The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on the Franco-Swiss border has made its first clear observation of a new particle since opening in 2009.

It is called Chi_b (3P) and will help scientists understand better the forces that hold matter together.

The as-yet unpublished discovery is reported on the Arxiv pre-print server.

The LHC is exploring some of the fundamental questions in "big physics" by colliding proton particles together in a huge underground facility.

Detail in the sub-atomic wreckage from these impacts is expected to yield new information about the way the Universe is constructed.

The Chi_b (3P) is a more excited state of Chi particles already seen in previous collision experiments, explained Prof Roger Jones, who works on the Atlas detector at the LHC.

What's your opinion on this? I think, if true and tested, it would be an amazing discovery. Although, I must bring into question why it was discovered so soon. If you look around the world right now, no country is in a perfectly stable state. Economies are failing, coups are threatened etc. What I want to know is why does technological advancement take precedence over everything?

This particle would help us find out a lot of things about the creation of everything and many other things, but I fail to see the benefits of this to normal people. I know we can't take into account every single person's wishes, but wouldn't it be better to solidify economies and increase prosperity and such before we pursue such technological information and experiments?

It's what these seemingly meaningless little discoveries can lead too that matter. For instance a greater understanding of particle physics could lead to much more effiecient space travel. Which in turn means humans will have access to a pretty much infinite supply of minerals. Which is what a lot of wars are faught for. It would also drive prices down of course. Again reducing the need for wars since they are also started for economic reasons.

Back on Earth, particle physics has lead to innovations like the MRI scanner. Saving millions of lives. Computers can be made much faster too. This of course leads to even greater levels of technological advancements. So I'd say that any understanding we have of the previously unknown is pretty damn important.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Yeah both your points are valid, all comes down to what the individual thinks really.

But I think right now we should focus on our global economy more than anything else there'll be no more helpful discoveries if we're all dead or starving.
I think right now we have all that we need to be stable but we just need to work on that and not much if anything else. When we're in desperate need of advancement, we'll make it happen but right now we're in desperate need of an efficient global economy.

I'm hating how weapon advancements are still "important" we don't need any more damn missles most countries have enough nukes to wipe out the worlds population several times over.
It's just disgusting how greedy our leaders are over power it shouldn't matter more than people in need of basic human rights.

I think if we keep trying to invent stuff, and not try to help our economy or any other way of life, then eventually we'll be a cyberpunk dystopia...and I would hate that.

I think your topic title is misleading. It should say Scientific Advancements. Technological Advancements would specify advancement in the field of Technology, aka logic devices. The LHC has little to do with something that will enhance your life directly by using Technology.

Just wanted to point that out. Because I was about to write a couple of paragraphs on how Technology is far from stopping advancement. And I was going to prove it.

I was thinking the exact same thing, then I read the article and had no idea what to reply with.
