. Through new evidence, things we thought were true for decades change over night. We know very little, and some people find it hard to accept that. (not saying you are one of them btw).
