Dragonball Z Kai - "True to the Manga"

I recently bought parts 3 & 4 of DBZ Kai(probably one of the most satisfying purchases I've ever made) and of course it claims to be true to the manga, but I can't help to wonder... just how true to the manga is it?

I was pretty naive to how different the original Funi Dub was from the original until I watched some of it with both the English audio playing and Japanese subtitles on, and I was really upset at all of the differences there were. Also, I have never gotten the chance to read any of the Dragonball manga, so I was pretty deprived of enjoying Dragonball Z in its purest form until I bought these DVDs. But like I said, I can't help to wonder just how true to the manga is Kai?
"Meaningless, huh?! What do you know of meaningless?! Spend most of your life ruled by another, watch your race dwindle to a handful, and then tell me what has more meaning that your own strength. I have in me the blood of a Saiyan prince; he is nothing but a joke, yet I've had to watch him surpass me in strength, my destiny thrown to the wayside. He... he's even saved my life as if I were a helpless child. He has stolen my honor, and his debts... must be paid!"

It's not totally true to the manga, I saw Cell do Tien's "12 Eyes" technique against Goku in DBZ Kai and he didn't do that in the manga.

Yeah I wouldn't watch Kai with the mindset of thinking everything in it is canon. I remember seeing someone say that Gregory was canon cos he was in Kai >_>

The meaning of Kai has been distorted along the way. The original saying was "much of the material not in the manga has been cut."

It never said it would be EXACTLY like the manga. If you ask me they were just finding a way to have less footage to update, re-dub and re-release.

In the case of the Japanese version, it wasn't a stretch in terms of dialogue. There was quite some filler that remained and some of the inconsistencies that came with it. BUT, A LOT of Dragon Ball Z mistakes were removed.

In the case of the English version, IT WAS A HUGE STRETCH!!! The original English dubs were not very faithful to the Japanese version, so they created a vast number of their own inconsistencies and non-canon stuff. If you notice in the Japanese version, it's very clear that the filler sequences were extra things because they are NEVER mentioned after they occur (ex: Garlic Jr., driving episode, etc). This made it rather easy for them to cut the large segments of filler without having to make completely new dialogue. The English dub made tons of references to filler considering their unfaithfulness. One example is when Kuririn mentions his girlfriend during the Garlic Jr. arc in depression as he stands in the water on the island of the Kame House, something that is not canon. In the Japanese version, Kuririn says how he will never be stronger than Goku, something that can be kept without changing dialogue. FUNimation had to COMPLETELY redo the dialogue if they were to remove filler.

So in the case of the Japanese and English versions, both were true to the manga. Not completely, but definitely truer. But it would be fair to say in the case of who put in more effort (in terms of dialogue) in staying truer to the manga, I got to go with the English version. The English version came from a long way and have changed for the better. They even had a few manga phrases that even both Japanese version hadn't added. One example of this is when Artificial Humans 17 and 18 attempt to get 16 to talk after they wake him up. In both the manga and the English dub of Kai, after 18 says "What's the matter, cat got your tongue," 17 says, "Or are you, the strong silent type." 17's line was the manga line.

I've compared many parts of Kai directly to the manga (using the best translations straight from the Japanese) and I'd say that 95% of the English dub seems to be faithful to the manga. It's 1000x closer than Z was, for certain.

The above post does a great job of going into detail about why Kai is more faithful.

There are still filler in Dragonball Z Kai, which wasn't presented in the manga. It would be 90%-%95% true to the Japanese manga I presume.

Definitely. It's not an EXACT media adaptation of the manga, but the removal of filler makes it a lot closer than its predecessors.
