I don't know if terms such as "best" describe them, but morally speaking Abraham Lincoln made a lot of tough decisions which were very controversial at the time that eventually led to equality within races and is usually "known to be" a great president. I will say this, I believe that the last president we had who truly cared more about the progress of our country and it's growth in all aspects above their personal popularity and approval ratings would be Ronald Reagan. |

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, JFK. Those are the ones that come to mind. |

Yeah I agree. Ronald Reagean was one of the best men that this country has to offer. Nice to see that you agree. Didn't expected from you though, but whatever. Nixon was also a great president. Imo he was better than kennedy. Kennedy is one of the most overrated people in history, hell he even stole a guys speach. Ask not what your country can do for you ask what can you do for your country. That was another guys speach. |

I'd agree with that. Lyndon Johnson actually put through a lot more social welfare legislation than Roosevelt did. But he was a horrible man, a bully in fact. Plus if I recall he was the most involved with Vietnam. More money, more troops, ect. So that's why he's not as good as Roosevelt. I really liked Eisenhower too. He was pretty good. Most bad ***** has to be Teddy Roosevelt though. You can't really beat his sheer manlyness. |

I would say they were in the top 5. I forgot about FDR the line that inspired America, "the only thing we Americans have to fear is fear itself" an astoundingly great man and President at that. |

Nixon? Great? Am I missing out on something? He lied to the whole country, and that just about negates everything good the man had ever done. Forgot the Roosevelts! Darn. |

If you set aside the fact that Nixon was a liar and look at his achievements, then yes he was a pretty good president. I recall reading about him and thinking that if he hadn't be so paranoid about people being against him then maybe he would be remembered entirely diffrently. He wasn't a bad man. Far from it. He was just a little insane. lol. |

I have to agree with ObsessiveFanGirl. He broke the law, lied, resigned, and the only reason he didn't go to prison is because he got a presidential pardon by Ford, had it been anyone else he would of served federal time with his administration.

Washington owned slaves because it was considered normal back then. You weren't bad for having a few slaves. Also, how did Truman directly kill millions? I agree with you about the Clinton scandal, though. I don't think he was a good president because, like I said with Nixon, he lied to the whole country, and that negates everything good he had ever done as president. If he and Nixon had been truthful and admitted to their mistakes, they probably wouldn't have such bad names. |

They were all basically the same. All for "free market" capitalism, and exporting free market capitalism to other countries whether or not the people there want it. FDR was the only 1 who domestically improved welfare, although his foreign policy was still about exporting US companies abroad. I would say the worst in the last 50 years was Ronald Reagan. He was an actor though, so pretty good at spinning stuff. He claimed that nationalised healthcare would lead to the state controlling every aspect of your life, and claimed taxing the rich less would lead to the everybody becoming rich because the rich would voluntarily spread their wealth.... Abroad supported the apartheid financially-increased support when the South African police violently cracked down on protesting native Africans. Supported Sadam Hussein in an attempt to get US oil corporations back into the Iranian oil fields (Iran nationalised their oil industry in 1979), even giving him illegal weaponry(but I guess it's ok if the US does it....). Supported the Contras in Nicaragua, attempting to undermine Nicaragua's attempt at democracy(with elections) just because they wanted a leader who didn't comply with everything the US government/corporations wanted. Funded the anti-soviet forces in Afghanistan which evolved into the Taliban. Anything to stop socialism/imo real democracy. I also don't rate Nixon. He was caught on tape making racist comments. His foreign policy was just as bad as anyone else. Btw Nixon wasn't the only 1 to use the CIA to tape people. Kennedy did it also. If I have to choose a best I would probably go with FDR. Reagan won the Cold War and also revived the American economy. I say he was pretty damn good. He also cut federal spending which seems impossible for presidents as of late.
