America's Future; Are kids these days too careless?

Do you think todays kids don't pay enough attention to what's going on in the world? I'm bringing this up because of what happened last week in my entrepreneurship class. He asked us if we knew what was going on in Egypt and no one answered. It kind of pisses me off how a lot of people don't pay attention to current events. Isn't that why a lot of people make fun of Americans?

Actually, most kids are like that and have been for generations. With education, teens develop more interest and insight into politics. It's a proven fact that people with only a high school education are very unlikely to vote and participate in other political activities, whereas college graduates are usually more involved... because they are more educated.

There is a reason each state focuses on state history and the nation's history first.

While it's important to understand what's going on in the world, it's not an absolute must to understand what's going on everywhere.

You have (in general) 3 types of people. You have people that only care about what directly affects them. You have people that care about what's going on everywhere. Lastly, you have the people that understand about nothing in this example.

I fit into the cateory that usually understands what directly affects me, and the reason is that most people don't really understand what's going on outside thier house even if they think they do. I've seen countless times on this forum and and in the IRC that someone will go on and on about American History & current events that aren't from here, and while they think they know what they're talking about, in reality their knowledge is about equal to what a 10 year old in America understands.

I know this because I tend to do the same thing. An example is: I know how the earthquake in Japan affected their economy and the reduction in tourism that happened due to it. However, I'm also not naive enough to think my knowledge is on the same level as Japanese people.

To directly answer your question, it's important but right now people in America need to understand what's going on here, not in Egypt. The Occupy protests probably consist of about 10-15% of people that truly understand politics and know what they're asking for, yet people want us to worry about what's going on 4k miles away..

I agree with what Cal said. Let kids and teens worry about what's going on in America first. It is what is affecting them now, and it's what will be affecting them years from now. With a few more years and education, they'll learn to look outside their bubble. Don't worry about it too much right now, Ani.

Wow... That is bad.

But you've got to remember that not everyone is going to be politically and historically informed. Not everyone is intelligent, after all. :D

I think we might be forgetting that the public education system is an utter sham loaded with garbage.

Even though it can be stated that when compared to other countries we're lazy, will let anyone teach, etc... I feel that it's essential to compare our education "level/success" with previous decades.

30-40 years ago reading the bible was considered assignments. 60-80 years ago many Americans quit school after the 8th grade ot enter the work force.

Obviously when compared to other countries we're subpar but at least progress is progress.

Why do we have to worry about other countries when we can barley understand our own! we stop putting our worries in other countries and learn more about our own country we would be better of. Them people from other countries don't really know about us so we should do the same. It would be better if we learn everything about our own first then maybe worry just a bit about the outside.

We should learn more about other countries, that way we know when the press/politicians tell us lies about them.

The only isolationist view I agree with is not selling weapons to foreign countries or sending forces over. I do think we need some sort of proper global police service though. Who's job involves removing tyrants from power and assisting in new, better governments being formed. America does need to keep it's nose out in terms of it's military. However, that doesn't mean it should close it's borders and all communication with the rest of the world. That never helps anyone.

When I was at school I never paid attention what goes on in the world and the reason why I didn't see 9/11 attacks on the news. I wasn't interested in politics either, I was an outdoor kinda person with friends.

I don't blame kids for ignoring events taking action in the world and get on with their studies and etc, for the future.
